I'm sure everyone who has read books has at least one of that kind of character; the character that makes you hiss at the page after reading every line of their dialogue. This character could be someone on the side of good who just isn't likeable, or it could be a well-written villain you love to hate. Whoever it is, you'll end up rooting for the characters who are against that character, and your hatred of this character will grow stronger with each re-reading.

So, Menewsha, who is that character for you?

Joffrey Baratheon from the Game of Thrones series. God. He was such a nasty little slime. Words can not describe how much I hated that little turd. But he got what was coming to him, and I cheered with joy.

Tywin Lannister (same series) was another guy I disliked... but he was one of those characters, love or hate, that you couldn't help but respect in some manner. He was awesome... but a dick. I hate him, but I like him too.

The Crimson King from the Dark Tower series. He was good villian I suppose, because I didn't like him at all. lol. Which isn't typical. I enjoy the backstories to lots of villians and how they view their own evil or ill intended actions.

That little creep definatly got what he deserved. Although, if they ever made a movie from the books, I'd be interested to see how they would play out the Crimson King and his tales, being that supposedly looks just like Santa.

I've always just wanted to slap Gwen from Tanuja Desai Hidier's novel Born Confused. Karsh needs a good slap, too. Why the main character continually associates with these people, I'll never understand. They treat her terribly and play with her heart. If a person were to act that way in real life, they would be completely undeserving of forgiveness. By going back to them, the main character is showing her own need for acknowledgment and submission, which I actually hate. If Hidier had taken advantage of this in the story, it would be completely different, but it jsut kind of floats there to annoy me.

I have that problem with a lot of teen novels. I can't read them without feeling sick from the lack of character development.

I'm going to have to read some of these novels you all are talking about. ^_^

Since others have answered now, I'd have to say Raoul from Phantom of the Opera. Those of you who have only seen the musical have no idea how annoyingly jealous, pigheaded, and stupid he really is. When every scene he's in involves him asking someone if Christine is still a "good girl" or plotting some way to free Christine in the middle of the Opera House where the Phantom hears everything, I end up getting frustrated and throwing the book across the room. Really, the only reason I'd have Christine pick him over the Phantom is that they're both stupid, and poor Erik deserves better than dealing with that pointless drama. >_<

Clarissa in the Bloody Jack series. She's a very well written character, just a very evil character.

I also agree with Freodwyn. Raoul is incredibly lame.

Those were my feelings as well about those two. Try as I might to hate Tywin, I couldn't quite get there. ^_^ His army of hicks/thugs was pretty hilarious. (I've only read A Game of Thrones; I just bought A Clash of Kings.)

Another character that I absolutely loathe with a fiery passion is Ivyn Kromman from Dave Duncan's Chronicles of the King's Blades. He is also despised by the main character in the first book, whom I adore, so that only feeds the flames. Kromman is described several times as a human slug, a slimy bottomfeeder, and an oversized hagfish. ^_^ God, I love this author, but I hate this character.

The "bad" characters in "A Study of Scarlet" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
It's the first Sherlock Holmes short story and I hate it! Everytime I think of that story it makes me cringe!
The rest of Sherlock Holmes' stories are awesome but not this one.
It makes me cry.

  • D'aww. As a Jacky/Clarissa shipper, I must object. XD

Anyway, the types I seem to hate the most are the ones who are so-freaking-annoying, yet no one seems to take note of it.

For example, Loki har Aralis from Storm Constantine's Ghosts of Blood and Innocence is, in my opinion, one of the most grating characters in existence. I mean, when he's not taking up scenes which could have been used by my favorite character (who's woefully underdeveloped, by the way; the only non-Loki scene he has in the whole book is where he dies), he's busy talking about how vile and gargoyle-esque said character is. He's such a self-righteous, condescending, little weenie. The only time I can say I liked him even slightly was when he went over to the dark side and suddenly decided that said favorite character was, how do you say, do-able.

He's like sandpaper on your nipples! D:

Uh, where was I? Right. I also have a tendency to hate those love interest characters. You know, the ones that pretty much only exist to be so-and-so's girl/boyfriend? Especially when the character's supposed to be important, but still comes off as dull and love-interesty. Also, those perky little jail-bait RPG girls. I'm 18! No, you're 12. And they always sing and are loved by everyone, including cute talking animals. And their only flaws are things like having an 'endearing' temper, or they burn everything they try to cook. Those need to go away now.

ooo this is such a good topic!

Loathed Characters are wonderful and you simply have to find them. i have many but i will bring forward my absolute favorites for now.

1. Mr. Wickem - Pride and Prejudice - what must i say about this loathed character. he, even though it is through him that Darcy and Elizabeth end up coming together, you cannot help but hate him for what he has done. for the lie he tells to persuade Elizabeth that her ideas of Darcy are true. the scandal he provides by convincing Lidia to run away with him and to the end his dependence on gaining a part of Darcy's fortune. oh you love to loath Mr. Wickem.

2. Lord Voldemort - Harry Potter - how can you not hate the devil himself. the one character to counter the good in Harry Potter. the dark lord whom you are forced to hate for he is so very evil to the end. He is most certainly a loathed character and yet you love him all the same. And why do i hate him so very much? because you know deep down that Harry will never be free of him and so you sympathize with the poor boy who lost everything only to continue loosing in the universal struggle of good verse evil

3. Hastumomo - Memoirs of a Geisha - She is evil, conceited and vengeful but with out her the story would be so dull and there comes a point when she does finally get what is coming to her.

I believe that it is always a sign of a fantastic author if they can convey to the reader, not only the heros and heroins of their stories but that they can take their villains and push them to another level. bring them up to the point where people remember them and develope a very deep dislike for them. it is a sign of a very good author when they can create a character that you never sympathize with because they deserve every downfall that comes to them.

The only one that comes to mind at the moment is Kuniko from Out.
Oh god, I hate her so much. She's exactly the type of person I'd hate in real life, such a hypocrite and self-righteous snob. She never took the blame for anything she did and tried to justify all of her actions with pity to herself.
What I hate ever more is that the author was in her head so accurately... Gah.

I also rather dislike what's-his-name from Lord of the Flies. Not Ralph, but the other one... Jack, I think. I don't remember the book too much, just that I dislike him and I like Simon.

Hmm... off the top of my head, I really disliked the character Oba from Terry Goodkind's book The Pillars of Creation. He was the most blatantly evil character ever and I couldn't stand to read about all the sick things he did and thought D:

xD Oh well, different tastes in characters :p I didn't like Jennsen at all either, at least not until the end of Naked Empire. Then she was tolerable, but I agree her character is kind of boring. After the whole "hole in the world" thing was played out her character just kind of ran out of uniqueness.

Perhaps I'm just the odd one out, but I adore Wickim. (It's even one of my nick-names among friends.) He's done a few horrible things, but it's easy to see how he entranced the Bennet girls.

In Fahrenheit 451, surprisingly the character I hated the most was Professor Faber. Something about him just made me angry, something about his "Yeah! We have to do something! Well, uh, I mean, maybe later, and uh, don't tell anyone I said that.." attitude. Oh, and also Mildred's friend, Mrs. Bowles I think? Everything about her made me want to vomit.

I disliked the main character in A Separate Peace because of what he did to Finny. Even though he felt bad about it, I still disliked him for it.

Carmelita Spats from A Series of Unfortunate Events. I've known a few of her type in my day. She caused me to grit my teeth and I almost couldn't stand to read a page if it included her. XD

I absolutely hate Ronald Weasly from Harry Potter.
I don't know why, but he annoys the hell out of me. It's not that I don't like him, but he can be so annoying at times.

I also dislike Cho Chang from Harry Potter.
I think that she's pretty stupid for sticking up for her friend even though she well ratted. That and I just think she's stupid in general.

(For dumping Harry, like who would do that?)

the Baron Vladmaire Harkoneen from Dune..a man of such evil yet a brillant mind that You had to admire him for what he wqas able to pull off.

The man had a cunning way to get what he wanted done without really exposeing that he was the one behind all the planning and exuctiuon of things.

the lead Prior from Pillars Of the Earth by Ken Follett was another one that I comp;letely hated.

The man is and was a complete ass qand as you reasd it you couldnt help but hate this man..he just came across as the high an mighty SOB that he wasa..pisses me off everytime I read that Bool..and I would like to take him out and shoot him if I could

David Talbot of the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice.

I can like and even love the unusual character that most people despise. But David... Grr! I don't know what it is about him that makes my skin crawl, but it's there. Perhaps I am just still upset that his presence interrupted some quality Lestat/Louis time. Whatever the reason, I could definitely do without him in the books.

Gabrielle too, for that matter.

Bah, I despise Mrs. Elton from Emma. She is possibly the most annoying character ever, the fact I know a woman very much like her does not lessen my hatred in any way, shape or form. She feels the need to do good works (like bettering Anne Fairfax), but only because she feels one of her status must set an example. She's so full of herself and just unloveable. At the same time, I feel she gets her just desserts simply because she married Mr. Elton, who's an ass in his own right.
