There was a topic about Americans the other day, and everyone was basically saying "Yeah, I hate them. They're stupid" and hating on us and bashing us in more way possible. Now I'm thinking, and have been since I saw it "What's wrong with being American? ._."

I'm American, and I'm not a fan of the country for the politics. Do I hate the citizens like the people in this thread openly admitted to? No. Do I hate a whole country of people, or just dislike them, just because of where they live? No. That's just like racism, only with borders. If you don't realize this, then maybe you should open your eyes.

If you say you dislike us for...:

They're all ignorant/stupid!
There are ignorant people where you live, too, hun. And not all of us are ignorant, that's called a stereotype, and if you base your beliefs off of one, you're more ignorant then you're much more ignorant then most.

They know nothing about MY country!
And, apparently, you know nothing about Americans. Have you ever had someone hate you for it? Would you like being hated for it?

They're all rude!
Once again, stereotype. Furthermore. if you tell me that there are no rude people where you live, then you're a liar.

70% of them don't own a passport, because of that, they're OBVIOUSLY bad people!
For an American, it would take about TEN THOUSAND dollars to go on a nice trip out of country for ONE PERSON. I'm sorry we aren't all as rich as you'd like us to be, but America is made of working-class citizens, we can't afford that kind of money, most of us, at least.

So, I'd like to know why, if you live out of America, have a dislike for us (if you do) why you do and what caused it.

If you do live in America, I'd like to know what your thought are on so many hating us just for the sake that we aren't from their country.

I've noticed the America-hate too. xD

But, in all honesty, some countries are generally nicer, people-wise. For example, I compared the American airport to the Japanese one when I went on a trip, and the differences were shocking. Americans threw our luggage, whereas the Japanese carefully handled them onto the scanner. D: Japanese tried to help us, whereas Americans couldn't be bothered. Ect. Ect. And then comparing Japanese service and strangers to American ones? Ugh...

But see, generally=/=all. Otherwise, all Chinese people lie about their opinions to "save face", and all British people like tea. Whatever. It may be true to many, but not to all. Majority does not rule. If it did, China would have taken over years ago. And there WERE some nice Americans on the airport, and some rude Japanese people. Stereotypes usually are somewhat fact, but NEVER apply to all.

That aside, I hate the American government right now. xD

Sorry for the rambling... ._.;;

I've never quite understood the hatred of Americans, although I realize that some cultures may see us rude or insensitive because they have different customs. Take my own family for an example. My parents are Korean and while I have a Korean heritage, I've been what my friends call 'Americanized'. My parents expect me to respect all adults and use a different, more fancier form of speech when addressing them, whereas here we're known for yelling at our parents. My parents expect modest dress and get upset if my bra strap is showing through my sleeve. Whereas most Americans don't seem to mind being a little less modest and such.

So its actually all how you've been raised and born.

But to say that all Americans are ignorant, stupid, and/or rude is actually quite disrespectful and close-minded. I'm afraid to point out that stupid and rude people are everywhere in the world, and most of your ideas of rude are our ideas of normal.

As for knowing nothing about your country, don't blame the Americans. Blame their education, if anything. Its not like we refuse to learn about your country, but do you honestly expect us to know everything off the top of our hats if its not in our school standards? Educational standards are different everywhere and to blame the students for it is outrageous and idiotic.

And the passports? Like it was said, we can't all afford a passport. But besides that, basically, you're saying that we're bad people because we choose not to travel out of our state? And what if you simply feel comfortable and home and prefer not to travel long distances? Do you want to leave your home behind while you go flying off to visit places overseas? Well, some of you may, but there are others whom rather stay at home. To say that we're bad for that makes as much sense as saying that we're bad for being nosy and traveling around. o_O

And it's not our fault other countries are starving, and there are many AMERICAN organizations to help starving countries, which get lots of donations. Not only that, we aren't the only country that has problems with obesity.

Having different customs is no reason to hate us. ><;;

Muslims have extreme hatred against women, which means that the Muslim countries have a general hate of women, but I don't hate them for that. :?

I know that having different customs is no reason to hate, but I'm just trying to say. That's a reason why some of the people may be looking down at us.

And I doubt that men would last long in my presence if they were telling me I was insignificant for being a woman. O_o; I'd get mad and try to bean them in the crotch.

While I don't hate Muslims for their extreme dislike of women, I certainly don't approve of it and would not accept a Muslim man hating me just because I'm female.

To me, it goes in the same category as religious people who feel they have the right to hate homosexuals because their God tells them too. =/

But you're right; it's how they're raised. I honestly can't blame them, if it's all they ever knew... Even still, I'm not going to say, "OK!" to a Muslim guy who tells me I'm a piece of shit just because I'm not a guy. And they CAN think outside the box...

Same with Americans. We're not as polite as most countries, but does that mean I'm going to be "rude" to a stranger, or accept rudeness from anyone? No. Go beyond what you're told.

Then again, that's just me. My opinion might be different were I a Muslim boy.

First of all for someone to say "I hate all Americans", make's me not care about whatever else they have to say on the matter, if they're going to be ignorant to the fact that not everyone in America is rude, mean, whatever their insult was, then I really couldn't take them seriously at all.

I hate when people bash Americans...

I really get ashamed of being an American.

My ex girlfriend used to always get on my case about America, because she was born in the Ukraine.

  • I'm Russian, and my family has -high- standards for me. :/ My grades are 95's or so, always, and I'm very OCD about my report card.

I live in America, and my public school has so many idiots, sometimes I just want to cry. But, you'll be such a liar if you don't admit that wherever you live, you're not faced with idiots. I'm 'American,' but I hate our government.
And, do you know how -hard- it is to get a Passport here!? I've been here 6 years and I don't have mine yet!

And then they tell us that -we- don't know about -their- country.
Apparently, they don't know about ours, either.

Why would anyone hate America? It's such a great country, i think the best country in the world in fact. No one anywhere enjoy the freedom offered in America. America is the land of opportunity! Anyone can become rich and reach their dreams. This is the blessed land right here, America is wonderful! People just look at the negative side, what about the good side of America? I love this country, i really do. God bless the USA!

I have to disagree with you there.

Many Europeans countries offer just as much freedom as the US, and a lot better laws. Such as the UK, that's a great country as well, and they have great laws, and just as much freedom, if not more.

Well, our government IS worth bashing and hating over at the moment... >.>

But aside from that, yeah. General stereotype bashing is rude and IGNORANT AS ALL HELL. It's not funny. Seriously. It doesn't make you look clever or a being of a higher opinion/status. You just look like a bratty snot-nosed 12 year old with an ego that is the opposite of your IQ. :\

Generalizations are okay. Ignorant ones are not.

But I do find the "OH NOES YOU HAVE NO PASSPORT SO U R EVIL" thing funny. A lot of people fail to realize one little point- America is BIG. Like, a lot of land big. Not like Russia or Canada or such, but still it's sizable. Several European countries can fit easily into the entire state of Texas. It takes me less time to drive across England than it does across the state of Kansas. Yes, this following viewpoint may seem ignorant and snooty, but- with America alone having so much to offer, why is it required to have a passport to other countries?

European nations have quicker and easy access to other European nations. They're all relatively small countries within a reasonable distance from each other. From France I can easily drive to no less than SEVEN countries (Chunnel route to England included). DRIVE. EASY. It's sensible to have a passport when it's easy to just hop across the border to Germany. Or Spain. Or Italy. Or wherever for a weekend getaway.

America has Canada and Mexico. We have to fly or drive a damned long time to get anywhere else. And with my experiences with Canada, it's all "eh, you're up for a few days. Just head on through." With a big country and not-as-viable access to other countries... why is a passport needed? Seriously. Think about it a bit. It's far less hassle to just trundle on over to another state rather than get a passport for overseas travel (which, by the way, is a royal pain to get here. I'm trying to renew mine for a Russia trip and it's been two weeks of drudgery).

And yes, overseas travel here is mad expensive. My family had to save up for YEARS to be able to do a 15-day trip to England. YEARS. Stop taking international travel for granted. Just because it's simple where you live doesn't make it simple everywhere else.

I think its funny that this topic was made and any topic having to defend a country or flaming a countries citizens...

For one if people hate America so bad why are people desperately trying to come here to escape whatever war/problems they have in there own neck of the woods.

If you hate Americans so much as to flame them, then why talk to us/visit our websites etc...

its like me going into a Japanese restaurant and saying I hate the Japanese...

For example, Bosnians took over the old apartment complex I used to live in, they completely moved in and started acting like they own the place, yet for 75% of them AMERICANS tax dollars paid for them to live there and have there cars/clothes/jobs whatever..and they did nothing but bash americans...

Why should we help self centered countries with there problems if they are going to disrespect us...

Is it because we have farms/canneries/vineyards and food that people MADE that others cant afford because of diseases and such and in some situations the stupidity of certain badly ruled areas?

NO! So before someone flames Americans you need to re-access the situation and the people becasue not all of us are mean/ignorant/self-centered and so on and so forth...

  • The whole thing about Americans and passports is very new to me.

I live in the UK but i don't really have anything againts Americans. The whole war thing is a bit dodgey though =/ I only dislike George Bush and his decisions etc etc.

I wish i could visit America because the country seems so beautiful and your houses are so cheap compared to here. And i love the American national anthem. We NEVER use ours and Americans sing it at sport games and holidays don't they?

I love it. It just seems like they're all one big family. Haha.

But yeah, to keep to topic unless anyone has any valid reasons for hating America .. well they shouldn't!

    Hope that made sense.

As long as there is human nature, there will be stereotypes.

I disagree and agree with people who hate Americans. It is wrong to stereotype that many people at once, but then again, based on who represents us, people in other countries are bound to make assumptions.

I don't so much hate americans, but hate what America itself stands for.

Fastfood joints
Lawsuits for the most stupid of things
A decresing number of graduates
A poor schooling system
"american pride"
Power through fear
The shady behind-the-scenes of the government system
Huge racisim issues
Murder
Belief in a system that has only ever cheated it's people
Coruption to the max
The top 3% of America's most wealthy have almost all of the country in their back pockets
The avaliblity of firearms
The media
The EVERYWHERE-EVERYTHING advertising
And many many MANY more.

One of the biggest symbols in America is Lady Liberty. But did you know she was a gift from the French?
Did you know that only 57% of Americans can recite the national anthem while 97% can sing you the "Big Mac" song?

I know this is a very broad statement to make, but from what the world sees, this IS America.

As for how America sees the world:
It is a great idea to take over another country when, if GW Bush was in Hussain's place with the death threats from rebel millitia, I'm sure...no, POSITIVE he would have had them killed too.

I mean, honestly, I can understand if you were an American who hated these FACTS about America, and then being offened by the comments bad against themselves instead of their country. But think about it. Seriously think about it for a minute. Would you rather whip up a healthy salad than gobble down a Big Mac? Would you opt for having a dog as hone secruity, or a gun?

My post speaks for itself of my opinions.

I'm American, as well... But as a whole, I do view most Americans as naive and narrow minded. I'm sure there are many people like that in any country, though. I'm not bashing Americans... I just don't agree with the 'American' mindset.

I've been on multiple trips to other countries, and have had varying experiences with the people residing in them. I could make generalizations about other countries, if I wanted to, just as people do about America. People in France were mostly rude to my mother and I. People in Italy were almost too friendly. I know that's not how the entire country is, but it is the generalization that comes to mind.

Most international opinions of other countries are based on narrow experiences, and stereotypes. It's just how things tend to go. *Shrugs*

Oh, America-bashing... It's a sport in Canada! Which I think is hilarious, considering how totally Americanized (*cough* Stephen Harper *cough*) our culture and some of our western provinces are.

What a lot of people fail to grasp is that most governments are an awful representation of the actual people, and national stereotypes only group a very small amount of people, compared to the rest of it's people.

Oh well. As long as people think Canadians live on Maple Syrup and live in Igloos, people will think all Americans are gun-shooting overweight religious kooks.
