loool, talk about a close shave...

if I hadn't stopped to watch a solitary magpie as it egregiously proceeded to raid my neighbour's trash to pick clean stale chicken bones with fervent vigour, or better still, if I had left my home no more than two seconds earlier, I would probably have been squished like a breakfast pancake beneath this massive billboard, which 'fell' from the wall above a charity shop I was passing by earlier today. how freakingly lucky is that? or was it fate? lol, I can never decide

That's a tiny billboard! Are all billboards stuck on walls in the UK?
I'm so used to billboards being these massive posters in the sky that stand at least thirty or more feet in the sky on a long, tall post! Or the ones that have three legs with lights so you can see them in the dark on long car rides.

I'm glad you didn't get squished, though. That would have been so unlucky.

lol, we have far stricter advertising laws over here, but not all billboards are bolted to the sides of buildings, some are really tiny and posted on the inside of passenger trains. I'm glad I didn't get squished too, that would have really put a downer on my day

Yeah, no kidding.

I'm glad that you're okay, though it's a shame that didn't happen in America, where being injured woulda meant major $$$ (or £££ for the britz)

lol, we can get mucho dinero for accidents over here too, in fact, there are companies which specialize/prey on such events. but even so, pancake people can't claim anywhere. atleast, not until governments introduce zombie citizenship tests

I need to move to England one of these days.
There's not a lot of advertisement where I live now, but in California there are ads EVERYWHERE! Like, every two seconds you see a billboard for a new movie.

lol, thankies, I'm glad that I'm safe too
here in London, the movie posters are usually covering one whole side of a double decker bus. that way the billboard comes to you

I would love to see a bus with Thor on it coming towards me...
Well... as long as I didn't get hit!

I'm glad you're not a pancake man. I bet you're glad too!
Because being squished would really suck.

lol, I actually saw a tour bus completely covered in the Thor movie ad when the dark world came out, but that billboard didn't try to land on me, it just drove passed then disappeared into the West End traffic

I'm glad you are a bird-watcher!
I would be very sad if you suddenly weren't here to entertain and enlighten us with your wisdom and wit!
Was anybody hurt in that incident?

I'm of the same mind. Though the recent elections have somewhat dampened that impulse.

lol, I know right, who would've thought that the habit of an amateur twitcher could be a life extending hobby? surprisingly, nobody was hurt, and the police were quick to cordon off the area. but it happened at a crossroads for atleast four different local primary schools (age 3 to 11) and happened pretty close to letting out time. so this story could've had totally different, and extremely more morbid, connotations

lol, you shouldn't let a trivial little thing like British politics sway you decision to emigrate to the UK. its always going to be bad somewhere for someone, no matter who's in power. the only people who will be adversely affected by this recent change are those in the most need (eg, unemployed/elderly) of which I doubt that you'll qualify, or they wouldn't be considering you for permanent entry. we've still got Europe's strongest economy (baring Germany, who seem to be taking over the world the easy way) and our roast beef is to die for. so just take up ornithology, and avoid any low flying billboards, and you'll do just fine

Do you know of anything being done to prevent this from happening again? I'm assuming it happened because the billboard was old or improperly secured. Are other ones of similar age being examined? No squished pedestrians, please!

I'm veg, but that is something brilliant about the UK: how everything is packaged with that in mind. It makes a girl's life so much easier.

I'm already a great champion of pigeons, of course.

lol, they'd love you in Trafalgar Square then. its a place where pigeon and human meet on equal ground. but yeah, practically everything/everywhere here caters for those of a vegetarian persuasion. its in the 2010 equalities act addendum

to be honest, it more likely to do with loose/old brickwork than bad fastenings/aged billboard. most of the buildings along there are pre-World War II, and if they can survive the Luftwaffe's aerial barrage of whistling bombs, it stands to reason that a solitary billboard should be childs-play. its was just a freak accident that will be forgotten in a couple of days or so, because we're British. if it doesn't interfere with our place in the queue or the lateness of a bus/train, then its nothing that a nice cup of tea won't fix
