I like to know what you people think is the best anti-virus program. Because i am going to need a new anti-virus program when my free subscription to Norton expires. If possible please tell me one of the best free anti-virus programs. (My dad is bit of a cheapskate. ^^; )
Please and thank you for your time.

If you're looking for free, then I find the AVG anti-virus software is best. It updates daily, scans daily and is very easy to use and understand.
I use it all the time and people I know who are very good with computers use it and besides for one of them who has trouble with their crappy video card their computer runs perfectly.
Here's the link for you to check it out yourself.

I second AVG Free.
Keep in mind though, it sometimes interferes with certain high-ish end games, say, Age of Mythology, and makes 'em reaaaal sloooow. It's not much of a problem though, cause you can just turn it off when you're playing. You need to remember to turn it back on, though!
If some time later you can spend some money, I would actually recommend Trend Micro's PC-Cillin. It's often up-to-date and all that good stuff. Of course, as with most(all, I think) non-free virus programs, you have to shell out money once a year. D:

AVG free is pretty good, and is what I'm currently using on my PC. However, as someone who works on PCs for a living, I highly recommend Norton 360(so long as you have XP or Vista). I would be running that if I wasn't clinging to 2000 Pro until it goes legacy in January XD. I wouldn't recommend PC Cillin as I've had quite a few pcs brought to me at work with some massive security isssues including various different types of viruses(a lot of them rootkits... teh ebil >.<) that it never even picks up on.
Norton 360 has a fantastic anti-rootkit set up, and the only one out there better than it is MacAfee, but everything else in Macafee sucks big time >.<. If you think about getting Norton 360, go to staples. Because you have an older version of norton, you get a 40 dollar rebate, which cuts the overall price in half. Also, if you're willing to take your pc in for the PC tuneup special they're running, that can cut the price down by another 40 bucks, pretty much meaning you spend 10 bucks to get them to tuneup your PC and get the program for free. :D

That's interesting! When I worked on PCs half a year ago, it was Norton that would often miss virii and/or corrupt the PC itself. Hmm.. if I recall correctly, one of their updates had a nasty bug in it that screwed up their customers' PCs, and they refused to fix it for a very long time. We recommended PC Cillin instead. After I got tired of dealing with Zone Alarm, I just bought that, along with their firewall, and I've had very few problems(and those could probably be fixed if I just stopped being lazy and reinstalled it. I think I messed it up earlier when I accidentally screwed up my Windows installation...) Anyway, I like it. On the other hand, my father(who repairs computers for a living) likes McAfee a lot, which I really hate. XD So it's hard to say "this one is the best" because often different people like a different one of the big three paid-for programs.

Yeah :) They came a long long way with 360. I used to HATE Norton. Figure its a bad sign when they have to make a tool that allows you to remove it from your pc instead of just uninstalling it, lol. I was quite impressed with 360 when I've worked with it. Too bad they didn't make it 200 compatible *sigh*

AVG's pretty good. It's caught everything that's been on my computer so far. For Spyware I'd get ad-aware. If you want to pay then Norton 360, as mentioned is pretty good.

i think AVG is the best. I've seen other people using other programs, and they've been having problems with their computer because of it. so far, I havent encountered anything wrong with AVG. I used to try other programs too, and they sucked..

I used AVG before, and it worked okay, but then it wasn't. I didn't really understand what happened but we never used AVG again. I use NOD 32 now, I don't know if it's free though. We just had it installed by someone who works under my mom.

Sandra, i'd suggest buying(or getting your Dad to buy..)one year's subscription to Norton, send off for the disk, don't download it, here's why..
My Norton subscription has just run out, on the advice of a friend, instead of coughing up £40 or so to update it, i simply uninstalled it.
On re-installation it asked me for the product key which i'd thankfully written down the previous year, and now it's happily protecting my pc again...
FOR FREE!
and it's updating aswell..so i'm fully protected at no extra cost to myself..and i should be able to continue but the uninstall/re-install program indefinitely..the friend who told me about this has followed this practice for the past 3 years with no ill effects and full updates all the time :)
anyone who has a Norton disk take full advantage of this!

Norton is annoying. I had it on my old computer and still wound up with a load of viruses.
My laptop came with PC-cillin and I will be replacing it as soon as my free 2 years runs out. Nothing wrong with it, but I like McAffee better.

McAfee works okay, but once its subscription runs out, blam, constant, constant popup reminders to renew it, and if not that, to update it. Blargh, how it annoys my soul. D8 But not nearly as much as Norton, which pretty much takes over your whole computer. On the whole, I've been on the net so long I avoid most all viruses except for the standard spyware, which Spybot deftly destroys without fail. <3 But for main virus scanning McAfee's my apathetic choice.
