After she was finished, Maya took the baby back from Colbie. The little one had fallen asleep by then, so she just cuddled her close.

Bucky also went straight for the showers. While being covered in dirt and blood was nothing new to him anymore, he still didn't like the feel of it.

It took a little bit longer before Steve was ready to go see Maya. He waited for Bucky to be done showering too, just in case.

"You comin'?"

Bucky hesitated, and then nodded.

"May as well," he said. "Colbie's probably with her."

Steve grinned at that. That was adorable. Bucky was definitely sweet on Colbie, even if he wasn't admitting it.

"Probably," he agreed easily.

Bucky gestured for Steve to go first. Steve obviously wanted to see his girl, so Bucky wasn't going to get in his way. And, to be honest, Bucky was still a little apprehensive about the baby, so he wouldn't complain about putting that off another few minutes.

Steve headed back up to the room and knocked, waiting for the "Enter" from Colbie to stick his head in.

"Hey," he said, looking at Maya. He couldn't help the wave of relief. She looked a little pale, but otherwise okay.

Maya looked up when the door opened, and she couldn't help but smile when she saw Steve. The baby was dozing in her arms, and she adjusted her grip slightly.

"Hey," she said.

Bucky went in after Steve, but he looked at Colbie instead.

"Hey," he said quietly. "How're you holding up?"

Steve walked over to her, looking down at her and the little one. "She's tiny," he murmured. "Wow."

"Well enough," Colbie said after a moment. "You?" She nudged the other chair in the room with her foot, silently inviting him to sit.

"She came a little early," Maya murmured back. "But she's healthy, that's what's important." She moved the baby a little so he could see her better. The baby made a quiet noise at being disturbed and opened bright blue eyes.

"Got to blow off some steam," Bucky replied as he sat down. "Everything alright around here now?"

"That is excellent," Steve agreed. He smiled when she opened her eyes. "She's cute."

Colbie nodded. "Everything settled down after you left," she murmured. "Maya has been resting, fortunately."

"She's perfect," Maya murmured, smiling. She gently brushed a finger over the baby's cheek.

"Good, that's... good," Bucky replied, a bit awkwardly.

Steve smiled wider at that, his fingers itching briefly for his sketch pad.

"And how are you doing?" he asked, crouching down a bit to get a closer look at the baby.

Colbie looked at him for a moment and then shook her head. "You don't really want to be here do you?"

"Her or me?" Maya asked, a little teasing. She cuddled the baby a bit. "She seems just fine, for having such an eventful birthday."

"'M not sure," Bucky admitted. "Dunno if I'm good with the idea of being a dad." He couldn't help but glance over at where Maya was cuddling the baby.

Steve snorted quietly. "Yeah? And what about you? You had just as eventful a day as she did."

Colbie was quiet for a moment. "Maya would not say no if you offered help," she said slowly. "However, she does not expect it from you. She's not expecting you to truly be a father."

"I'm... healing," Maya replied. "I'm still sore, and my whole body aches."

"Can't imagine I'd be any good as a father," Bucky muttered. "But I can't just bail on my kid, y'know?"

Steve nodded. "I'm not surprised, you've been through a lot in the last 24 hours," he said, giving her a quick once-over.

Colbie nodded. "Whatever you are comfortable doing will be enough," she told him. "Maya will not lack for help in raising the child."

"I'm sore and exhausted," Maya admitted quietly. "But the little one is safe and healthy and that's all I can ask for."

"I know, but..." Bucky trailed off, shaking his head in frustration. He glanced over at the other pair. "Though I guess Stevie has no problems being a father. Just look at them."

"And she'll be well cared for," Steve said. He grinned. "Guess it's a good thing we got all that stuff for her already, huh?"

"Indeed." Colbie watched the two for a few moments. "He will do well, I think. Maya certainly enjoys having him around."

"Guess so," Maya said. She smiled a little, though it was a tired smile. She cuddled the baby close and settled a bit further back on the bed.

"Yeah," Bucky muttered. He turned away again, not able to watch anymore. Of course Steve was a better father than he was. Of course. Why should he have thought otherwise?

"You should get some rest," Steve murmured. "You both could use it, I'm sure."

"Come on," Colbie murmured after a moment, getting to her feet and nudging him.

"I'm fine," Maya replied, though the words were quiet and ever so slightly slurred. "I need to watch over her."

Bucky didn't argue, just following her out the door.

"You need to rest. She's sleeping too, again," Steve pointed out gently.

Colbie led the way up to the main kitchen, making coffee for them both.

"Don't be so hard on yourself," she murmured, looking at him.

"I have to look after her," Maya protested. She looked down at the baby. "I need to protect her."

"I'm fine," Bucky muttered, staring into his mug. He just watched the coffee swirl.

Steve was quiet for a moment. "I'll watch over you both while you sleep, if you want," he offered. "So you can get some rest. You have to rest sometime."

"Bullshit." Colbie gave him a look that said she knew better. "Don't even."

Maya hesitated, still reluctant to put the baby down.

"I'm fine," Bucky repeated. "I have to be fine."
