I get why people are upset about the lack of diversity in the nominations, but to tell the truth, I can't think of many great movies in the last year that represented that diversity enough to warrant being nominated. all the major blockbusters were pretty mainstream stuff, and even the few movies where characters were either changed or added to be of an ethnic minority downplayed the fact so much that it almost became obscure. that's the problem when trying to balance political correctness with common sense, the scale always tips one way or the other. its the old 'some of the people all the time' crapola all over again
I agree with you Menelaus to an extent. It makes sense that the nominees are not going to include that many women and people of color if there were not that many great movies representing that diversity, but isn't that the problem in the first place? That women and people of color are not given leadership roles in these films?
that right there is exactly what the problem is. the world of moviedom has got sooo relaxed because of it previous years of including minorities to appease the masses, that they thought nobody would notice that they've returned to the practice of making them supporting actors and gone back to the business of just making money
on a lighter note, Michael B Jordan was surprisingly good as the Human Torch in last year's Fantastic Four movie, especially considering that the character is traditionally blonde with blue eyes, but unfortunately, the movie wasn't nearly half as good as advertised. lesson of the day: don't believe the hype, people
My only question for that movie is,
If Human Torch and Invisible Woman are related, how did they get away with making the Human Torch black and Invisible Woman white? Were they related by marriage? Adoption? Or was it more like an alternate universe?
they went with the adoption option. Susan was adopted by Johnny's father, Professor Franklin Storm, who headed the project that gave them their powers
it was a bit of a cop out, but it did smooth the racial-transition nicely, and without making a big deal out of it too so it didn't really impact on the storyline much
Ohhh, I see.
That's what I figured they'd do, but for some reason I was expecting maybe a mixed marriage or something.
But I am glad that they did adoption. Adoption is so beautiful but so underrated.
Well I am glad that they figured some way to fit both of them into the storyline that way. Adoption is great and happens a lot, but I guess maybe not every movie can have a storyline in which one of the protagonists were adopted? I don't know. I am just thinking back again to that oscars nail tutorial video that I had posted, that was a commentary on how most of the oscar nominees were white and male. That sort of thing.
funny that should be mentioned today. earlier I bumped into an old friend (figuratively, not literally) and his partner, who adopted a pair of twin boys a few years ago. they looked so much happier than birth parents usually do
I liked the nail polish parody, but just thought it was a very opinionated for something so controversial. I think I'll wait for the self-damning rebuttals from the Hollywoodland bigwigs before I pass judgement
I don't know if there will be any rebuttals along the lines of a nail polish tutorial, haha, but I agree with you. But that is just one perspective that is shared by many people of color regarding this topic. And I think she sort of incorporated all of that in a slightly humorous (albeit a little sarcastic) manner into the tutorial
I never get to see movies any more...but, in my opinion, the Oscars should go to the folks with the most talent...no matter what race they might be.
Its kinda sad that the point of the award is obscured by whether or not a person of color was nominated or not.
More women of color need to be cast in the movies so that they have the opportunity to prove themselves, therefore, making them more nominate-able.
But, again, I say that I never get to even see movie trailers, so I don't have any opinion on whether the Oscars went to deserving folks or just to the ones who created the most revenue.
In fact, I have been away from main stream entertainment media for so long, I don't recognise some of the names and faces that were nominated!
(Ignorance is bliss! Lmao!)
I don't know any of the women nominated for the Oscars either, Inzane.
Frankly, I don't really care about the Oscars, to me those awards don't really equal how good of an actor someone is. A lot of amazing actors don't get Oscars. It's more of an elite group of older men who vote anyway, and it's usually a lot to do with numbers rather than talent.
Hey, you guys remember the laughing sun baby from Teletubbies? Here she is! She's all grown up now, but she still looks so adorable and cute like she did as the sun baby!
two hundred and fifty pounds for playing such an iconic role!?! she got ripped off. you'd think they'd give her royalties everytime her image was shown or some other lucrative deal. atleast a college fund or something. its those money grabbing Oscar nominating old men again, sucking the life out of true talent
in an ideal world, the most deserving would win at the Oscars every time, but unfortunately its a bit like watching a show produced by Simon Cowell. the winners are always the ones the bigwigs can best promote and make oodles of money from. there's also a control factor. these people prefer to back the star commodities that they can steer their career in a direction that suits them. everything else is secondary to them, even public opinion
coincidently, Simon Cowell made his money promoting oddities like the Teletubbies true story
you left out Blackenstien and Superfly. I want to say Action Jackson, Hollywood Shuffle, and I'm Gonna Get You Sucka, but they're more 80's 'Naked Gun' style spoofs of 70's blacksploitation
be careful, too much sleep can sometimes be almost as hazardous as lack of sleep
lol, that article pretty much validates the points we made in our previous conversation. the problem of Oscar 'whitewashing' is more in the field of production, than it is in the nomination process
in other news, I found the youtube link to Blackenstien, but I couldn't find one for Bride of Blackenstien. maybe you'd have better luck from your side of the pond
