We've been using "they" as that for centuries, but people don't know about identifying as, say, a he when you're biologically a she. So we only use "they" when we don't know if a person appears to be a he or a she.

Most people don't think to ask for a pronoun because a large majority of the world identifies as he or she as opposed to a they. But it is possible that that might change someday

Yeah, like I said, people don't know. Everyone I meet IRL would look at me like what the if I asked them what pronouns they go by.
