  • When working on an art piece, how likely are you to quit? Either by boredom or you don't think it's going the way you want it to?

    The number one stage of drawing that I quit a lot is the sketching. I have a great idea or I'm just planning...and then I'll scrap it because an eye looks funny or something. XD

    CGing is the second stage I'm likely to stop. I just don't have enough time to sit down and work on one from start to beginning. And since it takes me so long to do one, often, I have many CGs at different levels of completion going nowhere. D:

    I think it's because I'm a perfectionist and I get bored easily. >_<;;

    You?

You sound like me. XD

I can have this really grand picture in mind that I really want to do, and, usually:

A) The sketch goes wrong
B) I can't draw out one simple thing
C) I get bored of it after awhile, and start on something eles
D) I begin to realise the picture would look much better in Water color, so I go out and end up buying water color papaer... And start all over again. -_-;;;

But, sometimes it's becuase inking can be a pain. I love inking in pictures, but, sometimes I'm afraid that I'll mess up, and then the whole picture will get ruined. That hasn't happened in a good while, though, since I've started trying to ink using a Tablet instead of a regular pen.

I think it's mostly a matter of interest and how motivated you are in finishing an image.

I'm pretty sure many artists have stopped a picture either all together, or put it down and come back to it later, despite how long it's been since they've touched it. I think you just need to think it out and give it time then come back to it. I've done it before, and I've finished alot of pictures that way. I, myself, am a perfectionist and I usually drop the bomb if I don't like a picture, but I can't keep myself from finishing it either. So, drag yourself to finishing your pictures. Shouldn't be that hard, and nor should it hurt you to try. =)

  • Depends on what kind of art it is that I'm doing. If I'm drawing for myself, just to improve, I'll scribble until I drop, regardless of the quality. If I work on a commission, I first do a bit of warming up, getting everything in gear and then start on the piece. Needless to say, quiting isn't an option concerning commissions.

    I only give up if I have a bad (drawing) day or get angry and frustrated by the things I draw, regardless of the quality. I lose interest a lot, but always pick up the thread after a while, especially with CG.

I'm not very likely to just throw away a drawing idea. If I can't sketch it properly at the moment, I just save the idea to try again later. xD I have far too many cool ideas to just toss them.

If I'm CGing something, I usually just do bits of it at a time, a few hours a day. Sometimes I finish all in one sitting, though. @[email protected] I give myself headaches that way. To keep me from getting bored with a CG, I usually alternate work on different parts. xD A little hair, a little skin.

i have developed the habit of finishing something the same day i start it unless there's a super emergency and i have to stop.
i can't stop something and come back to it days/weeks/months later. i don't feel the same way about a piece once i'm hyped up doing it and after i've cooled down and let it sit for a while.
as far as quiting, i don't think i've ever done that. i just start over, but the general idea stays the same with a fresh canvas so i can clear my thoughts a little.

  • @linkfreak131: Yeah...you sound a lot like me. ^^;
    I used to freak out at the thought of messing up while inking by hand. But it's so much easier since I have, in my perception, more control compared to doing it with a tablet.

    @Florentine: Agreed. If it's a commission, it'll get done some way or another ASAP. XD

    @Magaly: I think I need to do that. Pieces that I finish in one day/sitting, I'm more satisfied with.

As do I. Lol.
I am quite the perfectionist as well.

I could work on a sketch for days. It could be due for a big commish, and I only have to finish this ooone little sketch.
And I"ll tear it up and throw it away, starting over again.

Unfortunately, that sometimes gets me in trouble. Gaah I'm so silly.

I stop early on.

If I don't like the first line I drew, I could abandon the pic altogether.
However, once I'm past the first shade layer of CGing, there's no turning back.
I have forgotten about CGs only to rework the lineart and start the CGing again though.

I'm not really a perfectionist, and in most cases I can finish a picture. Except for when two things happen.

1) Stray marker marks on parts of my picture that are supposed to be lighter then the color that marked it.
2) If I spill water on it.

Those two things make me quite automatically. I won't even try to fix it. Those two things make me so upset and emotional that it's not even funny.

My final project for this year in art, I did both of those things and started crying. XD I was working late on it already, and then I spilled water on it, and marked DARK BROWN on a light yellow spot. I thought I was going to have a heart attack.

  • I just realized another time when I WILL quit a piece.

    If it's a CG...if I fail to save it...and the file gets corrupted or the program crashes...I give up. It's happening a lot...I can't help but wonder if it's the program or my computer...:<

XD I usually quit when I just feel lazy, which is entirely my fault. This usually happens when I'm planning an epic pic with like tons of details, so I'm like 'ughhh' then leave it then it dies. I think the best way to prevent this is to have a truly awesome pic in your head then you'll feel compelled to finish the pic cos you can just see the wonderful thing in your head *_*

OMG so true!! Unless I lose only a little, I can hardly ever bring myself to go back and finish it! It just feels like....such a large chunk of my soul was ripped from me...T___T;;;

Otherwise, I normally finish most pictures I start. I might end up massively simplifying them and not sticking with my original plans! But I'll "finish" it.

laziness is definitely the biggest factor... tho it hasn't really caused me to quit a commission for good.

other factors would be if i can't seem to get the sketch to look correct. or if i started CGing, i noticed that my CG skills (the little that i have) somehow just suddenly go down the drain... and i am usually the most particular about if the linear art was one of my best pieces. because when my linear art (which usually sux) somehow turned out really good, i get really discouraged to color it because i feel like i butchered the art at the end. T_T

That's about my problem... perfectionism. I scrap things because one little detail is off or I just can't hold the image in my head long eough to get it drawn out. >.<;

Also I just get tired and want to gt it done and end up hurrying and messing it up. CGing is nutorious for that with me. ^^;

I usually get bored when I draw, because I tend to erase a lot and re-draw it. Eventually I get back to the drawing, but it ends up way different from what I first pictured.
There are a lot of pictures I have that I still haven't finished..

sketching is the same for me, i enjoy it a lot (or rather it doesn't take any effort since you can just scribble all you want XD), but i'm likely to stop when i start inking (my most hated part of drawing probably XD;;; which is why i've developed a style where i don't need to ink). coloring usually goes by smoothly, unless the lineart is very detailed, in which case i quickly lose interest lmao.

I usually get a comission done and then forget to color it. I also am a sketch page jumper, Whenever I have a sketch that isn't very good I flip to a clean page and end up wasting lots of sketch papare.

Once I get the sketch done and start cleaning it up I know if Im going to scrap it or not.
Ill pratically never stop while CGing, as by then Ill already have put too much effort into it, and chances are, I could fix it in the CGing stages.

Then again, I also tend to be uber stubborn. And I spend A LOT of time editing/fixing picture while working on them. Im persistant ^^;

Most of the time I just stop because I get bored or another idea pops into my head that I want to draw.

Or if I can't draw something right, I get angry and just stop.

I try to finish most of my art, but uhh...yeah, I end up stopping half way with everything. x3

I think almost every artist is a perfectionist because they have something in their mind that they want to portray perfectly or as close as possible.
I've come to accept that I haven't had that skill. I'm not sure if I ever will but I keep trying. Normally if I draw a picture from my mind, I kind of do it but it turns out differently in the end but I'm pretty satisfied with it, but...

In the very beginning stages, the sketch usually drives me nuts if I'm not getting it the way I want it to. So yea, that's normally when I give up lol
Coloring, normally I go all out or I don't, if it's traditional media. With CG, it's different styles and different levels of completion aswell

I have a short attention span with my art >w<
When I start something big like a fullbody CG, I usually stop when I'm halfway coloring.[I get bored if I take a break lol]

It just depends on how I'm feeling or how big the picture is. x]

If a sketch takes longer than a few hours I start to get dis-interested. If by some miracle I do have an interest, it fades real quick when I start to cg it.
Wooo to procrastination and boredom > x<
