Which do y'all like better? D: Personally I loved the movie. I'm a big Miyazaki fan, he's like my idol D:, so when it came out in theaters in my home town I HAD to see it~ :3

I loved it so much that even though I don't like to read I went and bought the book and read it.

While the book had more characters and went more into detail, the movie I guess made a bigger impact on me.

It's opening was better and it's ending was a lot better in my opinion~


What do y'all think? D:

I'm currently reading the sequel: Castle in the Air, and I'm not tooo impressed with it =3= it's okay but meh. :/

i watch the movie and i think it was kind of cute.
thought some part of it was like omg and it not that great but i think it really good though it not in my top list or my favorite list

It's funny that I should see this topic, since I watched the movie at a friend's house just yesterday. I thought that it was pretty cute, but nothing spetacular to rave about for hours on. I didn't even know that there was a manga version of it. I don't think I'll read it, the movie was confusing to keep up and stuff.

And also, the "house" didn't look like a castle to me until the very end of the movie.

i saw the movie first because i love Miyazaki alot !
then i thought to read the book (and was shocked it was actually written by some british author :? (Dianna Wynne Jones whom i now LOVE much )
but i think that the book is different enough - Jones and Miazaki basically took the same skeletal parts but each created something great....

but if i have to pick i'd say i loved the book more not neccessarily a diss at the movie i just know that i love other Miyazaki movies better so... :)

I absolutely adore Miyazaki's work, but Howl's Moving Castle wasn't one of my favorites. I've only read Jones' other Chrestomanci series which was very good but also not exactly a favorite.
From what I understand, Miyazaki's interpretation was different than the book. I loved the visuals of the movie though and the concept, it just didn't capture my interest as much as say mononoke hime.

It continues on? woah i knew that in the book that Sophie and Howl have a baby but i dident know it still carried on.

anyways i say movie because

1) i have only seen the movie

2) i always prefer tv/movies over books anyway, its the same with manga and anime, i mostly prefer the anime (unless the anime is rubbish of course.)

I've read both books by Diana Wynn Jones...(did I speel the name right? XD) and they were wonderful. I'm a pretty big fantasy fan though...I should really see the movie, because Miyazaki is awesome...

for a sequel its a wierd one but still pretty amusing. you don't really meet Sophie and Howl until later - well its kinda complicated lol

I haven't read the book but I did like the movie a lot.

I loved both versions very much, but the book will always be my favourite because of the atmosphere it carried.
While I loved the wonderful visuals and storytelling of Miyazaki, I couldn't help but miss some of the warm humor and bickering between the characters potrayed in the book by Wynne Jones. It made the characters feel more like real persons to me instead of fairy tale characters to me and that helped me connect to them more.
It's two very different versions of one story and I think they could both be enjoyed on their own and as compliments to each others.

The book felt magical to me ~ very compelling and warm. While I loved the movie, the book seemed more real to me. I saw it the day it came out.

Kind of random but after re-watching the movie today i realized i do love the movie fro the english cast- i mean Billy Crystal- personally when i first watched it i was like wtf?! lol

but after thinking u guys were right the book really made the characters more real, but isn't that the case usually for books?

Tsubasa Rose: That's true, because in a book, the author usually have a lot more space to expand on characters and also can let you get into their heads in another way than a movie director can.
If it's a book, you can describe very intimate feelings without having to make it too obvious (this depends on the authour, of course) but with a movie, you often have to show it to the audience and it becomes more difficult because a lot of different emotions can take on very different expressions. One of the reasons why music and sound is so important in movies, I think.

On a more random note, I do love both versions of the cast (Japanese and English). They were different but still very good in their own ways.
My only wish would be that they would have let Sophie cry out "confound it!" at least once in the English version of the movie since it seems to be one of her favourite expressions in the book. XD

I havent read the book, but I realy liked the movie ^^ Very well done,
I like the character Howl itself, specialy when his hair got messed up XD

As for now I've only watched the movie. Twice. I got a bit obsessed now, I like it so much that I think I'm SO going to watch it many more times. X3

Haven't read the book yet, but I'm going to as soon as I find it.

...If I ever have a red cat, I'm going to call it Calcipher. XD

  I mean, it looked and sounded great, and it had all the weird little doodads I like so much, but the plot? I had no idea where they were going with it. It started out really slow, which I don't mind, but it all went by way too fast towards the end. The plot, the character's motivations-- it all seemed so... random. I mean, Spirited Away was pretty random too, but in a good way.
  
  Especially the very end. When was it mentioned that a prince was missing? And that that was the reason for the war? And him just showing up all of a sudden is going to end it? O_o
  
  And the romance was far too gooey for my tastes; a lot different than in Miyazaki's other films, I think.
  
  It seems the only people who didn't like the movie were people who read the book and didn't like the changes. I haven't read the book. It just didn't live up to the standards of Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc. for me. >_<

even though i love the movie i agree with you on the faults i know that if i hadn't read the book i wouldn't like the movie as much.

oh adn in the very begining its mentioned that the war was starte becuase one kingdom thought that the other had kidnapped the prince or something like that- so by him showing up it seemilgy ends the point of the war - it was briefly mentioned i just know becuase i read the book (once again)

honestly if u have time i think u might want to try the book- its not so vague as the movie

but yeah i agree its not my favorite Miyazaki

  I've seen the movie, and I refused to reply in this thread until I read the book. I read it today, in one sitting. Goodness gracious, the changes, the changes. I'm not sure which I like better, honestly. Both stories were quite amazing, even though the book had a few more characters than normal, and it was a bit more morbid, in my opinion anyways. What with the whole taking apart of bodies and... yeah. Dx
  
  The movie had more of an airy feel to it, I believe. The Wizard Howl was vain in a funny way, and Sophie's arguments with him were rather hilarious. In the book, I daresay I found Howl a tad morbid. Just a tad. And... the guitar? xD So random.

i've never read the book, but the movie was beautiful. mainly because i'm major into miyazaki. he used less than 10% CG in it. the hand drawn landscapes are really amazing. the CG enhances it just enough, without going overboard (a problem thats been getting worse in recent years).
i find with movies like this, i dont need to pay much attention to the storyline; just watch...

I have never read the book to be honest. I love Miyazaki and his style, his movies have been favorites of mine for so long now. So when I had seen that this movie had been released I had to see it. The movie itself is just amazingly well done in my oppinion. And the storyline was fantastic. Is the book really that different from the movie though? If so I'd love to read it, because it is always possible that it is better than the movie although that may be hard to accept for me. <33

I saw 2 Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke...

I didnt even know that there was a book..but i loved the movie so much..and i love the music too..i love Joe Hisaishi as a composer...but now that i know there is a book series i will definitely go out and buy and read it..did you find it in the fantasy section? or is it a manga?
