What is the worst customer you've ever had?
What about the best one?
I'm sure everyone has lots of good stories.
Edit: If you want to complain about/praise your bosses too, Raspberry Tea just made a thread here: http://www.menewsha.com/viewtopic.php?p=1600776#1600776

Here are mine:
Worst customer: I work at Claire's where we have a 10 items for $5 sale sometimes. On the signs it says redlined items originally under $10 are 10 for $5. Items originally over $10 are half off of half off. The items are always mixed together, so it can be confusing for a customer who only reads the 10 for $5 part.

So when a customer comes up to me with items that are on the separate deals, I make sure to sort them out for her so she knows exactly what she's going to pay. Right away she says "No I got those on the 10 for 5 rack." So I explain the rest of the sign and she doesn't seem to understand, so I go get the sign, bring it over, and show her where it says that.

She gets REALLY mad and starts yelling at me. "NO! I got those off the 10 for 5 rack, and that's what I should get them for!" and "Well I'm buying these things for an 83 year old woman so I hope you understand what I'm trying to do!"

So I'm trying really hard to stay calm and reexplain the promotion...and after a while she takes out a couple of items and says "well I won't get these, but I'd like to get the rest for $5, can you do that for me?" Of course the items add up to more than $5 and I can't just change the prices on a whim(I really resent that some other stores do, it encourages people to be assholes). FINALLY she left without buying them, but geez it took forever.

Best customer: I actually have multiples of these. Whenever I pierce little girls ears, they're always really scared at first. After I pierce the first ear though, they're always relieved that it didn't hurt and are fun to be around. Also, it's really fun to give them the mirror in the end because they're always so excited.

I work in the cosmetic department of a chain drugstore. We DO have a policy of "if you don't like it and keep the receipt, you can come back and exchange or return it". It's a policy that we've always had and I like. After all, it's hard to know sometimes just looking at a colour if it's right for you. I have so many customers that will open sealed packagesand test it out on their fingers, hands, sometimes even mouth, if it's a lip product. And when I try to stop them and inform them that they can't do that, they yell at me. :? Come on, we can't sell something that has your germs all over it. I have to go and collect everything that's been opened, if I catch them doing it, and treat it as a damaged product. And some of them are doing it with no intention to buy anything that day!

There are ways to tell if something's right for you or not. A lot of brands have things that pull down and you hold an inch over your wrist. Even if that's NOT the brand you want, use it anyway, then take the bottle over to the brand you want and find a match. With lipstick, if it's a non-sealed package, go ahead and open it. Then find a mirror and hold it in front of your face. If it doesn't look good against your skin in a mirror, it won't look good actually applied.

I do have a lot of regulars who love me and always check out with me, no matter what else they need from any other part of the store, and that's always nice. There are two older women, a mother and a daughter, who always comment when they have me working in another part of the store due to someone calling out and tell me I'm out of place and "We wish you were in the makeup department today so you could help us instead of ______." and that always makes me feel good, that they value my opinions that much. :D

I work at McDonalds. Worst customer? Where do I begin? I've had more then good. Rarely do I get a respectful customer. I hate people anyway. D: Most people I cannot stand. Especially old people. Old people are the worst. I don't even know why I work there if I can't stand the dumbness of Humans. .________.

@ Raspberry Tea:
Wow, that's out of control that people yell at you for saying that they can't try on makeup! Gross. We have similar problems with people trying on our makeup...little kids sometimes put their fingers into makeup and make it look disgusting. It's like...hello, we have testers for a reason. I've never had anyone yell at me for telling them they weren't allowed to though.

I love those kinds of customers that think you're really great and remember the things you've done for them. They make days go by so much more easily.

@ Pretty Handsome Awkward:
Yeah, I don't think I'd be able to deal with working at a fast food place. Claire's can be bad sometimes, but most of the customers are friendly if you treat them really well.

I used to work for McDonalds. I was there for two years before I finally got sick of the customers, managers, and my co-workers. I'm not sure how it is at all McDonalds, but at ours the managers would freak out over any and all waste. While you were supposed to toss meat after the timer went off, we were told not to and I was actually reprimanded for doing so. I know of cases where we'd have food we cooked at lunch still in the holding trays until 6 at night. I try not to eat there anymore, but when I do I only go late at night when the've broken everything down and they have to cook everything fresh.

The worst customer I ever had there was when I was new. I was the onlyperson on register, we had a bus, someone else was running my orders for me, and the grill team was overwhelmed. This guy came in behind the bus load and was apparently quite irritated at having to wait. (Which begs the question, when he saw the lobby was completely packed, why did he not decide to go somewhere else to eat if he was in that much of a hurry?) By the time he got up to me he was beet red. When I asked him for his order he began screaming at me that I was poorly trained and should be fired. I was crying by the time he was done and ducked over to the drive thru window and asked the girl there to trade with me until he was gone.

I know! Do people not think of germs? These are grown adults! I would like to ask one of them sometime if they'd buy a product that someone else obviously used before them, but I try not to be a smartarse when I'm on the clock. And don't get me started on kids! They often take and smear lipgloss and nailpolish all over displays and fixtures. Or open shampoo bottles and squeeze them out into the aile. Or spray entire cans of axe and tag all over themselves or each other. Or.... Yes. Parents need to watch them when they're shopping.

And they really do! I adore my regulars. They're what keep me sane.

  • I worked at Cost Plus World Market for nine months. They sell Food, wine, bedding, furniture, baskets, art, frames, candles, bath stuff, knick knacks, glassware, jewelry, and anything else you can think of. It's a lot of stuff to be familiar with, and it took me a long time to learn where everything was. Oh my god, it was awful. Customers are inconsiderate, rude, mean, and bitchy, and I could go on forever and ever.

I hate it when people see ANY sign that says 1/2 off or whatnot, and when I ring something up that I know is not on sale, they try to tell me that they found it under the sale sign, and I have to walk with them to show them that no, it's not on sale, just like I told you.

Our manager decided to only hire weak small girls to work there, and after a while there were only 2 guys who were able to do furniture carryouts on their own left. Which meant that I did carry-outs with another person my size (I'm 5'4" and I weigh 120). I'm not talking small stuff either. I'm talking dining tables, couches, media stands, bookshelves, everything.

I hate it when customers come to pick furniture up, and when we see that they have a small car, and that the furniture won't fit at all, we tell them to come back with a larger vehicle. 9 times out of 10, they say "Can't we just take it out of the box?" *sigh* "No, Ma'am, I assure you, It STILL WON'T FIT" but no matter how many times we tell them, they make us do it, then it doesn't fit, then we have to put it back in the box and we just wasted 20 minutes.

For some reason people have it in their heads that the furniture models on the floor will be the furniture they will receive when they buy it, and often ask questions like "Can I get 40% off because this has a scratch?" to which I reply "No, Ma'am, that's the display model. The one you buy will come in a box, and it's brand new. It doesn't have any scratches." I even had someone say "Well, I really wasn't prepared to spend $174 on a bench today. It has a dirt stain on it too. Can't you just lower the price? "No, Ma'am, but it's already 50% off because it's the last one, being sold as-is, dirt stain and all." If you weren't prepared to spend that much, GO TO WAL-MART. It's next door. I'm sure they sell benches for less than $174.

These are just a few of my many complaints. If I remember any more, I will be sure to share them with you. But the bottom line is, people are stupid. That's a fact.

I'm lucky enough that I'm not of age to work in retail yet- these are some of the worst horror stories I've heard.

Unfortunately my mom had to work in retail after my parents go divorced. She worked at the store Sur la Table which sells cookware. I don't quite remember the stories she told us, but people utterly suck.

And Juniper, I love Claire's so I'll try to watch out for the 10 items for $5 sale- it's silly that people get mad.

Oh- during the summer I volunteer at the zoo in the farm section mostly dealing with goats, small mammals, and children. One day I was on my break and buying lunch there, and as I was getting my soda this woman asked me were something in the restaurant was and I was like "Uh I don't work in this section O_O" and she was like "Oh I just assumed you worked here." and walked off.

Actually now that I think of it I do have some stories about bad people when I was at the zoo, but it was mostly just 30-year-old guys trying to pet rabbits with their entire hand while talking to their wife and ignoring me trying to tell them to use two fingers.

@ Raspberry Tea:
Ewww, that is so disgusting about them telling you to leave the meat out after it could be spoiled! Blech, glad I'm a vegetarian.

And I've wanted to ask people that before myself(about used make up). I wish there was a way to get that point across without being rude, but I can't think of any.

Even if we just loose the original packaging for something like a hairclip and have to write down the sku # and price on the back, it is amazing how no one wants that one. Used makeup would be even worse...even I wouldn't want that. Our damaged items are destroyed by our district manager too, it's such a waste.

@ padfootsy:
I hate it when people try to trick you into giving them lower prices! It's like they don't realize that that's the same thing as stealing.

When I worked at Penney's I had a customer come in and stick clearance tags on a bunch of clothing. I only recognized one item as being full price and then had to go check everything else. And low and behold, everything else was full price too. She did it when we were closing too, so I'd be in a hurry to get her out of there.

@s w e e t & SPLENDID:
Don't worry too much, there are good customers too. I just like to whine way more than I like to give people credit. :D

Yeah, the 10 for $5 deal is awesome! Sometimes we even have 15 for $5. Most of the time when we have the sale it's on the weekend, but it's not every weekend.

Isn't it though? I could go on and on about the management at this particular McDonalds, but that would be a slight bit off topic as this is supposed to be about customers.

I understand completely about the clearance tags. We usedto use these small, orange stickers that broke apart if you tried to peel them off. It was almost impossible to switch stickers that way. Then our district decided that they wanted us to use these HUGE round yellow stickers because "it's easier for the customers to see the savings!" Yes. And it's also easier for our customers to lift the stickers off of clearance items and put them onto anything they wish. I had someone pull the exact same thing on me and I was modifying everything until she handed me something with a $2 sticker on it that rang over $16. ...I'm not that stupid. I called management right away.

Lol @ retail.

My first job was at JCPenney, and I worked there for a year. I hated all the customers, because they were either bratty tweens, or bitchy old women. The clothes were pretty nasty too. D:

I used to get the WORST customers there. They would bring like, 29342865 items into the fitting rooms, and not only leave them in there when they walked out, but leave EVERY SINGLE ITEM inside out and off of hangers. I could always tell when they left something in there, too, because they would walk out of the fitting rooms quickly, and not make eye contact with me or even bother to TELL me they left twenty pair of jeans in there.

Don't even get me STARTED on friggin ten dollar off coupons!! Women would come in ALL THE TIME with ten dollar off coupons, buy something, and come back after the promotion was over wanting to return their item and DEMANDING "their" ten dollars back. I had one woman I was doing a routine return for, and I told her what her refund was, 40-something dollars. She told me "That's not right" and I said "Okay, let me just check again." I re-rung the return with EXTRA care (because I'm SUPER nice when I'm on the clock), and it came out exactly the same. I told her "I'm not sure what's wrong, are you sure there's an error?" and she pointed to the item she got the ten dollars off of, and said "Look, I paid $21 for that." and I said "No, you paid $11. See? It says right here, $11." She said "Well, no, I paid $21!" to which I asked "Did you have one of those ten dollar coupons?" and she said "Yes, I paid with one of those" and I said "Okay, that's where it's going wrong, then, because you actually paid eleven dollars, not twenty one because you had the coupon." She argued with me about it for a good ten minutes! After awhile I got pretty frustrated and said "No, you are wrong. That is a coupon it is not your money," and she made me call a manager. Luckily I didn't get in trouble because I was RIGHT. If she had walked into a totally different store and tried to use that coupon for something else, like "here's ten dollars" they would have said "No ma'am, that's a COUPON" IT'S NOT FRIGGIN MONEY!

I work at American Eagle now, and it's sooo much better than JCPenney. The customers are mostly nice, and not complete idiots (usually). Plus, older people are turned off by the loud music, which I like.

The best customer I ever had there was a lady who was helping her daughter shop for new "cool" clothes. I helped them find some really cute stuff, and I showed the little girl how to wear a hoodie the AE way (half zipped, sleeves rolled up). She LOVED it! I even got the mom to sign up for a credit card, and she thanked me! I was so happy. Also today when I was working, a pregnant woman came over to my section, and I asked her if she needed any help finding a size. She did, and I helped her. Afterward, she said to me "I wasn't even in here more than thirty seconds and someone helped me. Thank you so much." Apparently sales people avoid her because she's pregnant, she said. I just said "No problem."

n.n;; Kind of a wall of text, but I have SO many retail stories. Good AND bad. I could talk about it for hours.

@ Raspberry Tea:
You should make a thread for everyone to complain about their bosses! I could link to it.

I wish I had called management when that happened to me. I just told her the stuff wasn't on clearance and let her go. I casually mentioned it to management later and they freaked out and made me go to the back room to review the camera tapes to show them who it was. At least they have an idea now in case she comes back.

@Trueno:
My first job was at JC Penney too! And I can completely relate about the fitting rooms. Once I had a customer leave 14 big huge puffy prom dresses all over the ground(I counted them as I was hanging them up) and then she stomped all over them so they looked really terrible. And you're right, people who are slobs NEVER make eye contact with you. If they're so ashamed about being pigs, you'd think they'd stop it.

I never had that problem with the $10 off coupon though. Wow, people can be so dense.

That's good that you're at a better job now. I'm not really, but I'm getting paid more and have more responsibility at least.

Done and done. http://www.menewsha.com/viewtopic.php?p=1600776#1600776

I knew right away it wasn't an accident. Sometimes things won't ring up because the clearance batch is out of date, but we never mark anything down more than 75% ever, unless it's seasonal and even then that's just candy. It's sad but there are people who live off of scams like this. It's the same as stealing and I wouldn't ever be able to enjoy anything gotten that way if it was me.

I know, right?! It's like, if you're so ashamed of being a friggin slob, just bring out your crap to me. It's that simple.

Stomped all over the dresses?! xD I just got a funny image of a girl in a fitting room just deliberately stomping on prom dresses just to be mean. >.<

I was SO underpaid at Penneys by the time I quit, because I had gotten so good at zoning that I just did everything.

fast food. ugh.
I work downtown where we have a LOT of homeless folks and drunks. I don't mind some of them cause some are REALLY nice.
worst: (I have 2). This guy comes in, totally drugged out of his mind and orders 2 tacos and throws a dollar on the counter. They cost 1.08 and since I had JUST gotten on front counter I didn't want my tills to be off at all (at this point with seniority 20-50 cents or even a dollar isn't too big of a deal now and then but at the time I didn't wana mess with it.) so I ask him for the 8 cents and he throws a handful of change at me. I take what I need and tell the ONLY other person in the store (it was dead and the others where outside in the back taking a smoke break) that this guys was weird and I'd like it if he handed out his order after he made the tacos. The guy sees me talking and starts screaming "don't ****ing spit in my food! stupid f***ing b*tch" etc etc. he then went to grab at me over the counter when I was giving him his money back so he would leave and screamed he was going to kick my ass before the guy behind counter with me jumped over the counter and chased him out.
second one: group of drunk guys come in, they are homeless and pretty icky but I'm always really nice. They stare at my chest obviously (I have an hourglass figure and I'm kinda accustomed to it by now but still...) and start going "wow Jen (they had read my name tag) you are AMAZING" and then started singing about going and doing drugs and stuff like that. was just gross.
I have also had a handful of bitchy drive thru orders but we get em out fast enough so its not too bad

Best is a regular who is a bus driver so he comes in twice every night or so (when he works) and he is just always super nice. One night I was out cleaning lobby and just having a bad day so he hugged me and stuff cause I was crying a bit. :3
I have a lot of good and bad stories but meh those stand out the most.

I used to work retail in a high end boutique. The worst customer I ever had was actually not ruse at all. in fact the problem was he was TOO nice. It was this old man (he actually showed me his AARP card) who was rather wealthy and fancied himself a playboy. He continually hit on me, and kept trying to take me for a ride up in the mountains in one of his Ferraris. I politely said no, but the man actually started stalking me! He would call into the store and ask for my work schedule and he would wait outside for me to walk by. It was so scary, and I started getting really paranoid. Thankfully it didn't last too long. I told the security guards about it, and they started escorting me to and from the store.Plus they threatened to press charges against the man so he stopped persueing me.

Wow, Shadowfflur, that's scary. While we had someone phone-stalking one of our girls for awhile (she'd get obscene calls, and she was the only one to get them) that's never happened to me or anyone else I know. I can't believe he sat out there waiting for you. At least he didn't follow you home or anything like that, I hope?

@ Trueno:
Lol, I was probably exaggerating about her stomping on the dresses. I'm sure she didn't maliciously stomp on them, she probably just stepped on them because there was no room to walk on the floor.

@Naiyo:
That's really weird about the guy screaming at you. I would have been really scared. That's one good thing about working at the mall. If we have problems like that we can call security and they come pretty quickly.
Eww, I hate it when people are lewd like that. Especially when you're at work and you have to keep sitting there and being polite.
The bus driver sounds really sweet. Wow, you must have been having a really terrible day to be crying.

@Shadowfflur:
I don't know what I'd do in that situation. That's terrifying. It's never happened to me, but for some reason it happened a lot to a coworker of mine. It was like..."wow, what makes her attract all of these stalkers?" I felt really horrible for her. They were all young stalkers though. An old stalker sounds extra creepy.

I was working as an assistant manager at a Sonic Drive Inn and to help the orders get out at the tail end of a rush, I grabbed a couple and took them out. It was the middle of winter, snow on the ground, late at night and really cold, but not in the store so going outside was refreshing, lol. Well, a family that I brought an order too commented on why I wasn't wearing a coat and I said something about them not having them in my size and the the guy offered me his coat and wouldn't take no for an answer. I took his coat and even tho it didn't fit me, it turned out to be some expensive trench coat and I sold it to my manager for 100 bucks, lol. Best tip I ever got!

I work in a holiday complex, so have to deal with annoying people more often than I'd like.

Like the couple who left used condoms all over the lounge in their cottage when they checked out >.<
Why they couldn't put them in the trash is beyond me.

Then the guy who broke everything in his cottage - Toaster, Kettle, Hot water boiler, TV o_0

Oh and a really annoying one was this family with two young kids. We have mattress protectors on all the beds so that if someone has an 'accident' it doesn't get through to the mattress. They took the mattress protectors off for a reason unknown to me. One of their kids peed all over the bed. So what did they do? They flipped the mattress over and let her pee all over the other side too! >.< So at 10am on a Saturday morning we discovered the mattress that was drenched in urine and we had to get it outside (still dripping) and buy a new mattress before 3pm that same day when the next lot of people were coming >.< Which was not fun as we have 5 cottages to change over on a Saturday between 10am and 3pm, so that doesn't really leave much time for shopping x.x

Holy hell, that's really awesome! He must have been either really rich or really friendly(or both) to just give away something expensive like that.

@ Ebil:
Ewww, those things are all really terrible and 2 of them are gross too. Is there any way you can get ahold of the people who just stayed in the cottage to charge them for those damages? I mean the stuff they did was really thoughtless and expensive to repair. They should have to pay for it.

I just thought of another story to share with everyone. Once when I was at JC Penney a woman came up to the register. When she paid she pulled her money OUT OF HER UNDERWEAR! She was really dirty too, so it was ultimate gross. I almost told her that I couldn't take the money, but I wasn't sure if that would get me in trouble. I still don't know which was the right thing to do.

i haven't had a job yet, but my sister works at a clothing store called Suzy Shier and at the end of the day once, they checked the change rooms, right? Then, her co-worker found a pair of short shorts left there. oO The worst part was that they [the shorts] were filled with crap. Like, someone couldn't find a bathroom or something. o---o

Ewwwww! Right to refuse sale, hon. God now I'm going to worry about how many other people do that.

I work at a small, family-owned grocery store. We get a lot of senior customers, so you can imagine that there can be some bad experiences. xD Thankfully, I haven't had any really bad experiences with customers yet; however, there have been plenty of STUPID customers.

There aren't very many black people here in Kelowna, but one of the few guys who works in produce is black. So an old lady comes up to him and asks if we have any nigger toes. He's never heard that term before (nigger toes = brazil nuts), so he was dumbfounded. XD

Let's see.. the other day these two crackheads came in with those baggy hoodies, so I was keeping an eye on them and sure enough, they tried to shoplift. The goods? A couple packages of jello powder. Like, really, 89 cents or something. Go figure. I had them empty their pockets and kicked them out.

Shoplifting is actually a bit of a problem in our store, and I work a lot of nights, so I have to deal with that. I'm by no means a big guy, either. XD I'm only 21 and about 5'10-ish. Anyway, there were a couple of suspicious ladies in the store one time, so a couple of us were following them around, and they ended up trying to steal two single eggs.

A couple weeks ago, this old man came up to me in the freezer section holding a frozen can of iced tea. "Excuse me," he says, "Is this good topping for ice cream?" ... I just looked at him funny and said "No, it's juice."

We had a shopping cart FULL of a bunch of bags of chips that were close to the expiry date, so they were all marked down to sell. Somehow this one lady lost track of her own shopping cart, and she was pushing around the one full of chips for a good few minutes. I walked by and said, "Wow, snack time is it?" She looked confused, then she looked down and got really embarrassed. xD

Like my assistant manager once said, Kelowna is full of intelligent doctors and lawyers and the like, but for some reason, whenever they step into a grocery store they suddenly become as dumb as a doorknob.

I've got dozens of other stories but I can't remember them. >> I'll probably come back to this thread later.
