My family doesn't really go online. I'm
the only Internet nerd of the family. :'D
My sis has a myspace but that's about it.

I tend to use only my first name and a few personal details online. I guess I am more trusting then most but I have never gotten in trouble because I never give out enough information to get me in trouble. If people want to stalk me, they will always find away and even I get stalked in real life more times then online. In fact some guy is slightly stalking me and it is freaky but not enough to call the cops.

Anyway I do wacky things online all the time and have photos of me doing fun stuff and nothing to out there really. The internet is the only place I don't get judged badly and if I do, they really do not know me to really even be judging me. I am never offended or threaten online and I enjoy it.

I think most parents of younger children or even older children fear for their safety and with the internet the chances of being stalked online is higher to most parents then in real life. What people don't understand is the internet is a gate way to real life. A lot of people act fake but a good majority of real and act real. There is only a handful out of pretty much everyone that uses internet that are criminals. Parents of young children just have to be careful and monitor children's activities online. It is better to watch out for them but do not judge them for what they do online (unless it is illegal or just plain bad).

I don't think he's really worried about my sister getting stalked...she's 22 this month.

He's just weirded out by the bra.

Internet drama never touched me.

However it is something I spend too much time on I think.

Oh well, it's fun :']

That's...amazingly dumb of both of them. @[email protected] I mean, I'm assuming the friend's sister is exaggerating about wanting to kill her family, but that's still a bit of a dumb thing to say if acquaintances can find it.

You want to know something, charis?

A few weeks ago, on myspace, Princess posted a blog on myspace, and her parents read her blogs on myspace. She got bitched out for something she said, and has realized that the online name she uses is well known by her parents. Can't figure out why she hasn't changed her name on gaia, because they could find that too...where she admits to being transsexual.

But...she had to get a new myspace and everything, apart from what she'd been using.

And her LJ went friends only at one point, too, because her dad had been reading it. :/

She's an adult, so I think it's ridiculous. But she had legitimate reason for her blog content, she never should have been chewed out for it.

A few years ago when Xanga was big at my school, there would be all this drama between my brothers and a girlslut they both dated named Jessie. And it was all on xanga and at school and caused all sorts of havoc at home and everywhere.

I don't put my drama on facebook. I'm already embarrassed enought that I was talked into getting one. >_>;;

My parents don't care what I do on my own computer, its just on their computer they get all snoopy about. But my mom sucks at using computers so I never get afraid of anything. She asks me to help with everything.

XD

Thats the advantage of the generation gap.

She left either her girlfriend's or her own screenname in the auto-comlete form so when he clicked to start typing a search term it appeared. It's a nonsensical screenname so he clicked it out of curiosity, it led to the girlfriend's site, he saw the picture.

So he says.

...ouch. Her parents seem like jerks. Has she considered changing the gaia name? Because you're right, that's easy to find too--I just googled my username and it leads straight to the profile.

I had a problem with my half sister using my blog against me. Even though shes older she has always tried to "dig up dirt" on me, and apread nasty rumors to my family. Finally I had enough and switched my blog to friends only. I refuse to even speak to her now, and my life has been wonderfully drama free.

I definitively have to say I believe most of this behavior and irrational thought processes that parents are having now a days is directly related to a new generational gap developed/developing.

Technology has allowed individuals to express their opinions and views online in a way that only a decade or so ago was unheard of in social use. Therefore parents who were raised in a social situation of keeping a consistent eye on their children when at home have realized they are able to do the same thing constantly day round with technology. Unfortunately this has also lead to invasion of privacy of a ever more emotionally open youth to the point of creating large rifts in the family structure. I liken it to the modern day 60s-70s hippie subculture, the drugs have been replaced by the internet.

I've also found that there is a simple solution to this issue as well, if your parents aren't completely unreasonable that is.

Sitting down and talking with them about their behavior, your behavior, how this effects each others feelings, social impacts, boundaries, and the issue of Trust! You have to be able to trust them, and they have to be able to trust you! If you're unable to talk about it with them, post it on a blog or site they like to pester you on, with the implication that you very much do wish to talk to them about and how you feel about their behavior on not wanting to talk.

I know it seems silly and unreasonable. But it really works when it does work. Since the major issue is trust.

I don't think it's really an invasion of privacy--the only things they can see, after all, are what you chose to put in a public place that's able to indexed by search engines.

It's more like a parent who decides to chaperone every trip to the mall and can overhear what you and your friends are saying. At age 11, sure. At 15, 16, 17, you're likely to be going "gimme some room to breathe, I'm nearly an adult now."

And at age 20, it's just ridiculous.

Is your sister 20?

Yeah, um...Princess's parents don't exactly do that often. I believe her mom told on her dad when her mom found out that her dad was reading the livejournal entries. She locked those because she had expected no parent to find them, and they ended up doing so. She locked it once she realized he had found it.

But on myspace, I think it was her way of reaching out to her family, and while her family helped her out with college when she was stressed due to reading a blog, this was completely different... >>;

Wow. Well I'm glad my parents don't really care about what I post online. I'm old enough that they don't really feel concerned about what I do online so I doubt that they would ever try and check up on me.

The only thing the internet brings to my family affairs is my dad yelling at only seeing the back of my head all evening, because my computer is in the living room. -_-

At age 20 I think it would be considered an invasion of privacy.

But perhaps I have blown it out of scale a bit. Doesn't give a parent or child the right to be so nosy and overbearing to make an individual miserable.

Wow, 22? Oh jeez, he's really overreacting then. XD

Well, she did change stuff around after the whole myspace thing, because she realized the username she'd been using - the one tht follows after Princess - is known by her family and they could find her anywhere.

I told her to change her gaia account name, but she hasn't yet. Don't know why... :(

That's part of why I'm glad to be at college. I do have family living nearby, but I'm in my own dorm and there's no one to criticize me...well, besides my roommates, but they don't.

She's 22. Since I don't know which girlfriend's website this is, I'm not sure when the picture was taken, but probably within the last four years.

I actually need to show my grandmother how to make a myspace. She's trying to find some of the foster children and figures that would be the best place to start looking.

But she does not understand the computer very well at all. Though for a while that the new desktop picture got rid of her game she likes to play and wouldn't hear that it wasn't till I showed her how to get it back.

I'm the main computer person at my house. And well i do not know all that much about them. If I can't do it myself, which is most of the time, i call a friend over.

I don't think either of my parents have discovered myspace.
