Well, I'm in need of some help and am not sure where to ask this following question; so mods, feel free to move this thread if necessary(sp?).

I'm considering starting my own site (no, not an avatar site)...and I'm curious as to how one would go about purchasing a domain name. I looked all around the net, but have yet to find an answer.

I may not have the right skills at this moment in time to be creating my own site; but if I've got a domain name in mind...it'd push me to learn how to do things quicker.

Anyways, help! D;

Discuss as well; ever purchased a site/domain name and created your own site? C';

I'm not sure...but you can dry google-ing up domain names for sale or something? I think go-daddy is a pretty big one, I see it allot. It should have purchasing options... ^^

I tried creating my own site, but I failed miserably. x']

I think it all has to do with what your site is going to be about.

For all domain names on any site you purchase it from; you have to pay a yearly fee? Is there a way one can purchase a domain name and only pay one fee; thus allowing you too keep it forever basically?

...if that makes sense. DX

i don't know...
You can always go with just having a free domain like from Geocities or something.

Yeah. You can buy a domain name once. But that's just the name. Usually websites and pages and stuff require monthly pay or something.

I don't really want to do that. I want a real domain name...that isnt' linked to another site. That way I have better control over it.

I'm looking to create a site that will hopefully flourish one day. C:

@Aero - Ah, I see. Well, do you know of any guides that may help me to better understand this?

I love your sig.

With that out of the way;

Unless you have a service provider thingie (which I wouldn't guess that you do) you need somewhere to host your files, give you some storage - they usually offer lots of other stuff too, forum codes, emails, etc etc...

That's what I thought until recently a friend of mine who used to host an artist site told me that I didn't really need someone to host my files, I could just upload them to my own server with FTP. I have used FTP before, but never for my own site, so I can't give you actual confirmation on that one, but if you're googling things, that might help.

Purchasing a domain name for ever is easy though - lots of people sell domain names. I think last time I checked one site was selling a domain name for ever for 70 dollars? I think.

Er, hope that helped you! Good luck~!
