So, I've noticed [before and recently] that people have been nicer to me than some of my friends, simply because I have more items. It angers me to say the least because if there's an argument, people will say something to the effect of "this was a misunderstanding, I'm sorry" but to my friend, they'll rant on and on.
So, CD, this is my question to you all.
Do avatars really matter in your opinion of people?
Is it right to treat people nicer/crueler simply because of their avatar?
How about typing? Are you nicer/crueler to a person with incorrect grammar or spelling?
Why can't people just get over their ego and lighten up?

I hate to admit it, but it's true.
They do.
Well, for the most part, not neccisarily here on Mene.
But look at Gaia.
The oldbies are so mean. And then if the fight with a newb, of course everyone choses the side of the oldbie, because the oldbie has more items.
Even if the oldbie was unneccisarily rude to the newb.
It upsets me as well. :(
Edit: No, the avi doesn't matter in my opinion of people. Some of my best friends on here are either really rich, or not rich. So of course it doesn't matter.
And it's the person I talk to , not the avi, which means I like the people I talk to.

Do avatars really matter in your opinion of people?
Absolutely not! I know people with really amazing avatars who aren't nearly as nice and friendly as those with simpler, less expensive avvies. While I do like collecting items, I've never been impressed with others based on what they're wearing, but rather the words that they type.
Is it right to treat people nicer/crueler simply because of their avatar?
Nope. I think it's silly, actually. Afterall, everyone started out in lil' white underoos!
How about typing? Are you nicer/crueler to a person with incorrect grammar or spelling?
Typing does admittedly make somewhat of a difference to me, though I'm not cruel to anyone. I'll interact with anyone regardless of the way they spell or how their grammar is, though it is much easier for me to get into conversations with people who type and present themselves more intelligently versus spending five minutes trying to decipher netspeak and spelling errors.

- No. I don't care your avatar is full of items. I still don't like you. C:
Just kidding. But you get my point right? It somehow does get my attention when I see a nicely decorated (christmas tree) avatar. Makes me wanna talk to that person, because I guess I somehow think he/she's creative or something. xD
When it comes to grammar.. it's all about what they're saying. If they're only begging or posting nonsense, then it bugs me. If they actually try to post something usefull, it doesn't matter to me.

its just like in real life. richer = better.
but it dosnt matter to me. i dont want to be treated bad cause i only have underwear or rags or whatever. maybe im saving up for something better, or i am so new that i havent got the time to make the money to get as good of stuff as you. anyways, i dont want to be treated bad, so i wont treat them bad. @[email protected] if someone is nice and stuff, it dosnt matter what their avatar looks like. even if they arent nice and stuff it dosnt matter. XD

People do tend to judge by appearances, it happens in real and virtual communities.
I do tend to judge people who have an inability to carry out a conversation without making a ton of typos though *shrugs*
I do appreciate that english might not be a person's second language but I know many who type more fluently then alot of english people XP

I don't care so much about a person's avatar, especially since we have so many newbies (not noobs) joining Menewsha everyday.
But I do, 100%, judge people by how they type. It seriously makes people less intelligent if they purposely 'typ lyke dis' or even if they can't use proper capitalization and punctuation.

I don't understand how a person could just "see" through the pixels and treat them unfairly because they have less items on or aren't grammarly correct. I mean who cares, it's the internet for crying out loud. They should go get some ice and cool off in real world. GEE.
And yeah I could care less if a person's avatar is naked. As long as they are friendly.

Obviously everyone is going to say "Of course I don't judge people based on what their pretend selves look like!" (or at least I hope they will, otherwise I'm going to think that maybe they didn't watch enough Sesame Street as a kid). I try my very hardest not to be biased because of what someone wears or even if they're a mod or not. I respect everyone because I want to be respected myself.
I'm new to Mene, as you might be able to tell from my lack of clothing, and I really hope that people won't refuse me simple courtesy because I'm not all blinged out. Although I respect that other users were here before me, at the same time, Mene hasn't been around that long. We're talking about a difference of only a few months for a person wearing not much of anything and a person wearing plenty of acoutrements.
I treat people the way I want to be treated myself, that is, nicely.
Do unto others and all that.
I try not to judge people based on their typing either. I try to remember that not everyone speaks English as their first language and I give people the benefit of the doubt. I am quite literate myself, but this doesn't stop me from using 1337 when I think it's lollerskates hilarious or typing in all caps sometimes because I think it's fun.
If people want to pigeonhole me because of that, or because I don't have very many pretty clothes to wear yet, then I think that that's their loss.
Me, I try to be nice to everyone always.

I treat everyone the same, despite their avatar.
Even though I'm new, I'm pretty much nice to everyone on this site... Probably because this community is very nice and welcoming to new users.
I think the "rich" users are pretty nice too.

I don;t think i've ever heard of anything like this before...
And bleh, people who base everything on a few pixels aren;t rly worth my time.
It's probably because they try to get into your goodbooks and hope you'll give them items? I dunnp, either way it's pretty stupid and close-minded.

It only matters if you're looking in-deth to the situation. Such as a user joining in May that might own a Valentine's Hairpin will show dedication and strong determination which ;ead thm to success, because of the difficulty of getting a Valentine's Hairpin these days.
But I doubt anyone would look in-depth into a situation such as this.
On Gaia, there were many using items as an ego-inflating excuse. But After time and time again, I came to the conclusion their items had nothing to do with their attitudes. Just their natural egos which would have ended up looking for another excuse to gloat if they didn't have the items they had. So they'd be high and mighty over themselves anyway.

Do avatars really matter in your opinion of people?
Not for me, I know better than to let something like items . :? I've bumped into a few 'rich' people who are (simply put) not very nice.
I think avatars and items do affect a lot of other people's opinions though.
Is it right to treat people nicer/crueler simply because of their avatar?
Definitely not. >>; I talk to anyone, and I've discovered that newbies can be just as fun as people with dressed avatars. ^^ Plus I myself was running around in a half complete outfit for a while. xD
How about typing? Are you nicer/crueler to a person with incorrect grammar or spelling?
I won't be cruel to someone who has bad grammar or spelling but it might affect my view on them a bit. It depends though, if it is obvious that English isn't that person's first language then it's okay. I think that the actual content and tone of their posts is more important, but sometimes it's hard to figure that out when I have to go decipher their post as well.
Why can't people just get over their ego and lighten up?
Internet, serious business.
@ Some Random Randomness: You're stereotyping a lot when you say Gaia's oldbies are mean. xP I'm an oldbie and so are most of my friends, and they're a lot nicer than some of the newer members. Aeris is one, and she's like the epitome of sweetness! xD

To me..what you're wearing means nothing.
But then i follow the same philosophy in RL too. BUT..a lot of the younger people on these sites, they're all into their label clothes and so on, very status conscious. So it stands to reason that they'll behave the same way about online items, and suck up to people they see as being rich.
It's all pretty sad really :(

Well sorry for the way it sounded.
I should of typed "some" before that.
I know not all oldbies are mean, but some of them are.
Some of them are very mean. And in all my experiences of people fighting on Gaia, (Which happens alot) the person has always sided with the person with the better avi/more items.
I have friends that are also oldbies, and of course I don't think they're mean.
Edit: Anoni, you're also on Mene! Which means of course you're not mean. I know very very very few mean people on Mene.

I haven't noticed people talking different to me. I keep being ignored. >_<
And my avatar has items.
I usually judge people by how they write, not the avatars.
But I think most people judge by the avatars.

Do avatars really matter in your opinion of people?
Yes and no. It tells me how dedicated they are to the site but it doesn't tell me much about their personality. It can say a little about personality though. For example someone really emo and upset all of the time would probably have a black/red avi. That doesn't mean all black/red avi's are emo though. Items mean about the same thing to me as a screen name, they help point me in the direction of what type a person I'm dealing with. However just because someone has or doesn't have items isn't going to affect the way I treat them.
Is it right to treat people nicer/crueler simply because of their avatar?
No! I have met so many rude people with nice things and so many nice people with very little. One way or the other it's the person that counts.
How about typing? Are you nicer/crueler to a person with incorrect grammar or spelling?
I have to admit I'm bad about judging people by typing simply because if it takes me three minutes to read a sentence then I begin to lose my patience. However if I can tell they're making an effort to type nicely then I don't really care. >.>
Why can't people just get over their ego and lighten up?
I don't know and I wish I did. :3

For me, online... I don't care if your avatar is nude, cluttered, or what. I don't care if your an oldbie, a newbie, a mod or whatever you are... I'm going to treat you the same. Because I think the whole "I am more important than you because I have more items, or because I have more power in the forums" thing is BS... So everyone is equal in my eyes, and get the same treatment.

I find it uber annoying when people are just nice to others because of their avatar. You know they just want gold. I don't think it matters, personally. Some people just post more, or some have just been around longer.. No reason for having more gold makes you superior.

 You know, it's not much fun to always be called mean just for being an oldbie. I don't happen to think I am. I don't flame, I don't tell off new members, I try my best to be fair and helpful, and I run a charity when I have time to do so.
Items, age, time spent on s site.. these things don't make a person. Personality makes a person. judging someone for being old or new, rich or poor.. it's not nice either way, IMHO.
