I called my dad today, and we had a pretty nice chat up until he told me about the "crazy stuff" my sister was posting online. Me, I figured this was either about my sister being a lesbian (which my dad says he doesn't mind, but then he got upset by her mentioning she was lesbian on her myspace ) or about badmouthing a family member, so I just figured "well, here we go again".

Then he told me he'd stumbled across a picture of my sister wearing a bra as an eye patch.

I spent the rest of the phone call trying to reassure him that she was not crazy, but just being silly at the time. But I don't think I convinced him.

Is it only my family, or does the internet just bring a whole new level of weirdness to family affairs?

Why did he get upset that she mentioned she was a lesbian on her myspace?

The internet certainly does bring out ... the best and most amusing things in people.

I think it's just a generational gap, he doesn't really get that on social sites like myspace it's common for people to mention their sexuality somewhere. He seemed to think she was flaunting the fact that she's a lesbian. It was like "no, dad...most of the straight people mention they're straight, too."

I'm stalking you charis. No, I saw the topic and it was by you, so I figured I'd read it.

All I have to say is I'm glad my parents don't know where to find me online. I don't use my real name or anything, and I just...yeah. XD

That's kind of messed up, it's just an eyepatch. Er, a bra. Why does that amuse me? XD

This is why I never post anything about myself in real life over the internet. :) I mean, I'm pretty much old enough to do whatever the hell I want but not that long ago, my mother was telling me that she found Livejournal in the history on her computer. It seemed that my dad was trying to plug my real name into LJ searches to find my Livejournal. I don't know why he'd do that, considering how old I am now for one thing... I'm over 21.

Your sister sounds like a weirdo though. XDDDD

Ah, that's true.
My mom is kind of like that. She thinks I talk to dirty old men on the internet, and give out my address.

As far as I know, my sister didn't use her name on the site. He found it because her or her girlfriend's screen name was stored in the auto-complete form, and it was actually the girlfriend's site. (Although he wasn't sure which girlfriend it was. If it was her former girlfriend, it would add a new level of oddity, because he said the bra looked like an A-cup...and that's neither my sister's or the former girlfriend's.)

The picture sounds hilarious to me, although I can't find it since he didn't say what exactly the screenname was. Still...it sounds pretty funny.

I don't use my real name either. Makes things much simpler.

My sister is a weirdo. :D But her antics are one of the reason she's fun to hang out with.

Hm...I gotta admit, I've sometimes googled people's names myself. Not to find personal journals, but just out of curiosity, like to see if they've ever been in the news.

It pissed me off pretty bad. My mom thought it was obnoxious of him to try and find it.

Aren't I a little old to have "big brother" looking over my shoulder all of the sudden? And I'm certainly not stupid enough to ever use my real life information in connection with anything I post over the internet for the exact reason that I don't want people in real life trying to harass me over here. x_X

I can understand.

Yeah, I'd think so. I know my mom would do the same thing, even if I was 30.
A lot of people are, though. Because of that, most parents just assume that their kids (and young adults) are going to give out their personal information.

The internet hasn't affected my family, though I do post a lot of weird stuff.
I think if my mom or dad read/saw some of the things I post they would probably be upset, but they would never say anything, for one thing, I'm grown, so it's just not their place anymore, and they both realize that. Two, it would just be incredibly uncomfortable for all of us. And nobody wants that.

I don't think its just family affairs, but affairs with everyone as well. You don't know when someone you know is reading something you are posting online or visa versa.

Yeah, that's true. It's why I try to keep things vague in my LJ sometimes--I don't mind my LJ friends knowing where I am, I mind other people in real life finding the journal by searching.

I mention nothing about computer ever and don't let my parents know when or how much I use the computer XD I find it helps keep them off my trails. Mostly, I don't do any thing that would warrant any kind of real reciprocation but I find that they just don't understand . A good example is my pixel art. I once made the mistake long ago of letting my stepfather see a piece of my artwork but he didn't know that I had actually drawn it and called it "gay anime trash" so from that point on I made sure he never got the chance to see my art ever again. Needless to say, I still hold a bit of a grudge ^^;;

My mom once told me that she googled my name but only my school's website came up saying that I had won an award for our literary magazine and had been published. I never use my real name, ever. I don't even think any one knows my last name that I don't know in person. I just go by my pseudonym which is surprisingly common any way so it's pretty hard to find me XD

I try and be very careful by always clearing my cache and all my cookies with Ccleaner. It's probably the most useful program I've ever used and it's free XD

The only thing my parents complain about, internetwise, is how long I am on the computer. I do my best not to put my name anywhere online because that's just stupid.

My parents think that I give out my address and other personal information to creepy old pedos on the internet.

They trust me though, and don't try to like, track me down or anything.

I think everyone should learn he intarwebs before they're allowed to speak of it and/or talk on it. I mean, seriously. My mother and sister both found my unused myspace and youtube account. They've called me crazy or sick because I was being silly numerous times. xD

I just Googled my real name for kicks. Apparently, there are quite a few people with my name. Like famous academic type people. I'm pretty surprised. XD

But I didn't expect to find anything relating to me anyway. I'd probably be really horrified if I did though.
