What is the difference between a university and a college?

Well, where I am, college is treated as a pre-university course which lasts for one to two years depending on the circumstances.
After graduating from high school here, you do not automatically enter college. In fact, you have to apply to enter into one, if not, you're just a high school graduate and that's it.

After the college course, you are free to chose whichever university you would like to attend, depending on your interests, so the time of 'college' is somewhat a testing ground where you can do whatever you want first and see which ones suits you best.
university is where you take up a course in a certain concentrated area.
