What do you think? I think it's fine as long as the kid is responsible with what they've been given. A cell phone is a damn handy thing to have.
When did you get your first cellphone/mp3 player/gadget? 29
How old were you? I've only had a cell phone, and I got it when I was 29.
Do you use it often? Got rid of the land line, so yes.
Did you have a TV when you were a kid? Yes, I did. Don't have it now as I think it's a pain in the ass.
How big is your cellphone? It's a razor, so normal sized I guess.
Do you like gummi bears? No, gummy worms all the way!

When I was maybe 12 ish, my dad got me a wittle pager in case of any sort of emergency.
I think when I was 14 I got a cell phone, and have had one since.
But, I only use it to call friends every so often and form plans, and I rarely ever use it to text.
I'm 17 and finally conceding defeat to my 'no iPod' policy, because the things are just too damn nifty.
I didn't have my own TV when I was young, but if my dad wasn't home, I got to control the TV and watch whatever.
I do think that cell phones are useful in case a kid is say, at the movies or the mall and something happens. I know the local movie theaters don't have pay phones, which leaves cell phones.
As for MP3 players/iPods, they're just more portable than a CD player and CDs. I know when I was young, I magically lost my whole CD case. : /

I've been spoiled in technology my whole life since my dad develops computers. I got my first cell at 15 and my first Game Boy Color at 10. I got my own computer last year and my TV when I was 4. My first PS2 was at 11, my N64 at nine, my SNES at 7 and ever SEGA Genesis game just for me to play at 4 or so.
Yeah. And I've been on the internet since 7.
I got my first CD player at 13, and kept it until 15 when I got my first iPod. I've been surrounded with technology my whole life, and I hate it.

I think it's disgusting that such young kids have cellphones or mp3's I didn't get my first cell until I was 17 which was when I started paying for it and all. I got my first cd player when I was 11 but I never used it and I didn't get an mp3 till I was 16 and only used that when I was traveling. Now I use it all the time when I am walking or when I am at work but not actually working since it helps to deter customers (I don't want to be leading people around the store on my 10)
As for the t.v we had one and we used it but we also did a lot of sports I actually had a different sport for every day of the weak so all we got to watch was cheese t.v in the afternoons then it was either sport of homework.

What do you think?
I'm not sure...my little sister has a cell phone, I don't think she really NEEDS one, but it is for an emergency, she doesn't like call up her friends and talk on it for house like I do... (and she's 10)
When did you get your first cellphone/mp3 player/gadget?
hmm...well CD player I was little, but mp3/cellphone, it was a LONG time ago, I probably got it when I started 8th or 9th grade. But I had started to stay after school for programs and stuff so that's why...I would have to call home and tell my mom to pick me up. And of course it was for an emergency.
How old were you?
Probably around 13ish....idk.
Do you use it often?
When I was young I would use it like....once a week, lol. It wasn't very often at ALL. But now I depend on it, I use it ALL THE TIME. o.0
Did you have a TV when you were a kid? (We only had one channel)
Yes, I had TV when I was a kid...but I didn't watch a ton of it, I was more of a movie person...I actually was just talking about this during dinner...I would watch the Little Mermaid like 5 times...in a row, one after another. haha.
How big is your cellphone?
Right now I have a razor...so yeah...I'm sure everyone knows what it looks like.
Do you like gummi bears?
YES...I love that candy...but it gives you cavities, so I don't eat them often. :(

It's the age of technology, or something. xD I drove by
these two young girls and each of them had a cell phone out,
most likely texting people. o__o; I also wondered to
myself, "Why would you need one so young?" Maybe their
parents are paranoid and bought them cell phones in case
of an emergency. [my best guess]
I always had CD players when I was young though. And I
went on the computer a lot starting around 7th grade.
My dad loved video games so we always had a game system.
My sister and I would play games a lot.
But we were also active and went outside a lot. It seems
that now kids don't even want to go outside any more. xD

i got my first cell phone when i was twelve.
i have an iphone,
three ipods,
an xbox 360,
a psp,
a nintendo ds,
a nintendo wii,
a tv in my room,
and two laptops.
might i add, i payed for a lot of that myself.
and what i didn't pay for,
i got for good grades or as a christmas or birthday gift.
i think technology is a good thing,
and i think it's good that kids are getting cell phones.
the only thing that bothers me,
are the little eleven year old girls i see,
who walk around on their cell phones,
dressed like sluts.
i want to smack them.

I’m sure my kids will have access to lots of technology because I myself am a technology addict and I would assume so would my husband. I do believe in going outside and playing around, but electronic stuff can be cool too. I had a few gadgets when I was young. My first one was a Nintendo when I was six (that’s what I asked Santa for that year ^_-). I also had a tape recorder and a walkman when I was pretty small. Our family had two TVs, though I didn’t have one of my own. Eventually I got a Gameboy as well. I remember my mother not wanting to buy CDs and DVDs when they came out. They were too expensive and we’d have to buy special players for them which were also expensive. We also didn’t get a computer until I was in eight grade. By the time I started high school though we had a computer, several TVs, I had two versions of the Gameboy, CD players, and a DVD player. : ) I didn’t get my cell phone though until my junior year. I finally got my own laptop as a graduation present.
Today’s kids really do know a lot about electronics. Now I don’t know if I’d go out and buy my five year old a $200 ipod. I might by her a $20 one, let her get used to it and learn how to take care of her own things before I go out and spend money on something she might loose. I think that makes a big difference; whether or not the kid can handle the responsibility of technology.
I don’t know. I think it just depends on what kind of parent you are. I had gadgets of all sorts, but I also did some sports, played outside more than on my Nintendo, and had other hobbies. If you give your kids the ability to experience different things other than electronic means, they most likely will find stuff they’re interested in. : )
But I will say I’m not a mother yet, nor have I had much practice around kids, so maybe I’m just thinking too much of how I’d want it to be. ^_-

What do you think?
I think it's kind of disgusting that kids need TVs in their parents cars. I remember being a little kid and spending most of my time running around outside playing Pirates/REAL Final Fantasy (which was srsly better than the video game.)/Superheroes and only being allowed inside to play video games if it rained, and then we were still jumping on the couch. I didn't have consoles or gameboys growing up, I only got to play at friends houses, so it was a big deal.
When did you get your first cellphone/mp3 player/gadget?
I bought my iPod in 2005, and got a cell phone when I started HS later in 2005
How old were you?
13
Do you use it often?
I use my iPod often, but mostly when working out/on long trips. My cell phone is just sort of a, "Hey mom, can you pick me up?" thing.
Did you have a TV when you were a kid? (We only had one channel)
We had a TV but were severely limited in how much we could watch, mostly being limited to one half hour show on weekdays (usually Bill Nye the Science Guy or Captain Planet) and an hour and a half in the morning on Saturdays. And then of course Dad turned off the cable when they changed our rates, so now we only have the big networks.
How big is your cellphone?
When I first got one I had a Motorola v180, which was cheap and utter crap, but also TINY. When my contract on it ran out after two years I got a RAZR for free through my provider, but it's actually bigger than the v180, and that makes me LOL.
Do you like gummi bears?
Have you ever put those in ice cream? They freeze and break your teeth.

It's just that nowasays almost EVERYONE has a cell phone, and not regular phones at all. kids need to contact their moms and dads somehow if they want to go somewhere after school.. besides it brings safety because if you're in trouble, you can call for help with it.
my first phone I got when I was 12 I think.. it was my older sisters old phone.
When I was younger I would use it more to send sms and
keep contact with my friends, I had a preetty big phone bill too.. now I don't have friends, only call for my boyfriend or family.. phone bill? around 5€.
Always had a tv. can't imagine being without it. :3
there's nothing wrong with having a TV. xP

When I was 5 my rents bought me my first computer game which helped me with the three Rs. Sadly it was for the Amega so I can't hand it down to my cousens since Amega went bankrupt years ago and the PC took it's place.
I got my first mobile phone when I was 9 or 10 because I started walking home without my mum and she could ring me and rest her mind.
I got my first portable CD player at 11.
We had Satalite television since before I can remember.
I got my personal PC when I was around 14...
Guess what, I'm in my 20s.
No I don't see a problem with it. No I'm not antisocial. Yes, it has given me a boost in my career.

- Seeing kids with cellphones is a HUGE annoyance for me. It's just unnecessary. I got my cell a little over two years ago, a bit before I turned fifteen. I was the last of my friends to get my own phone, but I got a RAZR, which was all new and awesome and envied at the time. P:
I wasn't completely devoid of technology otherwise, though. Growing up, I did watch television and use the computer starting from a rather young age. I got a Gameboy Color (which I still use! I like it better than the Advance and DS) and Pokemon Blue Version for my ninth birthday, bought a CD player with my allowance when I was ten or eleven, and shared a Playstation 2 with my brother when I was eleven. I got my current iPod at fifteen and it is in great condition even though most people I know say they have gone through several iPods that have broken, and I am pretty sure I drop mine more often than anyone else. ^^; I received my first laptop a few months before I turned sixteen, because my dad had to go to Beijing for his job, and my mom, my brother, and I planned to travel around the world for about a year. I took classes online.
I'd like to believe that I am responsible with electronics/technology... they generally last me a good amount of time, and when I buy new ones I compare and contrast features and prices. I am usually either the first among my friends to have new tech gadgets, or one of the last stubbornly refusing to upgrade. XD

Hahah, just like me! I spent a lot of time playing with the kids in my neighbothood, my sisters and our dog. However, I didn't get a ps1 until I was 12 or something. I bought my used ps2 a couple of years ago with money I saved up, as with most of my games.

The only time i would get a kid a phone would be if he spends a lot of time in positions where he is away from his parents (school doesn't count). I'm saying athletic kids and stuff, or kids in clubs that deals with them after school hours and such. Then i would get one of those programmable phones with 5 buttons on them. Apart from that i don't believe a child should have a cell phone until they can buy one and pay for one themselves.
I got my first cellphone when i was 18 because i bought it myself. And i live on it. I work, go to school, and am constantly on the go and needing to get in contact with people.
As for mp3 players and game things, i think there's nothing wrong with any age people having them. If they enjoy music and games, why not? My only thing would be making sure my child stays up to par on homework.

I think it also depends on the situation. I mean, I live in Istanbul - basically New York, 20mil people, tall buildings, etc etc - and having a cell phone really helps!
I don't use it to chat, but if I run out of money, if I get my bag stolen, if I can't find a cab and I'm stuck in a place for a long time, etc... It just feels good to know that I could call someone if I need to.
And about mp3 players... Well, again this has got to do with your situation; again, in my city, if you want to go anywhere it's at least half an hour's bus ride / car ride. The distance between my school and my house was 1 hour. So I had 2 hours a day of bus traveling. Yeah, true, I could just look outside the window but... I have to admit, the mp3 player helped a lot!
That said, I don't think any kid should have a cellphone before the age of 16 - and even that is if they go out a lot and live in a place like I do.
Gameboys though... Yeah, maybe they do kind of make people less social but... Thing is, people who are incredibly social don't suddenly turn into geeks because they got a gameboy. I've bought basically every gaming system when I was a kid, and even now I buy all the ones that I can afford - I go out often and while there is a geeky side to me, I doubt it happened because of the gameboy.
A friend of mine, on the other hand, doesn't even get on his computer, ever. He has one - well, his family has one, but he never touches it. Just isn't interested.
If someone is not interested in games, if they're really social etc - they will not suddenly change in the presence of electronics.
That's what I think anyway.

I think a lot of children are getting more than they need. My younger cousin is like seven and she got a laptop. I only got my first computer that belonged solely to me when I went off to college--and that had a purpose. I need a computer to do homework up here. And prior to that, I always used the old family computer--the one that was on its way to the grave but still had a few years of use left in it.
Don't get me wrong, I love my technology. However, I think that there should be a limit.
A lot of people have more than they really need. I can honestly say that I don't use my ipod all that much. I prefer actually talking to people. Music is... music. And I find that I would rather focus my attention on conversation instead of listening to something that I could just as easily listen to alone. I take my ipod on the bus or on the airplane, but I don't usually carry it around on a normal basis.
There was a theory that I came up with when I was talking to this random guy about how kids need to stay connected to something--that putting in the earphones made them socially okay. The act of sharing earphones between two people created a way for the two to be connected to something and not fall into the deep, dark abyss of sitting there alone and twiddling one's thumbs. But really, it doesn't do this. You just sit there and don't talk to anyone. You're "connected"--but not to people.

What if your cellphone is in your bag? :o
I know what you mean, but it may make some people less social if they spend all of their time using it.
[p!x3Lz`] - I got a gameboy color a few months before the new one was released. e_e I use it occasionally, just to play Pokemon Crystal.
psyrien - Your seven year old cousin has her own laptop? Holy shit. I didn't even get my own (second-hand) computer until I was 16. Before that I shared a computer with my sisters. All three of us got our own laptops for university and college.
I agree with you, I don't think people need a lot of gadgets, or at least the most expensive ones. I have an iPod shuffle, but I only use it when I'm on the bus or working in class. Before that I had an RCA Lyra, and it was really. Both of them fell apart after a while, though.
I agree with your theory, too. It reminded me of the time I was sitting on the bus, and two girls sitting in a seat in front of me were sharing headphones. They weren't talking. Just listening to the music. I turn my shuffle off whenever I want to talk to my friends.

I got my first cellphone when I was 15. I envied other kids at school who had cellphones and they were treating me like crap back then too. Seriously, I'd still want to throttle them if I saw them again; I resent them that much. Ahem... For years, Mum wanted to believe she didn't need a cellphone, but almost everybody she knew insisted that she got one, so she took my cellphone (Which is quite old now) and bought me a new one.
I got a credit card two and a half years ago. I told my parents that I would like to have one, but they could say no if they didn't see fit. By some freak, they let me get one.
We got my first computer when I was 13. But it was mostly being used by my brother to play games during the first years. Then I got Internet two years later, and might I say, my world changed! Two years before present, we gave that computer to our uncle and got ourselves a new one. It's still the only computer we've got. As for video consoles, I never had any of those, though I'd like to. But they're expensive, and my brother is more interested in PC games.
And finally, my mp3 player... I had gone to Germany last year in summer and Dad found a mp3 player just for €40. He asked me if I wanted one, and being the mp3 junkie I am, I said yes. I sue thatmp3 player almost every day now.
