Oy, I can relate to some of these stories pretty well. That fact horrifies me. -.- I'm the head chef in a rather large restaurant, and, of course, you have the people who complain about food. (Whenever they're not busy complaining about service, but I can't do anything about that.)

And since the servers don't feel that they should have to listen to complaints on the food, that the cooks should fix it (I'm refraining from berating them on here about the fact that I can and have done their jobs better than them WHILE doing my own as well, because I do that enough in the work place when they get snippy with me.) and because ALL of our current managers were either servers or bartenders, but not cooks... well, they side with them.

So, whenever the guests have a complaint about something with their food, no matter WHAT it is, they bring me out to deal with it. Cause the joy of adding the word 'head' in front of chef is that I get to add 'ache' after 'head' when I'm done listening.

Now, some of the stuff I hear is stupid. Like someone screaming at me because we don't carry refried beans. I'm sorry, ma'am, we're not an authentic Mexican restaurant. In fact, we're not a Mexican restaurant at all. We're a grill, for the most part. If you'd like Mexican food, there's a Mexican restaurant right down the street.

I mean, it's really not that complicated, is it? If you want Italian food, go to an Italian restaurant. Chinese, Mexican, freakin' Scottish, it doesn't matter, go to THAT type of cuisine.

And my personal favorite, though, is when the complaint about the food is that "Well, I wanted such and such food without such and such item added to it. AND I told my server, but it still came out with this item on it and now I can't/won't eat it." In which case, I've wasted my time cause a server doesn't know how to ring food in properly.

The worst person I've ever had to deal with, though, actually turned out pretty fun. Cause, see... I'm not really all that nice. I'm crude and I'm upfront, I'm rather blunt about things too. So, when this man started yelling at me because his "salad did not have enough croûtons on it!" Okay, so I can go get him some more. That doesn't bother me. "No, you can just go make me a new salad now, with more on it, cause this one will be cold by the time you get back!"

"Sir, you know the salads ARE cold, right...?"

"Then it'll be warm! Now, go make me a new one!"

"Excuse me...?" This is when I start to get irate.

"I want a new salad! This one's not made right!"

And then he chunks the salad on the floor. Which is when I get really ticked off. Now, luckily, my managers like me and realize that firing me will lose them more money than kicking one person out who wasn't going to come back anyways. Cause, otherwise, I'd be out of a job, since I told him "Well, of course it's not right. There's not enough carpet fibers in it yet. You have to grind it in when you throw it down, make it forceful, like you mean it. Then, see, you really look angry. Right now, you just look like a jackass."

That's when the completely stunned look on his face satisfies me enough to turn around and walk back to the kitchen. Somehow managing to NOT break his nose.

Though, I've had good ones too. Like people asking me to come out and talk to them so they can tell me how much they like the food. I even got to sit down and talk cooking with one guy who was there, cause he was going through culinary school and complimented the food and wanted to talk to me about it. We went over things like spices and recipes and that was fun. So it's not all bad.

It's just that the bad is that much more memorable.

I work at the photo lab/service desk at a grocery store.
Obviously customers come to us when they have a problem with their transaction. I can usually solve them in a good manner, but once in a while you'll get a customer that you just can't satisfy and they'll storm out, saying that they'll just go shop somewhere else.
Oh well. Can't say we didn't try.
My best customers are my regulars that know me by name, wait so that they can be helped by me, and notice when I am not there. I admit I flirt a bit with some of my male customers that are regulars. But not so much that it would get me into trouble.

@ nike13:
Yeah, I've never been called racist for something stupid like that, but I know some others that have. I think that some people feel like if they call you racist they'll get their way cause no one wants to be labelled racist. Or maybe some of them have dealt with lots of racism and have just become paranoid.

Lol, that bargaining reminds me of the first customer I was talking about. It's really weird when people think that those who work in the store have control over the prices.

@ psyrien:
Wow, that lady is really weird. It would be so boring to sit in a fast food restraunt all day. Does she read or something?

@ Melissa:
Luckily, Claire's is pretty lenient with returns, so I don't have to deal with a lot of stuff like that, but I know what you mean about people who can't speak english. I wish I knew a bunch of other languages so I could always explain thing quickly and clearly.

@ Ayeikha:
Your stories made my day! Especially the one about the salad. I can't believe you had the guts to say that to him, he completely deserved it. I never think of things as witty as that until after the incident has already happened. I might have put his salad in the microwave or oven for a little bit though...he wanted it warm.

@ tigerangel:
At least they won't come back and bother you anymore, lol.

Well i use to work at Victoria Secret and omg people are so serious when it comes to their bras. o.o

I had this one lady come in and it was like only my second day working there so i didn't know much about any of the bras, and let me tell you there are tons to learn about. So when she came up to me asking about a strapless bra i explained ok, i will try and help you the best i can, i just started working here so i may have a little trouble. She just was like ok... and she said something about wanting a silly bra or some crap. I got all confused and just started showing her the strapless bras we had. She was like no no no are you not understanding what i am saying. I am like not really, i don't think we have a silly bra : / Then she got all sorts of mad and was trying to explain the bra to me and i was about to go take her to what i thought she was talking about and shes like just forget it, Victoria Secret sucks and blah blah blah then she walked out.

One of my best customers was when i was working the cashier and she was just so friendly. She started telling me about her day and that she was on a shopping spree. She introduced her baby to me and was telling me the stuff she was buying and why she had came to the mall and what not. For some reason it just made my day. xD

I used to work for Clairs... yeah... the people who come in there are stupid alot of the time... and the management can be stupid too. Thet put me and another girl on, 2 weeks after we started and wanted us to close the store. Neitehr of us had ever done any of the closing paperwork or anything...

let's see... worst customer... and i've had alot of bad customers... the worst would be this one guy when I was at spencer's last year.

the store polocy is that if we get a large bill ($50 or $100) even though each register has one of those checker pens a manager must check the bill before you can take it. There was a guy, who wanted to use a $100 for a $14 purchase... and the assistant manager was on break. I had to call her back to come check the bill for me. He refused to get it chnaged at another store, or use another form of tender. Then I tried to suspend the sale and do the next customer while I waited, and the computer wouldn't let me go back because i had already gone to the money section, so he was holding up the whole line, and I was the only employee in the store... *growls* and he was so rude about it too.

favorite customers - there have been a lot as well... my favorite overall would have been when I worked at the picture people. There was this mom who I approched, cuz when we were slow we would stand in the mall and invite people in to have a free session and get 1 free picture for being a model. So the mom said ok, and her two kids were kinda squirming around, but It went well I think. It was one of my first photo shoots. At the end we bring out hte pictures, and we always used to blow one up to 10x13 and frame it. I did one with the two kids together, the girl sitting in a rocking chair and the brother with his arm around her. The mom started crying when she saw it. ^_^ luckily they were having a sale where you got the frame free when you got the big one so she was really happy.

My boss yelled at me about the picture, but I didn't care. your not soposed to use the rocking chair with the black background, but i think it came out really well. and the mom defenatly was happy so *giggles*

I can't believe he sat out there waiting for you. At least he didn't follow you home or anything like that, I hope?
No, thankfully not. I would drive like a bat out of hell some nights, and others I would go in a couple circles if I felt like I was being followed. Also some friends would loan me their cars so it was a differnt vehicle to throw him off.

There were a couple times that I answered the store phone and he was asking for my schedule (not knowing it was me on the phone) after the first time he called I told my store manager and we notified all the employees not to release each other schedules or personal information.

It was a really scary situation, but thankfully my manager was really understanding and everyone really bent over backwards to accomidate me. Hopefully I never have that happen again. XP

@juniper- Yeah it really was creepy. I guess he thought flaunting money in front of my face would buy me, but I'm not that kind of girl. Plus he even told me outright that he wanted to have another child. *shudders* Gross.

I no longer work with customers (yay!) but I spent 2 years working at a video store, which made me not to ever work with customers again. I was a shift too, so I had to deal with the crappiest of people. :x

My worst? A lot of my worst kinda blend together. It almost always was about late fees, though once, towards when I started, I almost got hit with a movie. A guy got sick of standing in line (on a friday) and chucked the movie at the registers. I was signing in and it zoomed by, just barely an inch from my head. Otherwise I had been yelled at quite a few times and used to have quite often that I'd go in the back room to curse and/or cry.

Anyways, I did have great customers too. The regulars that were always so friendly and happy to see us, and joked around with us. I still miss a few of those people.

@ Mirith:
Yeah, the people at Victoria's Secret always seem to be very intense and knowledgable about bras, so customers have probably come to expect that. You warned her though. She could have asked to talk to another associate if she was really that bothered.

Sometimes chatty customers really do improve the day. If they're really happy about being there sometimes it makes everyone else happier too.

@ Phedre:
I closed at Claire's 2 weeks after I started too >.< They had trained me to do paperwork already though. But on my second day alone, both of the registers broke down when I had a bunch of customers!

It's crazy when people want to buy something really small and give you a hundred, especially at the beginning of the day. I've had times when I had to turn people away because I didn't have change for them yet.

That's really awesome that you can give people a free picture when the store's slow. It's insane that your manager yelled at you after you made the mom so happy. Did you tell the manager that the mom was so happy that she cried?

@ topostarlight:
Oh my god, some people have no respect. He seriously threw a movie at you?! You could of been hurt, I hope he got kicked out of the store.

then I worked in a liqour store and I about had heart failure when a drunk man exposed himself to me D:

but all in all I'd say the worst customer was the one who knocked over three bottles of expensive alcohol and decided he was embarrassed and walked out :P

Gross, I'm glad I can say that no one has ever exposed themselves to me. You're the second person here that has though. I figured/hoped it would be a little rarer than that.

I knocked over a bottle of expensive alcohol when I was little  . My mom told someone though and would have paid for it if they asked her to.

I used to work at Denny's on the graveyard shift as a waitress. I think my worst customer was this grouchy lady with her husband - I could tell fro mthe beginning that she was going to be a hassle. She wanted some sausage breakfast bowl but didn't want sausage, so, I put *no sausage* on the ticket. When she got it, she said she DID want sausage, but on the side, not in the bowl. So.. I offered to change it for her. But no, she got all upset and said if I brought it back that the chef was going to spit in her food. I tried to tell her that all I would have to do was get some sausage, and her food wouldn't be touched, she then told me she wanted to talk to the manager because I wouldn't leave her alone. My manager was watching the whole time and knew this lady was completely crazy, so she just fixed her food herself and that was that.

As for my best customer, it was probably this table I got just at the end of my shift one night. I was completely grouchy and irritable, my relief was late and it was like 6 teenagers, which is always terrible. They were actually super nice and even left me a $10 tip! I felt so bad for being in the mood I was in when I was taking care of them, but they definitely brightened my day. :)

Had a rather... strange lady come in today. She wanted to smell perfume, alright that's normal. First she can't smell one that made me and the customer behind her GAG, but that happens sometimes. People react differently to scents. She tries another that I don't have a tester for, so I open our only unsealed box. It happens to be the larger size. She decides she wants this one.

Me: It comes in two sizes. This is X.x oz and is $XX.xx. The one next two it is a bit cheaper. It's x.x oz and $Xx.xx
Her: I want the smaller one. I'm late for a meeting. OH I HAVE OTHER SHOPPING! What are you doing? You'll mix them up. D:
Me: No, I'm just putting it under the counter until you get back. :D (note I've put the larger back in the box and gotten a smaller bottle that's still sealed. Just as she asked.
Her: Okay, I'm ready.
Me: *ringringring* That's $Wx.yz
Her: *pays then notices the box is sealed* This isn't the one I smelled.
Me: Yes ma'am. It's the same kind, it's the smaller size like you asked for.
Her: I haven't smelled this one though! I want the one I smelled.
Me: I'm sorry ma'am. I thought you said you wanted the smaller one.
Her: I did want the smaller one! I wanted the one I smelled and this is sealed! I'm late for a meeting.
Me: I can get a manager to exch...
Her: NO! I'm late! D: The other one was smaller. I don't know what this smells like.

OKAY, first of all, she was the one shopping and making herself later. Who the heck shops for perfume when they're supposed to be at a meeting? Secondly. It's the same perfume. It will smell the same, even if they're in different sized bottles. It's mass produced in a vat LARGER THAN THE STORE and poured into bottles. They don't make it in the bottle and it smell different from bottle. And if there is any difference between smells, it's because the perfume has been affected by heat, light, age, and air. If it smells different at ALL, it would be because it's not been affected by any of those things. It would smell the way the perfume is supposed to smell. It's in a sealed box. It's in the condition it left the factory. It is also full, which our make-shift tester most likely is not. The sealed box is the better product.

ARG!

@ Majinkoz:
That's really weird. How could she think you were stealing her money at a library? Did she have to pay a late fee or something?

@ Kandi Sushi:
I witnessed something really similar to that at a Mexican restraunt. This lady dropped her fork and wanted a new one. So when they brought her a new napkin with utensils in it, she got really upset and started yelling about how she just wanted a fork and nothing else. I felt so bad for the waiter. Some people are so crazy.

That's awesome about the big tip! I always try to leave at least 20% unless the waiter was rude, but I've never left that big of a tip before.

@ Raspberry Tea:
Wow, that lady was either a huge moron or she thought she could trick you into giving her the big bottle for the smaller price. I'm thinking the latter. No one can be that stupid...right? :?

As much as I hate to disappoint you, I think she really was just that stupid. :? She seemed generally confused and kept pointing to the bigger bottle and calling it the smaller bottle, and kept muttering it to herself as she left. It was quite weird to see someone in their fourties dressed in what looked to be a rather expensive business suit throwing a temper tantrum like a spoiled teenager. (No offense meant to the teenagers on Mene of course!) I'm not sure what kind of meeting she was late for, but I have to wonder how she got to be as successful as she looked when acting like that.

Of course appearances can be deceiving?

The customers today were absolutely lovely though, and I got several compliments on being one of the friendliest people they've seen in a store. :D

Oh god...I have one JUST like that. I work at Vons, and there is this one woman who comes in while I'm there at least once a week...EVERY TIME anyone who knows her spots her, the reaction is simply "Dear god, no...DX"

She is...so CHEAP that it's scary.

My first encounter with her was when she came in to buy some laundry detergent. There was a detergent sale going on; all laundry detergent was 25% off. We advertised it on a flyer and on the tags on the shelves.

Sooo...she bought the detergent, and got all pissy when the 25% was only counted once, instead of twice (since it was on the flyer AND the tag).

So then she goes up to my SUPERVISOR and insists that she gets the discount TWICE, despite his trying to explain that the tags and the flyer were referring to the same discount. I'm getting a migraine as she rants and raves, INSISTING that she's right, and he knows nothing, despite the fact that he's the supervisor.

What makes it even better? She somehow expected two 25% discounts to add up to 75% off.

Even better still?

ALL OF THIS WAS OVER ONE DOLLAR. Seriously...the amount of the discount she imagined would have added up to one dollar, if that.

I hardly know her face...but whenever I hear her voice, my headache starts to come back. XD

My most recent memorable encounter with her was the day before Halloween. We were almost out of pumpkins; all that we had left were some small and medium ones, and very few of those. SO, in order to save space, someone went and dumped the medium pumpkins in with the small ones. He didn't put the medium pumpkin price tag on the bin right away, however...and when only the small tag was there, guess who came in looking for a pumpkin! She took the biggest one and took it to the checkstand...and OH NOES! It was an entire FIFTY CENTS more than the posted price! DDD8 So of course...she got all pissy again, and once again insisted it was $2.50, not $3.00, she's right, we're wrong, blah blah blah. When she FINALLY listened to us when we explained the situation, she insisted she should get it for free, because we "falsely advertised the price."

Both of those times, I was VEEEEERY tempted to just take the amount that was being argued over out of my pocket, give it to her, and say "Here, here's the difference. I want you to take it...and GO AWAY. PLEASE."

Favorite customers? Probably the people who are appreciative...and helpful. The ones who will take a bag and start helping you with their huge order when there are long lines, instead of screaming at you for taking so long. >.>; Sadly, around here, those people are few and far between. D:

I work at a grocery store. Last weekend, I had a customer come up to my register and start venting about how crappy the store was, how no one spoke English, how much we suck. Then, she's doing her credit card at the end, and pulls out her coupons, after she's gotten too far for me to input them. So, she glares at me like I'm the dumbest thing that crawled out of the primordial ooze. The rest of that day, I was on the verge of tears.

But I love my regular customers. Even the pedophile.

Ugh, I hate working with the general public. I think we should all get hazard pay or something like that. Because seriously people are psychotic. You never know what they're going to do!

I was actually seconds from getting punched in the face with a person screaming in my face. And the saddest part is, it wasn't a customer but a co-worker! He got pissed off that I transferred a call to his desk! But thats who the person on the phone asked for, so I transferred it. Next thing I know this man is stomping towards me getting right in my face and screaming and nearly spitting on me. It was so stupid so I turned around in my chair and proceeded to do my work. Well apparently this pissed him off more, and he grabbed the back of my chair and swung it around. So I jumped up and he was right there in my face again pulling back his fist like he was about to punch me. Right then our manager ran up and pushed him away. After things calmed down I told the manager that the jerk has to go or I will because obviously theres a saftey issue. So he was fired. And I still don't feel bad about it.

I work at The Shoe Dept. (which is its own store and not part of a Department store) anyway I just got promoted to being key holder after three years of being there. It is a fun place but the customers that go to the store are complete morons or just have no compassion for other people. The biggest issue is mainly customers who don't speak english and expect you to try to figure what they are saying. They come from different countries and you would expect them to at least bring a translator with them. It is ashame in some cases were they don't understand english and want us to return an item for them. One case I had was a woman who didn't understand english at all trying to return a totally different pair of shoes which we do no carry in one of our boxes. It seems she got the box correct and the reciet but not the actual shoes. We had to explain to her that she can not return them for that reason. We actually had to ask people if they spoke spainish. I personally don't think I should be asking people if they spoke spainish in an area were english is the main language. She was not even trying to learn and you can actually tell on how she went into the situation.

Anyway there has been many of times were customers don't think about other customers and make wild messes that it would take awhile to clean. They also have a habit of taking out to much from the wall and forgetting were everything went. We also have problems were people don't look on the box for a price and expect it to be lower because another Nike shoe is a low price. Forgetting that not everything is the same price if it is the same brand. People just expect low prices at my store and sometimes that is not going to happen.

The best customers are normally the ones who you help and they tend to take you as a human being and not a slave. I had a few of them and it seems like if they make a mess, it is not so much of a big deal because I am helping them. At least they take my help without feeling like I am just a swore on there side.

Other things that do happen to piss me off is not reading the return policy. We need Photo ID and a phone number with the reciet. If you don't like it, don't return the item and sell it on ebay or something. People who return items because they get them for gifts or because they don't like it drive me insane. We have gift cards for gifts and if you have a feeling you might not like it, don't buy it.

Anyway it is mostly bad and very rarely do we have good customers.
