Nathans Depression
Generally Speaking, All Narwhales are very similar. They grow to about the same size, eat the same food, play the same games, brush their teeth in the same fashion and enjoy watching football, But Nathan the Narwhale was Different. Nathan wasn’t the same size as his fellow whales, he was much smaller. Nathan didn’t like the same foods; he had more of a taste for higher-classed cuisine. He didn’t play any of their games because he just lacked the natural skills that most other Narwhales possessed, and he most certainly did not brush his teeth the same way; He found the tooth brushes much too hard, and the toothpaste far too strong… But Nathan still liked football.
Although Nathan was a little strange he still had some good friends, and the best of these friends was Sally. Sally the seal was an outgoing girl to say the very least. Often speaking out, she made a spectacle of herself at every opportunity. Of course, this became irritating at times but no one made a problem of it, because although she was quirky and
loud, Sally was never distracting. Just amusing.
Sally and Nathan were best friends, their contrasting personalities and common boredom with their small lives lead then to create many adventures. Growing up came naturally with their new experiences. Of course, they were still children and had a long way to go until becoming adults. Of all the exploration and adventure they have gone through, this; is only one of them.
The wind was strong and cold and on that morning, which made waiting at the bus stop even more unpleasant. Weather like this wasn’t normal for the area. An early winter… Nathan was not pleased by this. He could tell he was going to have a chill all day.
Mr. Barty wasn’t at the bus stop that morning, which was unusual. Mr. Barty was the social teacher at Nathan school and he often took the student bus, his lack of presence on the wooden bench among the waiting teenagers was out of the ordinary. Nathan thought about this for a moment before moving his thoughts to wondering is Sally would be late again. By the schedule, she had a good five minutes before the bus arrived, but she was nowhere in sight, and the bus often came early. Nathan was sure she wouldn’t make it that day.
It was beginning to become late fall, but there was still a good month left of football, and that brought Nathans mood up s notch or two. He enjoyed going to the home games and cheering on his favorite teams; but still he had been feeling a little odd lately. Nathan had begun to grow unaware and unconcerned about most things, almost to the point that he didn’t feel like

doing anything at all. Perhaps the flu was going around? That’s what Sally had suggested over and over again in the weeks before. Maybe she was right, and soon he would be back to his normal self. Even though it should have, this thought didn’t brighten his mood.
Nathan was right about Sally being late; she didn’t arrive until the end of second block. They met up with each other in the hall between gym and home economics. Soon he found out that she had been up late with homework, and by chance ha forgotten to set her alarm, again. Small talk continued until they reached their designated classrooms, Sally had metal work and Nathan was on his way to physical education. Nathan didn’t like Gym, Not because he wasn’t good at it, He was. Well, he was average.
Sally and Nathan both had a free block at about one thirty, so they went for a walk and stopped at the convenience store. As they sat on the curb drinking their slushies Sally began a conversation. At first they spoke about nonchalant things, school, sports, and Mr. Barty’s absence. After awhile, the conversation died down, and following a short silence Sally said:
“I think I know why you’re so… unhappy.”
“Really.” Nathan replied, voice heavy with disbelief.
Sally was a good person, but it was commonly known that she wasn’t the deepest puddle on the playground. Sally grew quiet for a moment, Perhaps she was thinking; and then in a very “matter-of-factly” way she said
“Absolutely. You’re bored.”
All Nathan said was “Huh?”
Sally, using as many words as she could possibly think to say (or so it seemed) explained that when she was younger, she used to get bored. She would become really down and depressed, and that all a person had to do to fix it was find something to do. Something new. On the way back to school they spoke about things he could try out. New clubs, new sports or maybe he could get a girlfriend? Nathan nodded his head, and had nice conversation, but he knew all this stuff wouldn’t work. He didn’t like clubs, he didn’t have time for sports and he couldn’t handle a girlfriend. Nathan agreed with Sally about maybe being bored, but he didn’t think that any of the things she said could help.
The rest of the day flew by, and when he got home the only thing that was on his mind was football. He walked over to the small, old Television and turned it to the channel he knew so well. Sitting in his father’s favorite chair, Nathan didn’t pay much attention to the game. There was a team with red jerseys and a team in all green… but other than that he didn’t notice much else, He didn’t even know who was winning. Nathan was so distracted by what Sally had said earlier that day and thoughts of how he could get some excitement swam through his head. He really did want to fix this, being bored was such a… BORE! And he was tried of being down.
The nest morning Nathan woke up to an air horn above him.
“GET UP SLEEPY!” exclaimed Sally.
(there is one more part after this, and btw, miriai, THANK YOU FOR POSTING SO MUCH! <33)

“Whaa…” Nathan barely mumbled
“Wasn’t that exciting?” A smiling Sally asked.
“What do you think your doing?” He asked.
A simple “You’ll see.” Was her answer.
For the remainder of that day, and many days following Sally dragged Nathan to every event she could find. They volunteered at sporting events, in old people’s homes and at public luncheons. They tried different Clubs also, Fencing, synchronized swimming, advanced mapping and more. Nathan did enjoy all of this, but not because he had found something that excited him, because he got to spend time with Sally.
“How about his one?” Sally wheezed, trying to catch her breath.
“I’m not so big on dieing” Nathan replied, sarcastically.
“So, Cross country running is out? Okay.” Sally conferred as she grabbed Nathans arm and started down the road.
“There has GOT to be more a Narwhale can do around here…” She told herself.
Nathan smiled at her silliness… but inside he felt more hopeless than ever. How would he ever find something that could help him, he didn’t want to loose his best friend, and he could tell she was getting frustrated, maybe not at him but at the fact she couldn’t help. If Sally couldn’t help him, who could? He thought about telling his dad how bad he felt, but that wouldn’t have helped much anyways, Nathans dad was always busy swimming around with all his girlfriends. He would have went to his mother, But she lived far away. So far, that it was like she was from another world, and he didn’t know that world at all. He felt alone, he didn’t want to, but average Narwhales like Nathan; don’t often get what they want.
Nathan spend the next few days at his friend Wallace’s house, Wallace was a Killer whale, He wasn’t as nice as most, but no one could really say he was a “bad kid”. Sally and Wallace were friends too, but they only hung out at school. Just like Nathan, Wallace only had a dad; a therapist would say that was why they were friends, even though that wasn’t the reason at all.
Wallace and Nathan both liked computer games and would play them together, having a really good time. They had quite a few things in common and still had opposite personalities. Wallace would sometimes say mean things to Nathan and Sally, but they knew it was just in his nature, he really was a good friend at heart. Nathan was hurting but Wallace didn’t talk about “feelings” the way Sally did, so for the few days Nathan was at Wallace’s he acted like he was happy, when he didn’t feel content at all. He really liked hanging out with Wallace, but he needed a bit of a break. So, for the first time in almost a week, he called Sally.
Nathan and sally met at the park, it was really luck that they lived so close to each other and could meet in a common area. They hung out a bit, spoke about the same things as always and pretended that there was relevance in their conversations. After an hour or so Sally drifted off, most likely daydreaming about any amount of things. When she drifted back to reality she noticed Nathan’s look, it was unsettled and anxious she decided it was time to talk to him. Taking a deep breath she said;
“Nathan, I don’t know what’s wrong, and I don’t think I can fix it this time, but you know that I am… that ALL your friends are here, and they all care for you, even if YOU don’t care for you. Right?”
Sally sat quietly.
Nathan knew it may be a struggle to find his happiness, but there would always be someone trying to help him, and despite how hard he tried not to, he liked that. Nathan smiled a bit. And for a little while, was really, truly… happy.
