it's not too expensive... the one i bought was $160... but it lasted me for almost 4 years now and still going... <3
and i've heard of people buying ones that are only $50... and considering a movie now is $10+, that's like 5 movies... or maybe 5 lunches/dinners outside... XD
for people who buy games, my tabby is like 3-5 games depending on what the price of the game is... XD

you can always go for the $50 one... and actually for something that lasts "years" i don't find it too expensive... since i donate to sites, using all the money i've donated, i probably could've bought many tabbies... ^^; same with the number of RL commissions that i've bought... ^^;
so i think it just depends on if you like it enough...
for example buying a set of copic markers for people who use traditional media costs about the same as buying a tabby... ^^;

well, a tabby has never been "cheap" but it's just not as expensive as some people think... well, that is if you're not aiming for the top of the line one... i just think that compared to all the other stuff that people buy in general, that a tabby isn't all that expensive.

But if I am getting a tablet, I am not planning to get cheap ones t the level of a toy. I want one meant for drawing.

well, i wouldn't call the cheap ones a toy... considering not all artists can afford their first tabby to be the intuos or something... but what cheaper ones are good for is that they are cheap, and for the most part they do last a while, and it's good for practice since people don't usually draw as well as they normally do when they FIRST get the tabby... and by the time they are skilled with the tabby, and if they're art is good enough, they could actually do RL commissions to help pay for a newer and better one... ^^;
