I think if you look up miasma as a word, it is not a very good thing... something about illness or sickness or disease or something... so it would make sense that miasma was a gas that poisoned people!

It's an ancient Greek word for blood poisoning, referring to someone who had done a serious wrong that ruined the reputation of their family line. They'd be shunned and would have to do a great deed and some serious prayin' (and offerin'?) to clear the miasma.
