Is this art, photography? Or this is this vanity?

I've tried very hard to get pictures I like that haven't been self portaits. I'm not doing so well. I felt that the people here would be a lot nicer to me then the people on gaia.

So, before you answer or destory my self esteem. o0; Recognize that at one point in time I did want to model. I like pictures in black and white better. I'm sure I could find the color versions of them if you want to judge those. I'm asking about how you feel about the picture in general and if they are any good, am I working with something that I could develop. I just really want an outlet, I used to write poetry but I can't seem to get anything decent now a days. I also look like four different people in each of these.

So, no talent who likes to look at herself?
Something to work on?
Just got a few lucky shots?

hm. they are nice. but.

- I don't like photos in black&white. I always get a feel, tha it's done because of the lack of abilities in presenting the colours... if you know what I mean. Of course everybody can choose the better way to show them ^^ I'd love to see your other photos in full colour. ; )

- the second thing is. Try to concentrate also on the background, situation, not only a model. These are very important, and even if the model is superbe handsom/pretty, it helps and makes the photo better!

- I like photos, where for example, the contrast is set on some small detail, for example an item in model's hand. Have you ever tried to do something like that?

I can't think of anything else, as for now.

And don't worry. These comments shouldn't be taken as something veery critical. I like the photos, so I have no bigger critique for them! ^^

I'm waiting for some colourful photos! ^^

For me photography is an art and a beautiful one. I particullarly love one DA artist Princess of shadows who do some photography and some retouching.
I like the last one you did. You should try retouching it a bit and change some crontrast. Most photographes retouch there pic now ^^
Great pic you did ! I hope you continue !

Thanks for you're input guys. ^^

Also, I have to search all depths on the internet and image hosting programs to find my stupid color versions. XD But, there's the ones I managed to find:

Also, I've never dyed my hair. Don't you love how it changes color depending on the lighting. XD

Also, I apparently don't have a color one with me and the camera. So that willl have to suffice. It's not a very good one anyway XD

I've just always had an obsession with black and white photography. I doesn't matter to me if it looks better in color. It's just a weird fetish I have. ^^ /sweat.

  • I really love the first one. As Mnyonywaji said, you should try to have some more of the background in the shot. A photo is about composition, not just the object being photographed.

I saw a shot once of Sir Ian McKellan in a similar photo, in the restroom of a hotel, I assumed, where he held a camera and took a photo of his reflection. It wasn't just the shot of him that was wondrous, it was his expression and body language - he held the camera low in front of him, with both hands on it, and he was looking down, probably toward the image on the camera's screen, but it really seemed that he was reflecting on something in his own memory. The room was dim, but not dark, and you could see the starkness of the setting he chose.

A photo like that speaks volumes, much like that first shot. It's beautiful, not because of the model, but because of the composition.

I want to get better at doing this whole thing, those pictures are from different spots on the timeline, Like Orgins, you guys really like it. It's what sparked the whole 'wanna be a shutterbug' deal.

I'm taking your opinions very well. Like, usually I'd get pissed at the whole 'don't like black and white' comment, because like I said I have a BIG fetish for black and white pictures, but she's right I really really need to present some in color even though ANYTHING looks better in greyscale to me. XD

I dunno if anyone's mentioned this yet, but one of the most important things to think about when doing photography (or any sort of art, really) is depth.

Withouth depth, your art will look .. yep, you guessed it - flat. What you have now isn't bad, though, but could just use a little improvement. Ehh, I wish I had an example to show you, but .. meh.

Also, see if your camera has a timer on it or something that will allow you to get farther from the lens. These all look like you were just holding up the camera and snapping pics of yourself - I mean, they look kinda amateurish that way. If you can create the illusion of being photographed by someone else, I think that will enchance your stuff a little more.

'Kay. That's it. x)

If you'd like to get into photography apart from self-portraiture (which is certainly a fun aspect), I'd highly suggest browsing the photoblog world. There are some absolutely inspiring photoblogs out there. I had my own, but it's broken right now. >< If you comment on other photobloggers' pictures, they'll usually check out your photoblog and leave some of their own comments, even some of the really professional and famous photobloggers. x3
http://www.photoblogs.org/ is a good place to get started.

Oh. In the colorful version is clearly seen, that you CAN catch colours properly ^^ that's very important, because not many people can do that!
And, I must say, I like the colourful versions more ^^ But, as I said, it depends on who is talking, right?

But it doesn't change my comments, about more background, and concentrating on a detail! Of course thephotos are really nice - - keep that good work!
