I guess we all know that there's no repeat threads aloud here. I hope I haven't made any, but considering that I haven't read through all the past pages, it's pretty much inevitable that I'll eventually make one, along with everyone else who doesn't check into every topic. I think that repeat threads are okay, if it's been a long time since the last thread on it was posted in. However, two threads about the same thing on the same page isn't exactly a good thing. Kind of pointless to have two active threads about the same thing.

Have you ever made a repeat thread? How do you feel about them? Does it annoy you when you see a thread with a topic that has already been discussed or could you care less? Maybe you even want repeat topics to be allowed?

As for necroing, I have seen a few people here do it. It's strange, considering that most other websites I've been on have hated it when old threads were brought back to life. Here, I don't mind the necroing. I've brought back threads a few pages old myself. After all, if you aren't aloud to repeat a topic, necroing is pretty much needed.

What is your opinion on reviving old threads? Have you ever necroed a thread? How old do you think is too old to bring it back? Would you rather see a repeat thread, or a thread a couple months old that was revived?

Just a note: This thread isn't about the actual rules, it's about discussing what you think. Just opinions. :3
Hopefully this isn't a repeat thread. Sorry if it is. ._.;;

Im not really sure what necroning is, so I am not sure if I have done it.
I haven't made many threads, and before I made a thread on the SF I made sure that the topic hadn't been mentioned before. I guess you could count making a quest thread a repeat thread, since there are many; but Im sure those are not against the rules ^^

If the thread is only a few pages old, I think posting in it again is fine. Once the thread hasn't been active for a month or two though it seems a bit odd to post in something that hasn't been touched in so long. I've necro-ed a topic or two in the Computer and Media forums because I saw in the Subforum Index that there were already topics about the subject I wanted.

I started checking those index stickies after I accidentally made a repeat topic about Horror Movies for Halloween ^^; Apparently there was one a page or two back.

I can understand making a duplicate topic if the other topic isn't on the front page but I think at least people should be able to check the front page for something they want to talk about. I do agree with the no repeat topic rule though, cause you will get a lot of topics about the same thing and it seems pointless.

i have accidentally made repeat threads a few times.

if it's me actually having missed something on the first page (which i have done a few times) it's one thing. But it's when i made a repeat topic of something that's liek 15 pages back it's another. How am i supposed to know what every topic is? ;-;

I really hate it when someone revives a thread.

Usually the topic isn't valid anymore, or useful. And usually the person posts something stupid, since only newer members really don't know not to revive old topics. Dx

Reviving a topic is only bad if it's a conversational sort of topic.
(e.g. Going back to last page of LI and posting advice for a user that left the site months ago. Or digging up old Fresh Meat threads...)
I really like the catalog of threads with specific topics in the Media forum.
Reviving those threads is much better than making a new topic.

Necroing isn't bad at all, making the exceptions Nescia said. I agree with you that repeat topics isn't a bad thing really. What's wrong with starting a topic a new? As long as it isn't a copy/paste of the old repeat thread why not make one.

Let me admit that I love necroing threads and I would do it all the time if it weren't for the consequences.
As for repeat threads... Well, I have made only two threads since I joined Menewsha. And I don't know what's up with "no repeat threads whatsoever" policy, to be honest. Maybe an excuse to keep their servers working?

Necroing threads is usually pretty pointless. I get cross with people I catch doing it intentionally because there's seriously rarely any reason to do it. If a topic is 6 months old, it's perfectly fine to create a new thread on the subject.
Which brings me onto repeat threads.

We get annoyed when people create repeat threads about a topic which is still close to the front of a forum, often on the first page!
but obviously we don't expect people to hunt the entire forum before posting, the first 5 pages is usually what I judge it by
A happy medium is usually what works best for everyone.

True, repeat threads can be VERY annoying, as is bringing up ancient topics. If something is way old, then it should stay dead and a new thread started. In fact, the old one could then be deleted for good measure. Just a way of cleaning up old threads :)

Hmm... is there any repeat thread in which a user has complained about the thread being a repeat and it being an annoyance?

Edit: Same goes for necro'ed threads.

Andre - I'm sure there are lots of threads where people have said, "This thread is a repeat." Because we've got Reports about it before! And I've seen people (usually the person who 'owns' the first thread) post to the repeat topic and say, "I already made this thread..."

If that answers the question? XD;

I try and look and see if someone has made a thread about it before I make one. And with necroing it all depends on what the thread is about and how big it was and ho likely there will be repeats of it.

I don't usually make threads because of that... And because I don't usually think that I have anything cool to post to people talk about it.

I think Menewsha is a bit too strict on the repeat threads, really. I can understand that no one wants to see the same topic 12 times; it pisses me off too.
But I think if one wants to discuss a specific aspect of a topic and there's already a topic just about it generally, it should be allowed.

For example;
If there's already a thread about abortion and I want to address the mental repercussions of abortion, those are going to be different discussions, now aren't they? It's neater to keep the discussions separate in my opinion.

As for necro'ing... it's stupid. If the topic is 6 months old, just make a new one.

I've come to a conclusion...

And that is that it's simply a matter of the moderators to handle the situation. If the thread is too old and doesn't have meaningful conversation in it then the topic would get discarded. And as for repeat threads if it's 2 on the same page then the last thread that was made will get discarded. Simple, no?

I usually check the page before I make a thread (the few times that I've made a thread in the General Discussion forum), or else I look in the indexes (Media, Books, etc.) What drives me crazy is that if it's old, I don't want to do anything... It feels like I shouldn't post, because I'm necroing.... But there's a link right there, so I shouldn't create a new topic, either. D:

since its barely chatty on here
bringing up a thread from a month ago. just seems like a logical reason.

Reviving a thread from a month ago is fine, it's when people go to the last page of a forum and revive dead threads for no reason that it's annoying. Why do they do that?
I caught someone doing it in fresh meat, posting 'Hi, welcome to Menewsha!' in threads from people who'd joined in March :/

I guess I've done necroing once. I don't think that it's such a bad thing. Yes, it is indeed needed if repeat threads aren't allowed.

I personally do not pay too much attention to threads that are repeated and those that are not. I have seen several threads that are all related to Christmas, and the gifts you want to give, the traditions people have during this season, so on and so forth. Frankly, it does not annoy me one bit. I mean, who cares if two people post a thread that are similar to the same thing? Especially if one of the post are near extinction? I don't.

i had made a repeated thread once...
its because of the other guy was 3 minutes earlier than me, so they had to lock my thread...
i was blur, i couldn't even edit my thread...it was rather dissapointing...
i really prefer if they'll allow repeated threads...
im mean, the rules are pretty tight..

i dont mind necroing..i do it sometimes too ( well, only in Mene )...
since i had to...sometimes i find it hard since we cant bump...
so the thread is left to rot...so necroing isnt something so bad in this site..
though theres a limit..i wont bring back a thread which is too old...
more than 2 months is considered old i guess...i cant tell, since there really isnt many threads been made...

I hate repeat threads, I hate rules against necroing. It doesn't make sense to me. And people say "if a topic is dead leave it, it's spam" but I don't understand how it's spam to post in response to the original post, if it brings the topic back into favor... I don't see wat's wrong with it.
