I enjoy writing lots of different things but I love writing scripts for plays the most. The first 1 Act play I wrote won 2nd place in a district competition and was even going to be performed at a local college, but they weren't able to gather enough actors for all the performances so my play was one of the plays that got cut. It absolutely broke my heart. So I have to make sure to win again this year with my new play so I can see it performed! This is more of a skeleton of a script. Of course my finished work will have more lines, directions, and scenes. I just want to know if the concept for it sounds entertaining enough. Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
A Nightmare Called Damien
Scene 1: [ Paige is sitting face down at her desk when Amy, Tasha, and Kacy come over ]
Amy: Hey Paige. What’s wrong?
Kacy: Was it the dream again?
Paige: ( pops head up ) It’s not a dream. It’s a nightmare!
Tasha: Jeez, not this again. Paige, when are you gonna get over that stupid dream?
Paige: ( sarcastically ) Thanks for the concern, Tasha.
Amy: What Tasha means to say is: You’ve been having the same nightmare four nights in a row now. We need to do something about it.
Paige: How?
Kacy: Describe your dream again; see if there’s anything we’ve missed.
Paige: Well, it always starts the same. I’m resting in my room when he appears.
Amy: Who?
Paige: Damien.
Kacy: Your nightmare?
Paige: Yes.
Amy: How does he appear?
Tasha: Like in a clap of sinister thunder as he laughs manically?
Paige: No. From my closet.
Tasha: ( disappointed ) Aw…
Kacy: Your closet?
Paige: Yes. He just steps out of my closet like it’s perfectly normal and greets me.
Amy: And what does this Damien look like again?
Paige: He has long, black hair that he keeps tied back under his top hat. He has stormy eyes and he wears a dark suit.
Tasha: For a nightmare, he dresses pretty sharp.
Paige: I’m not done yet. He also has a cane.
Amy: A cane?
Tasha: ( sarcastically ) How horrifying…
Paige: That doubles as a sword!
Tasha: Now that’s more like it!
Amy: Tasha, please! Go on, Paige.
Paige: Anyways, he greets me in the usual manner: ( as she explains, Damien appears to the side of the stage; as if part of her flash back ) He takes off his top hat with a small bow.
Damien: Hello Miss Paige. How are we this evening?
Paige: He says. And then I ask him who he is.
Damien: My name is Damien…
Paige: He replies as he puts his top hat on. ’Well, what were you doing in my closet?’ I ask him.
Damien: Now now, Paige.
Paige: He tsks.
Damien: Do I ask you about your personal business?
Amy: He seems rather polite.
Kacy: He seems nice.
Tasha: He sure doesn’t seem like a nightmare.
Paige: I’m not finished yet!
Amy/Kacy: Sorry.
Tasha: Whatever.
Paige: Anyways, I’m standing by this point in great confusion. ‘What are you doing here?’
Damien: Oh, well I’m here to kill you of course.
Paige: ‘Kill me!’ I repeat in shock.
Damien: Yes, kill you.
Paige: He replies as he reveals his cane actually doubles as a sword.
Damien: Now, make this easy for both of us and not run around screaming.
Kacy: So what did you do?
Paige: Run around screaming…
Tasha: Of course.
Amy: But Paige, didn’t you listen to what I told you the other day? Damien is nothing more than a thought inside your mind. He can’t hurt you.
Paige: I know, Amy. I even told Damien that.
Amy: Well, what happened after you told him that.
Paige: He just yawned.
Damien: (yawns) Are you quite finished?
Paige: He asked before I nodded…Then he tried to kill me again. And dream or no dream; when someone’s chasing after you with a sword, you run and scream!
Tasha: Well, what about what I told you?
Paige: You mean what you said about fighting back?
Tasha: Yes!
Paige: He’s way better with a sword than me…
Tasha: But it’s your dream!
Paige: Tell him that!
Kacy: Have you tried talking with him?
Paige: Kacy, haven’t you been listening? That’s pretty much all I’ve been doing before he chases me around, trying to cut off my head or something.
Kacy: No. You’ve just been talking at him. There’s a difference between talking at someone and talking with someone.
Paige: Yeah, I guess so.
Kacy: Just give it a try. What the worst that could happen?
Scene 2: [ Paige is resting in her bed, just like she described when Damien comes on stage ]
Damien: Hello Miss Paige. How are we this evening?
Paige: ( thinks about what Kacy had said ) ….I’m fine. How are you doing, Damien?
Damien: ( a bit surprised ) Oh! I’m doing well, I suppose.
Paige: That’s good to hear…Damien? Can ask you something?
Damien: I don’t see why not.
Paige: Why do you want to kill me?
Damien: I…don’t really want to kill you.
Paige: Then why do you keep trying to?
Damien: I’m a nightmare. It’s my job to scare you, of course.
Paige: But you seem too nice to be a nightmare. If you don’t count the whole trying to kill me…thing…
Damien: Well, that’s because I don’t really want to be a nightmare. I mean, it’s fun and all to scare a couple rude and mean kids, but I absolutely despise scaring nice kids, like you.
Paige: Really? Then why are you a nightmare?
Damien: Family business, I’m afraid. I still want to be part of the dream business, just not as a nightmare
Paige: What would you rather be?
Damien: I haven’t quite decided yet. There’s not many…wait? What’s with the sudden interest in my life?
Paige: Um, curiosity?
Damien: You’re just trying to get me out of scaring you!
Paige: Well, yeah. And it worked, didn’t it?
Damien: ( pulls out sword and points it at Paige ) You tell me.
Paige: ….Yep, it worked. Since I know you don’t actually want to kill me, I know you won’t hurt me.
Damien: ( puts sword away ) No! You have to be scared! If you’re not scared, then I’m out of the job. I may not like my job, but it’s all I have.
Paige: Well, that would be a problem. I know! What if you can find someone else to scare?
Damien: On such short notice?
Paige: What if I had someone in mind?
Damien: I’m listening.
Scene 3: [ The next day at school, Tasha is sitting face down at her desk when Paige comes over ]
Paige: Hey Tasha. What’s wrong?
Tasha: ( lifts her head slowly ) …Damien says ‘hi.’

Wow, you think that was long? That takes up about 2-3 pages at most.
Most 1 Act plays can run past 30 pages.
And next time, could you give a comment that proved you actually read it instead of just glancing at it and posting for gold.

Wow! I can see why your play won, even though it was in second place. I could really image what's going on, how the actors would move around in the play.
The storyline is really interesting. It seems like a similar play I've seen at school, but that was such a long time ago, I can't remember what the play was about. But when I read the part "sitting face down at her desk", it reminded me of that play long ago.
Anyway, great story! It would have been a really interesting play to do, if only there would be enough people to play the parts. How many characters are there?
Ah! I'm talking too much. Can't wait to read the next parts, if you're planning to post them. =)

Well, this wasn't the play that won. This is a new play. But I'm glad you think that this could win! See, this is kinda a summery of the play I'm working on. I'm gonna develop this into about 7 different scenes that take place in two different locations. It's still gonna have the same number of characters that it does now.
