Okay, so I want to make trillions of dollars in space, but I can't build star-craft yet, so SURPRISE guess what I want to go to school for.

The thing is, I don't really know where to go. Does anyone have any knowledge on what courses will teach me to build a vehicle capable of launching into space? And does anyone know what schools have the best programs? What should my major be? What does it take to get into these programs? Because I don't exactly have a 4.0 and dazzling test scores, and I hardly have any extra-curricular activities.

I thought about putting this in Life Issues, because I'm kind of looking for advice, but I thought it was more of a discussion topic. So I hope it's acceptable for this forum.

Well, off the top of my head I'd say you'll need to take some maths courses, a lot of advanced maths if you're going to be constructing a vehicle of that nature... also some courses in engineering, like a previous person said, physics... um, you'd probably need to become a pilot if you're going to be piloting it...not sure what else. ^-^;

That would be so much fun to get into, btw! Sorry I can't offer much more help but check out NASA websites about requirements for that, and then do some searches on space craft construction and such, I know that some guy has a business he's going to use to start offering trips for normal people to go into space, so he probably has some information on what he did in his website...google space trips or something and it should come up with info on that guy. ^-^

There's a lot of feilds that deal with space study that I know of. If you want to go into building spacecraft, your best bet would probably be aerospace engineering. Also, like Colours said, there are astrophysics courses and programs available if you want to delve that deep into theory, but it might help you in the pursuit of a bettr vehicle.

If you're more of the biological person you could also go into astrobacterial studies or other sorts like that.

If you really plan on going to a school that is dedicated to Aerospace, your best bet would to be finding of a school in either Florida, near NASA, or somewhere in California, like Cal Tech. I know Cornell up here in New York, or RIT or RPI have fantastic engineering programs that im sure would specialize in aerospace.

NASA internships are also a good thing to look into.

You could always google schools too, that's what I did for nanoscience.

Ah! Nano science pwns!

And, uh... I was thinking something...

Oh yeah!
@ Delial: Richard Branson? Owns Virgin (including I think the record label the phone service and some other stuff that I don't know)?

Ah! If only I had his e-mail or his phone number!

@ tzubake: Thanks. I'll look up those schools.
I tried looking up NASA but I couldn't find anything that seemed helpful. I found a lot of stuff for tourists, and for grade-school teachers, and news about current operations, but I didn't see anything about internships.

I hope I get into one of these programs.

My brother wants to do the same thing, he's enrolling in Aerospace Engineering. You learn 'basic' engineering as well as as designs that are being used and/or tested for space travel. The university he's applying to has a few wind tunnels to test stress on a model as well as a connection to NASA for internships for its students.

I'd say some sort of technical school...

I don't really know though, I'm sorry.

Try that I guess.

Or do what I do! I go to Princeton Review, create an account, and then input all my academic records and preferences for schools (you would choose to major in Aerospace Engineering) and they'll spill out the colleges that are right for you that offers that major.

Wow, you're lucky to have found your calling already. I'm still debating over law and art (computer graphics/web design/game design, etc.)

Well, I hope the best for you and good luck with what you want to do in life! If you put your mind to it, you can do anything. As corny as that sounds. :P

The university is Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago (I actually attend there for Computer Science). The program is MMAE (Engineering), after the first 2 years each engineering student specializes in their section, for you that would be the 'A' in the department for Aerospace.

Here's a link to their Prospective Students info page: http://admission.iit.edu/mmae.php

I would have to say Physics and Engineering majors would be good. For those you'd need to take as many upper math classes as possible, as well as upper science courses. I found this link about Aerospace Careers, you might be interested in looking at it. ^^ I think the section on Aerospace Engineers is what you'd be most interested in. : D
