I wish we could post more than one kind of thread so that there is more variety. If someone made a coffee thread, then you can't, you have to post on theirs.

But oh well.
I guess it's due to the NO SPAM tolerance thing.

Yeah, well if you ask me, NO SPAM is quickly turning into GOD FORBID YOU EVEN VAGUELY TOUCH ON A SUBJECT ALREADY BROUGHT UP FIVE MONTHS AGO. There are some thread-locking-happy people around here...

@Brain-Damnage: I'm fairly sure that The Menewsha Nation subforum in General Discussion is for chat :]

- I've always been fond of the General discussion, it's the forum I usually visit first. I've been here since May and I too have noticed that the discussion is getting a bit too much like BettyBeat put it, a "General Answer My Question Quickly Forum". I very rarely reply to threads like that, unless the subject is especially interesting to me or if there are actually people there talking about the topic at hand and I want to add a word in.
Aaaanyway, one of my top favourite links here on Mene is the egosearch. Unless it's threads in the Mene nation, I almost always check back and scan replies added after mine to see if anyone either responsed to my reply or added something witty/interesting. :D
And might I add that the Menewshan Nation is an excellent place to chat and earn loads of gold while you're at it. :3 I don't get why people keep making new threads there though, when they could just as well engage in a chat in someone else's thread. I can understand it when people want a specific theme or look for their chat or whatever, but not when people just make a new thread just because they're bored and want to chat. Err.. I'm not sure I'm making any sense.
And I'm sorry if I'm rambling or incomprehensiblebleble, it's 3 am and I go to sleep now. Will check back here tomorrow. >.o

Yeah, I realized that could happen pretty easily when I made a thread about dream jobs and careers. A few people responded to others' posts, but it seemed like most people just said what their dream job was and left. It wasn't surprising though, considering the topic.

I don't know. I think that it varies... In some threads that happens, and in others, people walk out. A few weeks ago, they seemed to stay in more frequently.
I know that I often leave a thread if I have little more to say on the topic and don't want to wait around to see people reply (and watch the inactivity for five minutes)... I might check back in later, though.
Edit: Yeah... It's been almost twenty minutes since I responded, and I was the last one to do so. That's why I'm unlikely to stick around in a thread; I seem to end up killing them.

@thelittleviolist: I've been waiting for someone to pop in here and just write "Yes." or "No." and leave x3 I think that would be rather humorous

I don't think thread makers reply enough in their own topics to try and start discussions. Maybe I'm being a little hypocritical here, but I don't think the GD always tries to look for something to discuss. That's why topics easily answerable with one word tend to create more traffic because they're easy to answer and people don't have to think or make discussion. I feel like majority of GDers are hit and run posters.

I don't think these topics are trying to be like surveys. The people who start the topics talk about something of themselves and want to find people who are similar to them or have something to imput.

Yes/No *snicker*
Seriously though... it has been this way for a while. I think with the influx of newer users it is more prevalent but there have always been topics like "pirates or ninjas", "coke or pepsi", "Do you like xyz?", etc.
In my opinion these types of topics are borderline spam since technically there is nothing to discuss. You just respond to the spoonfeed and move on. I don't typically respond to these threads at all unless I am out for gold and nothing more.

I think it is a bit like a glorified petition but I also think that its better than that as its more personal and you are able to get proper feedback and communication from people. Thats what aids this site into becoming a better community.

I feel that General Discussion should be something like a cross between The Menewsha Nation and Debates; In both forums people actually read through some posts before they make a reply (Well, in most cases anyway), and they actually stick around (Again, in most cases). General Discussion are conversations, much like in The Menewsha Nation, but with one single topic, much like in Debates.
Perhaps there should be a new forum or subforum dedicated to single-question threads. That, or add a new rule to The Menewsha Nation that states those threads belong there, and not in General Discussion. Just so we have an excuse to move those rather pointless threads somewhere else so that it'd be easier to navigate through General Discussion and actually find some discussion :]
And, like jurupamae said.. I would consider it borderline spam as well. It's just a more sophisticated form of spam.

- Agreed. Cheap way to get gold.
I also agree with.. whoever it was that said it is also up to the original poster to actually reply to other people's replies and try to create a discussion. People should rather make one good thread, care about it and be involved and make it alive rather than making thousands of topics just for the sake of making a topic.
And anyway, you get much more gold by discussing a topic with different users than just replying with 'yes' or 'no'.
