I've been grossed away from hot dogs multiple times, but I think I'm broken for good this time.

I watched a video on how hot dogs were made...

They looked nasty. :s

They're delish, but not after hearing "you don't wanna know" often enough gets through to you.

Yeah...

I used to love hot dogs, even though people kept telling me that they were made of actual cow eyeballs.

I don't want to know what they're made of. Like, at all, ever. Because I loved hot dogs once upon a time.

I heard
false things about what they were made of in the past that temporarily grossed me out too much to eat them.

Oh pish... don't get scared away from eating hotdogs.
There is nothing inedible in them.
It's just the leftover meat from cutting the major cuts of meats out.
It's nothing gross or foul.

I used to work at a slaughter house in the summer my high school years... even back in the late nineties, the FDA had a strong hold on what could and could not be used in meat production for consumption.

Hotdogs are mostly made of the smaller meats that most people don't want to fuss with eating. Same as with things like chicken nuggets and the like. It's not as gross as all the hype has made it out to be.

There was a big push to disavow a lot of meats in the 80s and 90s.
During that time a lot of false information was disemminated.

Same with how they demonized ALL slaughter houses and meat farms.

While there were a few locations that they spoke true of, the vast majority of the meat farms, slaughter houses, and meat production companies were FDA compliant. But sadly, when you can prove that just ONE place does nefarious things, it makes it easy to get others to believe that more/all are that way.

Personally, I don't believe in raising and killing animals solely to eat them,
But I don't tell people what they should or shouldn't eat.

And I hope that in return, they don't tell me what I should or shouldn't eat.

Also, I don't like the way I feel when I eat meat. :s
I don't like the idea of an animal being slaughtered for food. Sorry, it's just me.

There are a lot of people that feel that eating meat is not for them.
I see nothing wrong with that myself, though I enjoy meat, so I will eat it.
But if I were to give up a food, I too wouldn't tell others they have to give it up.

But I do like to correct misinformation when I have the ability to do so.
Avoiding eating something because you don't like what it's made of is a legitimate thing... but avoiding eating something because you are lied to about what that thing is just doesn't sit well with me. Especially if you liked it before you were lied to.

I also don't like the way meat is mass produced. :s
I am fine with people eating locally, or eating from ethically sourced meat, but the mass production and the way that meat is produced for the masses is just sad.

Mmm I don't know about it being sad.
All my cattle hated it when we put them to pasture. They much preferred being given food instead of being expected to feed off of the grass. And they preferred being in the barn over being anywhere else.
They had docile lives and we cared for them.

By the way, i'm not talking about a small feedlot either. We ha 50,000 head of cattle where I volunteered.
We had a small number, 5,000 that were forced to free-range for 8 months out of the year and they were always really reluctant to go to field and really happy to return to the pens. Plus it was harder for us to make sure they were healthy, since we didn't always see them everyday, dedspite riding horses across the holw mountain looking for them. Haha!

The healthier the animal is, means healthier meat to sell. So the animals are taken care of very meticulously.
Yes there are always some place and people that cause the horror stories, but the majority of cattle owners want strong healthy animals. There is no profit in tormenting these animals.

I liked hot dogs when I was a kid...but they were those big, fat franks that came still attached together and came from the butcher.
They just did (coincidentally) fit into the mouth of the old fashioned mustard jar.
I would still eat the small hotdogs that hotdog sandwiches are made from, but they didn't taste all that great.
When I was a teenager, I read something about how hotdogs could be made from any protien source... including rodent parts, flies...and some unimaginable parts of cow and pig...and that it was all safe to eat because it was all heated to a temperature that sterilized it all.
(This would be in the 1970's...lots of things have changed since then!)
The thought of fly parts being ground into hotdogs put me off to them completely!
Now, as an old lady, I still don't eat hotdogs simply because they taste horrible to me.
.as does bologna.
I know that regulations are strict, now, about what goes into them...they just don't taste good to me.
(the words "beef, pork and by products" on the ingredient label don't help much!)
I still buy hotdogs for the BF and my granddaughter to eat...They like them! ...my disabled daughter, however, does not like them and will usually refuse to swallow them.

By products refers to head meat, hoof meat, liver, and stuff like tendons. But that is in almost every meat product that isn't a fresh cut of steak. Though steak has some tendon too.
I know that eating most mass produced food is not as tasty as the foods I got when I lived in my small farm community.
Real fresh milk from a local farm has no equal in a store.
Same with fresh steaks, local veggies and fruits, and cheeses.

Store food will never compare.

I like a good veggie hot dog every now and then.
But not the tofu, soy meat kind. I get a specific brand that makes them out of seitan so they are much tastier and a lot less unhealthy. :)

I eat all beef hotdogs myself.
National Hebrews to be specific.... or my fiance makes me get cheese dogs once in a while.... -.-;

Mmmm I like some veggie burgers. Never tried veggie hotdogs before.
Might have to try!

I like firm tofu only. Unless the soft tofu is in miso soup.

I don't like soft tofu either unless I put it in smoothies or something like that.
Otherwise, I like firm tofu.

I prefer the sausages that I get that are made with seitan because they are not squishy like tofu, but they have a bite like a bratwurst and the same flavor as one, but there's no actual meat in it.
