No matter how sick he was, he always smiled. A blissful smile that covered up any agony that his body felt. He didn't want his grandchildren to see him in pain. So when they came to visit, he sat up in his recliner looking as awake and pleasant as he could. Though his frail frame and tired eyes said something else.
He was also in agony emotionally. His only grandson, the one he had hoped for all along, had been taken away from him. He'd never get to see the small boy because of his mother's grudge with them. He'd never get to see the one who would carry on his family name grow up.
As time passed, his cancer began to spread through his body causing him even more grief and pain where it was torture for him to live.

Memorial Day Weekend. It was halfway over. At 4 AM he was rushed to the hospital after 3 days straight of pain. He didn't stand, he didn't eat, he just cried laying helpless in pain. At 6 AM, he was announced dead. His wife and daughter sent into a state of shock and grief. His grandchildren were told later that morning and they sobbed from the news. Their only grandfather was gone in a flash. The little boy, his grandson, will never know his grandfather.
That night, as the fireworks shined brilliantly in the sky. His loved ones couldn't do anything, but stand outside and watch as they thought of how much lonelier the holidays would be without him. And how they would remember him on Memorial Day Weekend.

I love you grandpa.... May 27, 2007. 6 AM. Died of bone and prostate cancer with a broken heart. Rest in peace.
