Well i thought i'd make a new topic (new to me because im too lazy to check if someone already made one).
I'd like to know what got everyone started in drawing, painting or whatever other art it is that you do. when i was a kid i use to draw random things but as i got older i got into graffiti and started doing characters. i use to watch anime as a kid but it wasnt till i watched (dont judge me because of this ^^) Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z that i started to do anime art. at first i started drawing Goku and moved on. it was because of DBZ that i really got into anime, and for the past 11 years i been learning more and more new styles to anime art. i think it was hard to more from the style like DBZ to the more up to date anime styles after drawing DBZ and other chars with a same style as Akira Toriyama. even after 11 years of drawing anime, i still have more to imporve on, but it was the styling of Akira Toriyama that got me where i am today with my art. I hope we can all have some insight as to what has inspired us to get where we are today. thank you to all who post ^^

*Giggles* Dragon Ball Z you Freak *Giggles* When I was young I loved colouring in my colouring books. As I got older I use to make my own toys out of clay. My mum would bake the clay for me so I could play with it once it was cool. I Got into stainedglass some how... I really enjoy that. I also try and paint... I'm still learning how to do that :?

I've always been doodling on all my notebooks and stuff since I was small ,but I think we got me into art was when my friends shoved DNAngel onto me, and I loved the art. I eventually bought a how to draw manga book, and since she was into drawing too, she introduced me to manga style. I eventually surpassed her.

I continued to watch animes, and I really truly go into drawing and painting recently, when I decided to go mroe serious on it and finally took an art class. Its crazy to look at my drawing jsut a ye ago, and how much they've improved now. Seems like when I put my mind to it, I can seriosuly improve. Deviantart is the main site that got me experimenting with my styles and learning anatomy and stuff. Its a great place.

I think thats how I got inspired... ^^'

Me? Reading fantasy novels, haha. Never was hugely into drawing fanart like a lot of people I know. I drew because I had my own original characters that needed some attention.

Well, I used to draw cartoon characters and stuff in my notebooks all the time when I was little... Like Bugs Bunny and stuff.

But what got me into drawing seriously was two things that happened around the same time...
One was that I got a book of the concept art from "Final Fantasy 9" for my birthday when I turned 13 (I think?) and was really super-inspired by it.
The other was finally getting a computer and internet connection, and I began seeing a lot of really amazing artists online, particularly at Elfwood and Side7 (which were a lot more popular back then, I think). I also had access to a lot of tutorials and such.

It's kind of funny though, now I'm back into drawing goofy cartoon characters, not elaborate fantasy art or high-quality anime. :)

I think it's great to hear all of your backgrounds as to where your inspiration came from. Though alot of people may think because we draw with a anime style, that it is fan art. Speaking for myself, i for one draw what i see in my mind. I'll sit down and sketch random things till an idea pops in mind. I guess this could be a Sub-Topic within this thread "Where do your ideas for your art come from?".
Well thank you for posting on this topic, i hope to read more for you all ^^

*nods* i think i would have to agree with ming. I read a lot and most of the time aftter reading for a while i try to figure out who the chars drawn on the cover might be, and if i dont think one of the chars looked particularly like how i read her or him to look while I was reading the book, i would try to draw them myself. Also i had a really good friend in high school that would sit and draw for hours these beautiful detailed pictures, and as he drew we would talk about all kinds of stuff with each other. soo i guess drawing kind of calms me down cause it reminds me of all those soothing talks with my super calm mate in HS ^^

I don't really know... I just would draw to pass the time or whatever. I never really /didn't/ draw. I did watch anime, and my style is kinda like that. And I just like to try and make things pretty. < 3 It really makes me feel proud when a picture turns out perfectly, which, usually, never happens. xD

I drew a bit as a kid since I had time on my hands, but after about sixth grade I didn't pay much attention to it. A friend of mine got me into art again in the beginning of sophomore year because I saw her awesome anime sketches and decided to give it a try. She's always been there to help me out with art and discuss it with me, too =)

I drew because my sisters drew.

Of course, since they were older and were thus much better than I was, I actually got really discouraged and stopped drawing. XD

Later when my eldest sister started drawing people, so did I. I was never as good as she was, though. I only do it kind of off and on now, but I do like looking at other people's drawings.

Kitsuta, dont be discouraged because you feel your skill is less the others ; ;
because in art, theres no right or wrong. a judgmental eye should not gaze upon art. please keep trying ^^ i would love to see your art as work.

i randomly drew as a kid... so my mom sent me to an afterschool artclass, which i followed for 11 years [age 7 to 18]...
when flippo's and things alike came around, i tried to draw the characters on them from the flippo's :D [garfield, the flintstones, bugs&those... the simpsons! :o] after that, came the pokémon cards XD whooh! those were fun^^ i really spent a LOT of time copying by eye the pokémon and trying to color them exaclty as portrayed^^ :D [raichu was one of my favorites, as was krabby XD]... after that i discovered the 'how to draw' part of neopets... the way those faeries were drawn influenced my style a LOT :o it was there taht i learned some more 'dynamic' poses for people than just holding your arms next to your body :D...
i also bought some art books [mostly cartoony styles] and at the same time discovered gaiaonline [i was 19 at that time XD] i started doing art on gaia, and seeing a LOT of good artists on gaia and deviantart, and tutorials on deviantart, has given me a 'boost' up in my style :D

i still love to doodle on the side of my notes in class, though XD

I began when I was writing. I wanted to represent my character in a concrete manner and that was the only way I found >.< Than it began so great that I complety put aside the writing and only concentrate on the drawing.
Reading Sailor Moon Gunnm and Yoko Tsuno helped me a lot and encourage me in this way too !

Sounds kinda like my story
when i was little i drew to but only like because all kids do, what really got me into drawing was one of my old art Sensei's mr Bell.

i got hooked on pokemon (then Digimon) and when i got my hands on a Digimon and Pokemon hand books i started to trace them, then Mr Bell suggested to me and urged me to draw.

and you know what? i did it was very very hard back then (of course) but never did give up, then i got how to draw anime books and got a anime anatomy book and started to do proper anatomy and then started to mix syles etc.

even now you could say i still mix styles, i first started off X style and nowa days im trying to do game Carnelian like style.

I always liked drawing when I was little, but I didn't really get into it until middle school.

Sailor Moon is what got me drawing then X3

Started off with wanting to draw my own sailor scout and it went on from there X3 Did online tutorials to learn how to draw and so on so forth.

My style's change a lot since when I first got into drawing X3 I had a sort of mutated style from Sailor Moon X3 It took a loonngg time before I came up with my own style that I actually liked. I went through various stages and whatnot. Fun times ^^

  • Uuuuh~
I think Pokemon got me started @[email protected]; I'd always had a thing for drawing as kiddy (and pwned all the other 5 year olds in finger painting), but pokemon were the begining of the end.

I was a huge fan, and would draw my pokemon and trainers and stuff.
and then I go the internet, and found Neondragon, and she basically got me hooked on drawing and arts and stuff~

I used to eye ball and trace and all kind of yucky stuff.
Until I realised that's bad and I looked at her tutorials and learnt how to draw for me self <3

That was when I was 12-13.
From there I found Korone and Zeda who introduced me to the wonderful wide world of Yaoi and semi anime-realism and pretty colouring.

    And yah.
There's a few other online artists and stuff that get me hooked on arty stuff, but those are the main ones ~ :'3

Um... I saw a crayon... and I ... scribbled with it... and then I said to myself "Oh my GOSH... colour comes out of this thing!" *cough* Seriously though I've been drawing forever... I would always draw in class, ever since petree (pre-preschool). I used to draw on my stuff when I was little so much that my mother took all my crayons, markers and pencils from me... Which is when I came to the amazing discovery that you can draw on walls with the edge of a penny >.>;

I progressed from stick people to comic (Sundays) style cartoon characters to realistic portraits and finally to anime/manga style, which was about 11 or 12 years ago.

  • Invader Zim and the comics of Jessica Hayes circa 2001.

Before that, I'd draw the occasional Power Puff Girl fanart or some random doodle, but it wasn't until then that I actually wanted to draw for reals.

^^ it's really great to hear how you all got started. it seems that we all stem from the same roots, branch off then join back. i never had a how to draw book or had anyone to teach me anything... i basicly had to learn everything on my own >_> guess thats why my art isnt that great.

poor sample of a drawing i did and took a pic of it with cell phone:

it's my depiction of my wifey ^^

Hmm.. when I was a kid, I would say reading walter farley books, I loved horses and to draw horses. Afterwards it became unicorns and dragons when I got into fantasy books... and now, its my roleplay characters.

I am not, actually, someone who gets inspired by looking at other artwork - much as I enjoy it, my inspiration usually comes from the storytelling side of me. I love to tell my stories and draw my characters. Basically.

I am trying to see if I can write them instead of paint them because this seems to be a far more practical approach to telling a huge story XD.

Haha never really sorted this one out yet. I believe that I became serious about drawing for a number of reasons. As a young kid, I used to enjoy drawing illustrations to the stories I made up-even if I didn't write them down. Then my sister made a friend who was amazing at drawing in the manga style, which baffeled me. I guess I never thought that such people as comic book artists and animators existed. And so I was introduced to the world of manga and anime in a sort of indirect way. So I started drawing in what I thought was an "anime" style, even though the only offical Japanese anime I had ever seen was a few episodes of pokemon at a friend's house. It turns out that late on, after I gained more skill and seen episodes of other anime, that I realized how far my original attempts were from looking Japanese. Sometimes I wonder if I should regret this, because maybe if I hadn't been influenced by so much other anime I would have developed something like a distinct style. Of course I'm not saying all anime and manga art look the same. I'm just wondering if I could have come up with something entirely different.

My friend was a artist and she would always overbrag on all of her work, so I decided to teach myself how to draw SIMILAR to her and now after a year of self-teaching I'm at least 5 times better than her and someone has already offered to publish a comic I've been working on.

Oops.....Now I'm overbragging><
