You mean portmanteaux :P just kidding, I think both spellings work. But I agree! Portmanteaux are super cool! The ones I can think of off the top of my head right now are liger and tigon...what else hmm...

What about the rhyme of the ancient mariner? It was the killing of a albertross that cursed them.

Oh sorry, I'm not sure if that is called a portmanteau. I was referring to what you said about albertross, and I thought it was funny because Albert Ross is a name, but there is also a bird called an albatross.

why, Mr Pisces. as an avid prescriber of Through the Looking Glass, I'da thought if anyone would know what a portmanteau was, it would be you. granted the word's original meaning is a suitcase which opens in two identical halves, but Carroll re-coined the word, in the book, when Humpty explains to Alice the unusual words used in Jabberwocky
Quote:
"see it's like a portmanteau, there are two meanings packed up into one word"
eg; 'mimsy' is swapped out for miserable and flimsy, and 'slithy' for slimy and lithe. not to be confused of course with contractions or compound words, the portmanteau simply merges two words together to make a prettier picture. and that, bouys and gills, is what moobs and cheeseburgers are made of

exactamundo. and you'd be surprised at how many normal everyday words are portmanteaus (or portmanteaux, as its plural may also be spelt), from camcorder, chortle and neither, to the less ordinary cosplay, fandom and jazzercise. just don't go spouting on about the to a Frenchman, as its modern connotation in its native tongue is a place to hang up your coat
