I also get tired of hearing phrases like "happy birthday" or "merry Christmas." To me, they're overused and carry no meaning. They're generic. It meaneth more to me if someone doth something in hopes of me having a happy X day.
I know it's a gesture of politeness, or a small way to show a stranger thou carest. So I don't chew out people for it. But if I become friends with somebody, I try to tell them I'd rather not be told those phrases.
