Okay I made this forum to see if their is any body who actually buys those, other then myself... I ask this because today I stepped into borders and went directly to the "manga art how to" section to buy a new book when my mom said "Does it look smaller or is it just me?" I backed away and looked over the Art books. Wow I thought to myself It does look smaller. I then bought one of the books and left 15 minutes later wondering about that...
So anyways....
Do you own any of the books from the "How to Draw Manga" series?
If so, how many? Which ones?
Do you even use them or did you just get it for the costume and character ideas?
Last but not least, do you work on manga?
I'll start it off!

I've seen tons of these; I'm not sure which one you're talking about. xD;; Some of them are good, some are just....horrible. D:
The one I saw at Michaels was one of the really crappy ones; by...Christoper? Something like that. Anyway--that one didn't help at all =|
But at Mitsuwa, I saw a bunch of decent--amazing "How to" manga books, and those were really useful. I only have one, myself, and it's...somewhere in my room and I can't recall the name off the top of my head. D: It's a pretty old one, though.

Do you own any of the books from the "How to Draw Manga" series?
No, but I saw a lot in my university library, like eight or something I don't remember.
If so, how many? Which ones?
Look at the above post.
Do you even use them or did you just get it for the costume and character ideas?
I don't use them or even get ideas. It doesn't suit me much. Some of them doesn't look that nice(sorry, I know people have different kind of drawing but it's just my opinion)
Last but not least, do you work on manga?
No, I couldn't even draw much sadly.

- I don't have any books from that particular series, but I have several books that teach the same kind of thing, I think. They all cover the basics in various styles and in various ways. I've tried to use them mainly to improve things like the way I draw anatomy, hair, clothing...
I'm not a very talented artist, so I find that seeing the same kind of thing presented in different ways helps me to learn. ^u^

Do you own any of the books from the "How to Draw Manga" series?
Yup.
If so, how many? Which ones?
Two. How to draw manga: basics of character drawing and More how to draw manga: character drawing. (Not exact names but thats what they are)
Do you even use them or did you just get it for the costume and character ideas?
Yep, I used them. I also use the bases provided for my drawings. (Though I adapt the poses. The bases are used to make sure I get the proportion right).
Last but not least, do you work on manga?
Work on 'a' manga, no. I do draw in the anime/manga style as a hobby, though.

I can finally reply to this.. :). Yay! I tried last night, but for some reason, the message wouldn't go through. :(
Anyway.. I own both Compiling characters, and Bodies and Anatomy. While they're useful, they're not the most useful How to draw Manga books out there. I find the American made ones a lot simpler to learn from, as they contain a lot more reference poses, and are written with the beginning artist in mind. The Japanese How to draw manga books expect the buyer to already be familiar with anatomy.(Even the one based on that topic does.), and only go over mostly tone, and pen nibs. :(. Or if they do have poses, they're very difficult to draw ones. The compiling characters one only has one basic pose, and a few hairstyles and faces. It's not very useful. The bodies and anatomy doesn't feature standard poses, but ones that no one ever draws. :(. Other books I've rented from the library follow the same trend- they expect the artist to have previous experience. Even the one made specifically for beginners isn't very useful. It only discusses pens, and tones. No beginning artist wants to know about those. They want to know how to draw people.
I think that there's such a small section for the Japanese How to draw manga books now because people are realizing the same thing that I just said- those books are nearly impossible to learn from. :(
I don't use them anymore. They're of no use to me. I DO use the character costume encyclopedia, though. I love that book. :)
As for working on manga.. yep. :). I draw two webcomics. One is a Harry Potter doujinshi, and the other is an original manga titled Tsukiyo.

No, if I ever need them I put them on hold at the library. They don't really help me that much. Only one book has. I think it's called "Girl to Grrrl manga" Or something like that. It's really easy to draw, since it has simple steps that japanese artist don't share XD

I've seen some "How to draw" manga books, but some are horrible, like the ones at my school, that show you how to draw 'The gangster' person or 'the preppy' person, and not how to draw a face, or anything; and to top it off, they're colored like CG animes and stuff -head desk-.
My friend has a few "How to draw' manga books, but I never use them. My dad showed me some, but I gave them back to him so he could sell them on ebay. They don't really help me, and I like to learn from people on deviantart and my other friend who went to art college for a few years, and has godly art O__O;;

If I feel the need to learn a few new drawing techniques, I can usually find some decent spots if I just browse around online for a bit. Especially since whenever I look at someone's 'how to draw' book, I often end up really hating their style ^^

i actually dont own any but a friend of mine does and it's the how to draw Yaoi one. this one in particular is the best of the series, just because it teaches anatomy while you're learning to draw manga.
in my personal opinion most of the others in the series are not as helpful as to the how to draw yaoi book. even though there's nothing explicitly sexual in it. I actually learn from it o__o
And i dunt plan on making manga in futre...

I only have about two or three. I had a Ninja/Samurai one before, and I think the original or something. I have a hard time following insructions though, so I'm not sure how much help they were to me. :(
It did help me with drawing fishnets better though.

I have rented many from my public library for fun. (since they have amazing character designs on there.) The only one that I actually have is "How to Draw Yaoi," and that is only because my best friend got it for me for christmas. It was very helpful with anatomy and cloth foldings. It was great.
Although I didn't use much with it (since I am more a realistic artist) it was great to see some nice tutorials being used to help me draw.

My cousin bought me a how to draw Shoujo//how to draw romantic characters of manga. I only leaf through it and laugh at it sometimes. :p
I also own one book in chinese which I cannot read and only bought it for the pretty cover. *-*
If so, how many? Which ones?
Two. :3
Do you even use them or did you just get it for the costume and character ideas?
I use them to kill time. I think once or twice I used it for ideas. :3 But I think that was just to prove to my friend that chibis are little peoeple with big heads. >3<
Last but not least, do you work on manga?
...I tried to... Thrice. They all ended up in failure. I'm trying to start one right now, but I procrastinate too much. :p

Hmm...these books are pretty good and do hold interesting advice but I only have two from the series. I use them to help me with positions and such because sometimes I can't visualize how a character needs to be posed. The one I really need is about how to draw manga on photoshop because I get mixed up when it comes to the layers and such. ><; I thought that I'd be able to work out Photoshop on my own but I was dead wrong and most of the photoshop help books out there don't even has the answers I need. Personally I'm not working on a full fledged manga but I do draw my own comics and my friend and I have done one together *which is still going after three years. XD*

MasterChiefrei: There are lots of Photoshop tutorials online that are written by artists who do anime-style work. A google search should turn up good resources. Photoshop books tend to be more for photo-editing and things that non-artists would deal with.
