Right, so I recently started on getting my license.
Thing is, I panic when I see a car approaching. n.n;;
I confuze the breaks and gas, though when we're standing stil I know exactly what is what... And when we drive I go nuts. I forget how to use the gear box, the directions, even how to turn the steering wheel properly.

I need the license. My boyfriend has a driver now because he can't drive anymore, and neither of us like it very much. Because we can't have a private conversation in the car because he's always there. ^^;;

Good news?
I didn't kill anyone yet.o_0

What do you think of driving a car?
What are your experiences?
Have anything to calm me down?

  • I'm scared I'll be in the same situation you're in.
    I'm terrified of cars myself.
    ><;
    I haven't gotten a liscence yet though.

I hate driving, but it's a necessity for where I live. We have no public transportation.

I don't mind driving in the area where I live because there isn't heavy traffic, but put me smack dab in the middle of a city and I nearly have a panic attack. Luckily my fiance drives in the city, and I take over everywhere else. That way we kind of split the driving time in half.

I procrastinated getting my license. Here you can get your learner's permit when you're 15, a license when you're 16. I didn't bother getting my permit until I was almost seventeen, and my license a couple months after I was eighteen. I did it because my nephew was put into a daycare and he needed to be picked up on days my mother and sister couldn't.

I will say that getting your license does give you a sense of freedom, even if that doesn't make much sense. I kind of like knowing I live on my own now, drive myself where I need to be, pay my own bills, etc., even though some days it still feels weird.

I miss Mom always doing laundry. :b But I won't go off topic. Back to driving.

All I can offer a suggestion for is this:

Practice, practice, practice. I know you said you live in a small area just like me, so I hope you can find a very small area without traffic that you can practice in. Practice backing up, reversing... do everything until you feel more comfortable.

Sometimes cars scare me when they're coming the other way, but I think that's a vision problem. The best way I can explain it is, when they're far away, to me they look like they're coming on MY side of the road, even though they're not.

Just keep with it and you'll get it. Above all, don't give up. Just tell yourself that panicking solves nothing, and that you want to do this for yourself and your boyfriend. <3

Hun, if you confuse the brakes and the gas, and freak out when there's a car coming, then you probably shouldn't be driving - inconvenient to your relationship or not. However, it's very possible that you'll be able to overcome these things with practice - in a safe, open space, gently easing yourself on to more traveled roadways. Good luck.

I also panic a bit when I see another car approaching...
I'm scared they will hit me.
I drove in my boyfriends car once, with him next to me ofcourse XD
it was at night, the street was empty.
It's scary .__. I almost bumped into things, and when I had to
take a turn, I sort of did that too hard, not a gentle turn XD
I'll never do that again though. I'll drive again when I get lessons.

You may want to look into taking some driving lessons if you panic like that -

I've been driving for almost 10 years now (frightening thought) and I don't really ming.

I prefer highway driving because it gets me better gas mileage and is faster - but I can drive just about anywhere. Over the years I've learned to be aggressive when I have to be - like in the City - and that most of the time weaving in and out of traffic really don't get you there much faster and isn't worth the stress.

I never had proper driving lessons - but I didn't seem to have the confusion and panic problems you are having - formal instruction may help ease you into driving.

Personally, I'm too young to be driving just yet, but I can't wait. All my friends and I swear that I'll murder someone my first time out, and I swear that I'll ram the car into a wall, after my parents get me one. Most likely they won't though. xD I want this really expencive car and in my hands, I doubt its gonna last long.

o_o; And you really may want to practice a bit more if you're reacting like that on the road. You may crash, cause a crash, be in a crash, or... You know. Run someone over. Like me maybe. xD

I'm having lessons... Idon't practice outside of them simply because otehr cars don't allow the person next to me to hit the breaks when I don't realize I should be breaking. ><;

I love to drive.
Don't worry Justin, once you get some driving experience under your belt it will seem much easier.
I was surprised that when I drove a stick shift last week, I remembered just how to do it, even though I had been driving nothing but an automatic for over a year. I did have prior experience on a stick shift before though.

I think driving is pleasant. It just takes practice. ^^
I was rather horrid when I started, almost hit a florist's van because I didn't break soon enough.
And, to relax, I just listen to music.

Just, relax and I'm sure you'll get better. <3

If everyone keeps saying it, then you have to relax eventually. Besides, just think, you'll be able to drive Max!

If he's calling while driving, then I'm sure he has some trust in your driving abilities.
My instructor on my second time driving talked on the phone for like, half the time. And I did totally fine. : )

  • Wow, you have a lot of anxiety. You should really look into maybe talking to someone about that. There are therapists out there who can help you ameliorate your panicking at the wheel. Because if you're that distressed while driving, you're risking not only your own safety, but others. And you're really pressed about getting the license.

    I personally don't care much for driving. I always drive at or slightly below the speed limit, and this especially pisses off Texans. And I hate to admit it, but I will get a little road rage if someone cuts me off, because they make such RISKY moves. My least favorite part about driving is going to a four way and there's no light. I hate having to pay attention to when it's my turn and whatnot. I mean, I DO pay really good attention, I just don't like taking turns? Because a lot of people seem to ignore when it's my turn, I'm turning and they're going anyways. X_X;

You can do it. :3 <3

I've found that no matter what it is in life, if I get wound up and nervous, I can't do it. Just try and focus your thoughts the best you can. Just keep remembering why you're doing it.

You'll let us know how it turns out tomorrow?

  • *giggles* I generally have the same problem as you.. I panic when I see on coming traffic.. and I get SO paranoid, to the point that even if there's a median in place I'll drift to the side in ways to give the person more room even if they're on a completely different side of the road... I scare my mom sometimes because sometimes I ended up getting close to going into the ditch or something...

    I'm even more paranoid about driving now because I got in an accident last year and although I no longer have a license because I haven't paid off the $200 on it.. when I had it I was paranoid that it'd happen again and the fact that I don't like driving my mom's car. It's too big and I'm used to the smaller car she had which was also only a four cylinder.

I took driver's education before I got my license.
It helped me out sooo much. It was a great class. I'm glad I took it.

I would have hated being taught by either of my parents. Dx

I don't panic at all. I've been driving for three years+ now. I like driving, but it gets boring after awhile.
