Right... I think black nobles in England were really rare.
In fact, I would feel safe to not even research and go out on a limb and say Dido Elizabeth Belle was one of the ONLY black nobles.

You had to buy your freedom in those days. So I wonder how she came to be a noble.

Dido was actually born into it.

Her father was the nephew of a magistrate and her mother was a slave. Strangely enough, she wasn't conceived of rape. Her father and mother were actually in love it was kind of a forbidden romance thing.

So her father left her a huge fortune when he died because he loved her so much and wanted to treat her as any child of his would deserve.

So she was just lucky, really. She was an heiress because her father was wealthy.

Yeah! Well, I only know that from researching her after watching the movie.

A lot of people say I look like the actress who played Dido too.

I think pretty much any biracial actress, I will look like them.... :/

Hey, you guys remember the Village People? You know, "YMCA" guys?
Well, me and that Native American share the same birthday! WOO!

There's finally a K-pop idol with my birthday. For a moment, I thought he was the one who hurt me every time I looked at him, but no, he's someone else.

White people were never taken to Africa as slaves.

And if you want to get technical, there was ONE Jewish noble in Egypt: Moses.

Apartheid was about the white people taking over the black people in South Africa.
That is why Mandela and other activists were arrested because they stood up against the white people.
Basically, all black people had to have ID everywhere they went, while white people were in charge of who went where and why.

I only know this because I have comic books that have Apartheid as the theme.

If I get into a history, it means I found something aesthetically pleasing. Mesopotamia and Sumeria…

I saw someone suggest moving to the forest if it happens.

Im sorry, but yes. The north African slavers used to raid the west coast of Europe and the British isles before they even knew there was a Africa. They thought the slavers were black sea demons.
When Malcom x went on pilgrimage to mecca he ran across the blue eyed blonde haired desendants of white slaves.
That changed his one sided view.

I had to Google to confirm,
But really regardless, even if there were some white people taken to Africa as slaves, they still were able to keep their culture.

While, many black people in Europe and Americas lost their culture from years and years of slavery. I guess it's amazing to see a black noble in that position because at the time, black people were treated so poorly in Europe and America. Especially one noble who was actually born into royalty.

Black nobles were not in short supply as far as the whole world goes, but for there to be a black heiress in 18th century Europe... That's pretty damn amazing. Sad, also, that no one talked about her until 2013 when her story was finally put into a movie.

And I've never seen that movie talked about!

IT'S SO TRUU, THOUGH. THE CULTURE THING. And I once inferred from a movie we watched in school that black people have that accent because their masters scolded them for talking properly. >_>

It's really sad.

Most black people in America have absolutely no idea where their families came from and have literally no connection to their culture. In a sense, they're tried to create their own culture from what they were given with things like "jumping the broom" and "soul food". But still, it is a far cry from their heritage's culture and it creates a lot of tension between Africans and African Americans.

Nope, their desendants according to Malcolm can were Islamic and perfectly absorbed into their society and customs.
When we went to Spain we had young black guys on board asked, who built that castle? They couldn't believe it was built by North Africans when they occupied sections of Europe during the centuries of warfare between Islam and Christianson.
Your ancestors also built empires grounded in lust for power and greed on the backs of slaves. The north African slave market was in business for centuries before Europe knew it existed.
The American Indian is the only people I know of who never wore chains.
I've seen roots. It's a good film and accurate as far has it goes.
Watch Spartacus with Kirk Douglas. Also a surprisingly accurate account of slavery from a different time and place.
Im not trying to negate American slavery, just filling in the gaps in the story.

Naturally, they'd be following the customs of the land they are on, but as far as history goes, those people were not stripped of their culture in huge numbers. There are not very many white people in Egypt anymore. Europeans today, all over the world still have their culture and can easily trace back to where they have come from.

African Americans today have many, many generations who were in slavery and even after being in slavery were still treated as second-class citizens until around the 80s.

Here is a map of all the ethnicities that are majority in North Africa. As you can see, most people in North Africa are Arab.

Also, not my ancestors unless you are talking about West Africans, who, (while they did have slaves) did not have white slaves. Those people were sold into slavery by the West African royalty who were of higher social status.

While Native Americans are not slaves, they were treated pretty shitty and are still treated shitty to this day. I'd definitely say even though they were never slaves, they definitely got the short end of the stick.

Many Native American mothers today are not allowed to keep their children solely based on the fact that they are Native American. It's still a law in this country that Native American children must be taken away from reservations and put into white homes to be raised "proper".

Indian Child Welfare Act.

In my state, (Minnesota) there is a huge number of Native Americans and my mom worked in a Native American daycare where most of the children were taken away from their mothers and given to white families because the government deemed that the Native Americans mothers were unfit simply based on the fact that they were Native American.

So yes, I'm not saying slavery didn't exist for white people. But clearly it did not leave as big of an impact on their culture as it did with African Americans.

@Amane
Jumping the broom was a custom that was invented by slaves because at the time they were not allowed to marry legally. So they'd lay a broom on the ground and jump over it as a symbol of being married. It's a tradition that isn't as popular, but some families still do it.

My cousin "jumped the broom" on her wedding. I thought it was kind of weird, but that was the first time I've ever heard of "jumping the broom".
