5th grader? Seems pretty young. I remember when I was in the 5th grade.. it seems so long ago, yet only seven years.
When I was 10 I first started going online and playing Warcraft III. It was one of the only games that allowed for online multiplayer gameplay. Now it's hard to find a game that doesn't have access to the internet. The internet was some vast new thing oh-so many years ago, and now we've got 5th graders using the internet straight out of the womb! I wonder what kind of technological life we'll have years from now?

I'm not sure if I consider myself lucky. Haha. I didn't have very many friends in that period of my life, and all I did was play wc3. It probably would have been much better if I went outside and did something, but it's not like those years of life are important anyway.

There are quite a few older people here, too. But I assume that most of them are admins.
I consider 12-14 young. I don't think much people below the age of 12 should be on a computer. They're too young to be exposed to what's on here, and too young to comprehend their safety and security. Nor the workings of the internet and computers.

Why would most of the older people be admins? I'm 20 and i'm not an admin. Though I do agree with Nathuram. All younger kids below 12 should only be allowed to use the computer for school work.

I don't see any real reason for younger kids to be denied Internet access. The sites they visit just have to be restricted and monitored. It's all up to the parent. It's their responsibility to make sure the kid isn't doing anything dangerous and harmful. As long as they are only chatting with real life friends and visiting places like Webkins or Neopets, I don't see the problem.

I agree with Knerd. Neopets and Webkins aren't really chat sites. There are lots of games on the internet that kids can enjoy.

I think it actually matters not of the age, but of the maturity of the child. But considering that something like that is hard to measure, I suppose younger children's internet use should be well-watched until proven otherwise. But then again, 16 year olds have also gotten themselves abducted on the internet, and they're supposed to know better.

yes but 16yr olds should know better of what is allowed to be said ect. on the internet. Then again it depends on how there life style and parents are as well.

It all depends on what the child is taught. Yes, they should know better, but who's actually told them what they can and cannot do? We have all these horror stories about MySpace and chatrooms, but it isn't too often that you see parents or teachers sit down with their kids and tell them exactly what they could be doing wrong. My grandmother, for example: She believe that MySpace is the spawn of Satan. No one on that site could ever possibly be safe. Just by creating an account, you've put yourself down on this list for an abduction. It doesn't matter what your privacy settings are, if you've decided not to post photos, if you only accept friend requests from people you know in real life, you're still doomed. E-mail, on the other hand, she doesn't even give a second thought to. She'll open it up no matter who the sender was. She'll open attachments, talk back with the person, etc. She doesn't understand about cookies or spiders. Even if she's sure never to give out personal information, she just doesn't see the harm in all of it.
More than anything, kids just need to take courses in Internet safety, or have someone explain to them the limits of what they're allowed to safely do. Not everything is common sense when you're that young.
