i've been vegetarian for 2 years now (going on 3). and since then, i've been sort of picked at by both friends and family. i just hate when people are like "so what do you eat? salad?" or "you know god made animals for us to eat?" well i dont believe that animals should be mistreated and slaughtered. that's my opinion. so is that un-christian to think so? i just wish they'd be more supportive and respectful since i dont know any other vegetarians...what do ya'll think?

Well it's unfair for them to judge you like that. They should be more supportive about your choice.

Personally though, I believe that if animals eat humans, we're supposed to eat them back xD Don't take that the wrong way though; I love eating greens over meat most of the time anyway.

If they can't understand why you chose to make a decision like that, just ask them kindly to please let it rest. There's no use in trying to make someone understand if they're unwilling ;]

Meh. They pick at you because they don't have anything better to do. Personally, I like the taste of meat. So I couldn't be vegetarian. But I respect people that are. There are a lot of good foods out there that are vegan foods...

I'm not sure if their reaction has to do with them feeling defensive about your decision to be vegetarian. Some vegetarians verge on trying to convert people to that diet, so I'm leaning toward them being defensive or ill-informed about what you can and cannot eat. Do you prepare your own vegetarian meals while with family and friends? If not, their reactions may be due to them not wanting to prepare a separate meal for you. Have you spoken with them about this?

Meat is good for you and we do it it in my house, but even I know that meat from the supermarket is about as far from 'natural' as you can get. They pump them full of so much crap that I'm surprised the poor things don't glow in the dark.

As for your family, don't let them bother you none. Most people think you have to have meat in order to stay healthy. Do them a favor and feed them a meal. I have a friend who is a vegetarian and I kept turning her down politely for dinner. She was determined though and I eventually went over there. She made me a fabulous lasagna dinner and I shut my mouth real quick. I can never imagine a vegetarian sitting around nibbling on carrots like a rabbit now. I know you guys eat good lol.

And also, don't be judgmental on those of us who do like our meat. Sure the animals are mistreated, but it's a pretty natural mistreatment. I've seen plenty of video's in which a lion hunts down a zebra or something and is eating it while it's still twitching and trying to get away. I know our slaughterhouses aren't that bad at least.

Why eat anything at all when you can eat chocolate? nah just joking. I have friends who are vegetarians and they have fed me some fantastic meals. I like eating meat however and am more used to it then not. Just try educating your family and friends on the different types of tasty meals there are and try to make them all dinner one night to show them how its done. Goodluck with this topic though.

I don't eat meat. So I know what your going through, I just let it slide.
If the people see that's not bothering you and your going to keep doing what you believe is right they will back off.

I don't eat meat either. Haven't really since I was born. Besides once or twice when my father thought I was being just being a brat when I was little and tried to make me...o.o
weird.

Aww.
Thats horrible.
I use to be a vegetarian when I was younger.
I didn't really eat veggies and lots of fruits, since I don't like em much.
I just ate like pasta, bread and such.
My parents didn't support it either.
I was really young at the time.
About 4-6?
And I wouldn't eat meat because I felt bad about killing animals.
It all went fine until my dad lied to me and said I was eating a "veggie burger"
Now it was my first time eating one so I didn't know they tasted like.
And of course, the jerk my dad is he told me afterwards.
I still really despise that.He constantly kept tricking me by lying.
I was only little so I didn't understand.
And now, unfortunately I eat meat now.
I try to avoid eating so much of it.^^;;

It's definitely unfair for them to judge you like that. It's your body and they should support you with what you decide to do with it. May I ask, are you a vegetarian or a vegan (sp?). I'm sure every one knows, but for those that may not a vegan is someone who doesn't eat meat or anything that comes from animals (cheese, eggs, milk, etc...).

I personally do eat meat, but I don't see anything wrong with eating just veggies. I think they taste great! And half the time I'm 'on the go' I only have time for a salad or ramen noodles (yum!) If you're really serious about this which obviously you are because you're been doing this for 2 years you should just sit your family/friends down and tell them that this is something that's very important to you and you want their support. If it's hurting your feelings or you don't like how you're being treated nothing is going to change unless you do something about it. Good Luck <3

Well, I think it's mean that they should pick on you. Especially if you're not trying to force it on them. I mean, it's everyone's choice to be or not be vegetarian. They should support you.

I personally couldn't be vegi. I'd starve. When I was little I loved vegetables, to the extent that my mum had to hide them behind the potatoes on my plate until i'd eaten other stuff first. xD Now, I can't stand them.

I have been vegetarian for almost 6 years now and i still get people bitching about it. I couldnt live without cheese or milk, but i dont eat anything that was a part of an animal. I dont eat the beef flavor is ramen or soup and i dont eat geletin(you dont want to know what that is...) or anything that has ever touched meat.. I have just learned how to deal with it, ignore them. They dont know what they are talking about, so dont let it get to you. I have had people shove meat up my nose before...it smelled like tuna for a week. People have tryed to put it in my mouth, it has gotten in my hair tons, down my shirt lots, pretty much smeared all over so many times i barley react anymore. Some people will go so far as show you pictures of slaughter houses so you cant eat. Most people will never understand. I hope your freinds are better than mine. If their not, im really sorry and good luck. I hope you dont give up on people.

Wow, that's sick. I'm sorry to hear that. Dx

I would never do that. Well, I threatened to once, but that wasn't due to him being vegetarian, it was because he's practically anorexic </rant>. But still, people should never force their views onto anyoneeee.

Yeah, when I first became a vegetarian, my mother and father used to put ground up meat into stuff, and then tell me after I'd eaten it. (This was years after I'd moved into my own apartment, BTW.)

They also did something very sick and dangerous to a friend who is a recovering alcoholic (they spiked his drink), and fed ground up ham to a Muslim guy.

Self-righteous people just love to undermine other people's beliefs. Sick sick sick.

It's okay if you're vegetarian. That isn't such a bad thing. People may laugh, but don't mind them.

You should make them watch movies on the slaughtering of animals for us to eat.

Maybe that might change their minds. :X
