I have added all the chapters except 10 and the epilouge because my computer's word isn't copying...it's messed up. I don't know, but please help me by reading, and explaining how I should fix up my story. Thanks.
NOTE: Chapter 1 is spaced out my paragraphs, and the rest aren't because I'm to lazy!
NOTE2: Chapters 1&2 are edited through for the third time, but I have gone through 3-10. They are probably really bad with a lot of fragments and junk! Ewww!
Chapter 1
Chapter 1
So it started out as a cold, snowy day; everything was normal. Slidding out of my bed, I stood my body upright and walked out of my room, heading towards the stairs. I saw my mother and smiled at her, and she looked at me and smiled back. She has a lovely smileâher eyes glistened like the fresh coat of snow on the cold, hard ground.
When I got to the first step of the staircase, I stepped down with one foot, and I thought about something Iâd never forget that happened just yesterday. Just picturing Joseph getting beat to a pellet by Mike.
Joseph was fifteen years old, and he was six footâjust your average guy. He had a normal manly figure and had deep, blue eyes like the fierce, mighty ocean. He has been my best friend since the first grade, when I first moved here. He lived a block away from me on Cherry Street. He loved to read horror stories, and Joseph was the kind of guy people would call âGoth,â because he wore black more often than most people, but I didnât see âGothâ within him.
âGothâ was one of the biggest stereotypes in our school. If you wore black, youâre considered âGoth.â People hated Joseph and me because we wore black, and same went to our friends. It was something that needed to be resolved within our school, but it would take the most powerful of minds to figure a resolution. Why canât people just see that âwe are just like them,â and no one knew why, and it was a mystery deep within the walls of darkness that has yet to be revealed. The fear that surrounded the situation was building up each and everyday, fights after fights, and killing after killing. I knew there was one personâone person within our boundaries that could change the history of life.
Mike was a bully, a jock, and he was such a jerk, and his group of friends teased, shoved, and threw us around like a baggage of trash, like nothing mattered in there messed up lives. They thought they were so cool, wearing their designer clothing and living in their five story mansions. All theyâd do is complain about how everything is so wrong in their so-called, miserable life. Mike was the leader of the âpopularâ ones, and thatâs how we defined them.
Yesterday, Mike told me to go to Hell and take my âGothâ look with meâthe black and red that surrounded my hair. I told him, that doesnât make me âGoth,â itâs just my look, but being the messed up, selfish man he was, he didnât care about the way I felt. He went on about how he thinks I worship Satan, and I never go to churchâthat was not true since I have been going to church since I was a little girl, and when I die I would not go to Hell, Iâd go to Heaven.
When Joseph overheard Mike saying this shit to me, he knew he had to do something. He lost his temper and told Mike to stop, or heâd pay the consequences, and of course, Mike just giggled and laughed at him along with his friends who thought is was so mature and so hilarious to laugh along with him. A tear rolled down my eyes as I looked at Joseph, and I knew his eyes called out fear because they werenât the strong color they usually were, and I could see the dull, scary look blinking from within his pupils.
I stopped there on the step, just standing there as tears flowed from my eyes to the tips of my cheeks. I pictured JosephâI remembered him landing a fistful punch to Mikeâs right cheek. He was so brave. Then, I remembered Mike; his nose bleeding heavier than I have ever saw someoneâs nose bleed, and his blood was colder than a cobraâs shedding blood, being the evil, god-forsaken person he has been in this world. The look in Mikeâs face I will never forget eitherâmadness, the flicker of evil, and I shuttered thinking about it trying to expunge the moment from my head.
I walked one more step downstairs then thought of Joseph again. This time it was the worst scene I have ever seen him. Mike took a fist and threw it into Josephâs face. It hit him so hard, he fell to the ground. Mike was a football player and has been weight-lifting for several years now; he could plow people to the ground before a word can me spoken. I remember looking at him then running to his side to make sure he was fine. He wouldnât answer me, and I was terrified not knowing what would happen to him. For the first time in my life I felt a sense of fear. It was a horrible feeling to feel through the nerves of my body, and I felt myself boiling with pots of water left my the spilled tears of hateful actions. I have found out that I have feelings for Joseph, and it was like seeing someone close to me die except Joseph was not dead only unconscious.
I asked him again if he was alright, but he didnât speak a word, and it felt as though his voice will never be alive again. I couldnât keep back the tears, and they came spilling out like a mad river of fear and anger, and I turned to Mike who was laughing with all his friends; I didnât see how hurting someone this badly could make some laugh like this, and my eyeliner ran down my face as I exclaimed, âWhy canât you just leave us alone? If it wasnât for you this would have never had happened! Itâs because of people like you that make the world feel like life is coming to an end. There is no reason you need to act like this Mike, and I hope you see this through the consequences and let me tell you, you will pay. All of you will pay! Just remember, weâre just like you.â
I heard Mike get up and I turned to Joseph. I stared at him as he lay on the cold ground with a cut on the side of his face, which made him look like he was crying tears of blood.
I saw his eyes open as if my tears brought him life, and his pupils were back to normal, and the fear had disappeared from the world at this instant. We stared at each other, and by that time Mike and his friends left to go cause more trouble amongst people in the school. I looked at Joseph and he whispered, âKaddi, Iââ A short, brown haired girl ran towards us. It was Claire, and she had a worried look on her face, but who wouldnât at a time like this. Joseph stopped talking and glanced at Claire who was close to us.
âWhat happened?â she asked coming towards us closer and looking at Joseph and I, but Joseph finished looking at Claire, turned his head towards the ground, and his eyes shut.
I woke up in a daze to the strange feeling as if someone had bluntly smacked me across the head with a wooden bat used to play baseball, Josephâs favorite past time. It seemed as though I was amongst this dream that had never occurred in my life, but I hadnât known what happened within it. I laid there on top of my bed with covers over top of my body, feeling the warmth of my comforter wrapped around me, and Claire was sitting in my bean bag next to me as if we just had a sleepover. Looking over at her, I asked, âWhat happened Claire? Whereâs Joseph, and how did I am end up here?â
âKaddi everything is all right, and Joseph was taken to the hospital. Heâs in minor condition, but they say he may have some memory lost from taking the beating to his head, and the doctorâs are surprised his skull didnât break from that punch Mike threw at him. They say heâs a real survivor of it, and everyoneâs just glad Mike didnât give you a beating. You and I left early from school and your mother got out of work early to make sure you were okay because you had a fever a couple of hours ago, but it seems youâre fine now. You passed out at the school after Joseph diminished off for the evening.â
I stood there on the stair step thinking about what Claire had said to me that evening, and I knew now that it was my fault Joseph was hurt in the first place. I heard my mom coming towards the steps walking briskly as though she was in a rush for work. I turned around and looked at her, and she looked back at me and said very kindly, âKaddi is everything alright? I know you are confused about everything that happened yesterday, but everything will be okay, I promise.â
I looked at her with despair in my eyes and whispered, âMom, it was my faultâitâs my fault that heâs in the hospital!â
âNo itâs not. Let me explain, he is your friend, thatâs why he did what he did, and besides if it wasnât for that kid that was saying things to my dear daughter, nothing wouldâve happened to anyone.â
I stopped for a second. âHow do you know that?â
âWell your school suspended the guy that was teasing you, the one that punched Joseph in the face, and they made him tell what had happened.â
The thought of my mom saying his name broke me more, and I couldnât feel that angel above me that was supposed to guide people in the right directionâit was all gone. I thought for a second though, why would Mike actually tell the truth to principals, itâs never happened before. âHe did?â I asked.
âYeah, he did. So are you going to be ok at school today?â my mother asked.
âYeah, I think so.â I walked to the end of the staircase and looked back to my mother and looked ahead to the living room.
When I reached the living room, I walked towards the kitchen to get some breakfast, and I saw my little sister sitting on the couch in the living room. Looking at her, made me forget what had happened in the past day.
My sister was tall for age, and she was only ten years old, having light brown hair, which she inherited from my dad; she was a very small girl, only weighing ninety pounds, and I weighed a lot more than her. My sister was in fifth grade and went to the middle school, and she left for school later in the morning than me because there were too many people in our school for the middle school to use the school districtâs buses as well.
âHey Kaddi!â my sister said as if she was going to some amusement park for the first time.
âHi Brooke,â I said looking at her. âI am going to make some toast. Will you butter it when it pops out of the toaster because I need to go get ready for school?â
âSister, I can put the toast in the toaster. Just prance yourself upstairs and get ready.â
I looked at my sister and ran over and gave her a hug. âThank you.â
I walked back upstairs to get ready. My first stop was the bathroom where I brushed my teeth until they shined like the sun illuminating on the ground in the summer and combed my hair until it was softer than catâs fur. I stepped into my bedroom which was across from the bathroom and looked in my closet for something to wear. I picked out Josephâs favorite outfit. âMaybe if I wear this outfit, Joseph will remember who I am if he did lose memory,â I whispered to myself quietly. âMaybe everything will be ok today even though Joseph will be missing from my life.â
The outfit was torn up blue jeans that Joseph had written on and a black shirt that had a deep pink skull on it. The skulls eyes and nose were shaped like hearts, and I put on my black belt and ran downstairs.
I ran to the kitchen because the bus was already outside waiting, and I grabbed my bag that was sitting on the floor next to the garage door and threw it over my shoulder. My sister was in the kitchen with my toast, and I grabbed it, gave her a hug, and whispered, âthank you. Have fun at school today sister.â
I scurried into the living room, opened up the door after getting my converse on my feet and my jacket around my body, and I screamed to my mother so sheâd hear me, âBye mom, Iâm leaving now!â I pulled open the door and felt the shivering cold breeze hit my face, and ran to the bus doors which were open, waiting for me to step onto it.

I love the idea of the story so far, and I hope you will post more of it.
Don't toy with a book worm TT__TT ~!
As for things you could improve on...there's a lot of repition in the begining. I,I, I, try adding some ands to tie some of the simpler sentances together, and in some sentances the I can be removed completely.
If you want, I can edit this post and put the correction in quotes, so you can see what I mean.

Chapter 2
It was still snowing outside as I stepped towards the bus and walked up the stairs. Everyone stared at me as I started walking to the backend of the bus where Joseph and I usually sat. Did they all know what happened yesterday? I wondered what kind of rumors were going around the school, and I was so intimidated, but I kept walking. I could feel my face turning apple red, feeling as though I was having hot flashes. I held my head up high, looking past them at the wall as though they were scepters.
Reaching the back seat, I remembered that Joseph wasnât going to be here today. I sat down, and looked out the window at the cold, snow-filled ground, and I thought about Joseph the whole time. I wondered how he was doing in the dreadful hospitalâif he was okay. I didnât know if heâd remember what I told him the day beforeâor what he was to tell me.
I soon felt something hit my head, and I knew it was a piece of paper probably with some nasty saying inside of its crinkled self. I just ignored it because I knew someone was throwing things at me to make me mad, and all I needed to do was keep calm.
The bus stopped and I got up, we were at the school already. I sighed and headed towards the bus door, and I stepped down the stairs and began walking into the school. I opened up the school doors and peaked insideâeverything was normal. People were running through the hallways like wild maniacs, there were people huddled amongst groups talking about topics that were not even worthy to be talked about, and the football team threw the football over peopleâs heads as they played tackle football in front of lockers. If rumors and stories were floating around the school about yesterday, people wouldâve been staring at me as soon as I walked into the school building. Only the football team must know about yesterday, but they were too busy playing hallway tackle football.
I walked over to my locker to get grab a book and turned my body, and there they wereâall of Mikeâs friends standing there, staring me in the face, and I was terrified. âWhat do you want?â I said trembling.
They all continued to stare at me, and after a second, one boy spoke, âItâs your fault Mike is suspended for the rest of the year.â
âHow is it my fault?â I said with a blank stare on my face. Then the group and I turned our heads to see the most popular and prettiest girl in the school walking towards the group. Her name was Jessica, and she had blonde hair and hazel eyes, and she was Mikeâs girlfriend who wore eighty-dollar shirts and three hundred dollar shoes. She had the perfect body, the body of a model, and everyone took praise in her as if she was the most powerful elite in the world. I looked at her with hatred in my eyes, and said to myself, âI hate you all,â in the quietest whisper that couldnât be heard due to everyone staring at her.
Jessica walked over to me, and I looked at her. She looked at me and grinned, and she spoke to me for the first time ever, âSo I hear it was because of your boyfriend that mine got suspended, right?â
I looked at her with grief. âNo, he is not my boyfriend, just a friend. Besides if your boyfriend werenât talking crap about me nothing would have happened. Your boyfriend and his friends are all jerks. Who knows, you are probably just as mean.â
âWell you know whatâhold on, whatâs your name againâwell no one cares anyway. You better stay away from my boyfriend or I will destroy you.â
I stared at her and said something I never knew I had enough courage to say. âShut-up Jessica! I am sick of you. I am sick of your âfollowersâ and your boyfriend and everything else. You know youâre not as pretty as you think you are. You are a rude, snotty bitch.â All the guys were staring at Jessica surprised. They probably were wondering what sheâd to me next.
She looked at me astonished. I doubt she thought someone like me could say that to someone like her, but she is wrong. âWell I will leave now before another fight happens here. You just leave me alone and continue worshiping Satan.â
By then I lost it, I couldnât take it anymore. As Jessica was walking away from me, I dropped all my books on the ground. I ran up behind her, took her shoulders, and turned her around so she was facing my direction. I made a fist and punched her in the stomach. I looked at her and grabbed her again. I threw her up against the locker. She looked at me and yelled, âHelp! Boys help me!â
âShut-up!â I screamed. By that time all the guys were by her trying pull my body away from Jessica. This one guy pushed me away from her; I looked at him and pushed him. I ran up to Jessica, made a fist, and punched her poor, ugly face. She started crying like the world just ended. She looked at the guys and yelled, âWhy are you just standing thereâdestroy her!â
They all came at me in one bunch. I tried to run, but one of the guys tripped me. By now everyone in the school was gathered around, staring at the fight. Some teachers tried to get to the fight, but there was too many kids watching, and they wouldnât move out of the way.
One of the guys picked me up and threw me up against the locker. I cried for them to let go of me, but they wouldnât let a finger go. I was scared and all I wanted was Joseph. âPlease let me go, please!â I yelled. I fought and fought for strength, but they
wouldnât let get away from me. One guy held my back against a locker door, and about ten other guys strolled up to me. Jessica sat there laughing, but she sniffled now so people would feel sorry for her. Sheâd keep complaining about surgery would be needed to fix her face. I thought it was pretty pathetic.
I was still motionless, and the guys came up one by one. They punched me in the stomach and face until by whole body was bruised, or I was bleeding. I couldnât take it anymore. It felt like I was going to die.
After what seemed like forever, the crowd went away and I was left just laying on the ground. All my books were scattered all around the hallway because ignorant people were probably kicking them. I was tense. I couldnât move. The teachers finally got to me, and asked what had happened, but I had passed out before I could tell them.
I woke up and found myself lying in some sort of bed. I didnât know where I was. I looked around and found someone sitting in a chair. I looked harder, and I knew who it is. At first I thought I was dreaming, but I wasnât. âAre you alright?â the voice asked.
I smiled and tried getting out of the bed, but found out I had some sort of an IV in my wrist. I knew where I was, a hospital. I hated hospitals because when I was little I spent most of my young life in one. When I moved my body ached. I looked at the person again. âI am fine, how have you been Joseph? Are you ok? I have missed you so much!â I exclaimed.
He walked over to me and said in a sweet voice, âI am fine Kaddi. I have missed you as well.â He stared into my bright blue eyes and leaned over to me and planted a kiss on my forehead. âWhat happened? Who did this to you Kaddi? How did it happen?â
âIt was Jessica and the other boysâthe guys that are friends with Mike. I got pissed at them. I hit her first, what should I do? Will I get suspended? Are you suspended? I canât go another day at school without you Joseph!â
âItâs ok Kaddi. Iâm not suspended. The school knows whatâs going on. You wonât be suspended. Kaddi we have to put an end to this war!â
âWe do?â
Joseph looked at me and I could see the deep blue eyes I am used to seeing. âYes. They arenât going to stop calling us âGothâ if we donât do anything about it. The teachers donât want to get involved. We need to put an end to this and renew are status in the âfood chain.â We canât just let them take over us. We canât be followers the rest of our life. We need to show them there is nothing wrong with us. We need to show them we donât worship âSatan.â Most of all Kaddi, we need to show them we wonât worship them. We wonât bend over backwards to help them just because they have a smear of mascara on their there poor little face. We will not be the gofers for the football players who think they rule the planet because they are bigger and stronger than everyone else in the school. We have to put an end to this nonsense.â
âOk Joseph. We can do it together. This is the beginning of the war. The ending will be the story, passed down from generation to generation. The ending will be the peace surrounding our school.
We will make history. We will win this war!â
Joseph smiled and hugged me. âThe doctorâs said you could go home tomorrow. I have called my mother and your mother and told them that I am staying here tonight with you. I also forgot to tell you, your mother was here an hour ago, but she had to go home. She wanted me to tell you that she loves you.â
âThank you for telling me Joseph. Also thank you for staying with me tonight, now I wonât be alone tonight. We can plan out how we will do things. You know Joseph I was so worried about you. They said you lost some of your memory. I thought something really bad happened to you.â
âThey must have exaggerated a lot. I didnât lose my memory; everything that happened yesterday was just blurry. You donât have to worry about me Kaddi. I will always be with you no matter what. Donât you every forget that.â
My eyes glistened just like my momâs always did. I stared at him and moved my body over so there was room for him to lye down next to me. âI will always worry about you Joseph. Now come lay down.â So Joseph lied down next to me, and we both fell asleep.

Chapters 3-The End I haven't gone through and reedited them yet. NOTHING IS SPACED OUT RIGHT. I DON'T HAVE TIME TO EDIT IT. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT WHERE THE PARAGRAPHS BEGIN AND END. SORRY!
Chapter 3
Joseph and I woke up the next morning. Well I woke up before him. I sat there thinking about everything that has happened in my life in the past couple of days. I had fear deep within me that was growing at an uncontrollable rate. I didnât know what was going to happen next. I wish I could see into the future and find out. I looked on the bright side, Joseph will be with me. We could both fight everything together.
I laid there on the very uncomfortable hospital bed. Joseph was still lying next to me. I looked at him. He was beginning to wake up. âGood morning,â he whispered still half asleep.
I smiled at him. âGood morning to you, too.â A nurse walked shortly after Joseph woke up. Joseph got out of bed. I stared at him the whole time. I noticed for the first time since I have seen Joseph that he wasnât wearing black. It shocked me.
The nurse came over to my bed and said, âSo are you feeling any pain, Kaddi?â
âNo, not really.â
The nurse looked at Joseph and asked, âHavenât I seen you here before?â
âActually it was two days ago and yesterday,â he said giggling.
âThatâs odd, and you both are friends,â she talked as if she was the most confused woman on Earth.
âYea!â we both shouted as we sighed.
She looked at us and then turned around and stepped towards the door. She kept the door open for some reason though. Usually the nurseâs here
shut the doors when they walked out. I stared at the doorway, and I seen a figure of some sort coming in. It was my mother, and my face brightened, and I was happy for the second time. I smiled and looked at her. Then walking behind her was Brooke.
Joseph ran to the door to greet her. She looked at him and gave him a hug. âThanks for keeping my daughter company.â She looked at me and I smiled back at her. She stepped towards me and gave me a kiss on the cheek. âAre you feeling ok?â she asked.
âYea mom,â I said. I looked at my sister. âHey Brooke, how are you?â I asked.
âI am good sis. Mommy is going to take us out to ice cream later when you come home.â
I looked at my mother. âThatâs cool. Can we take Joseph?â
My mother looked at me and said, âSure sweetie.â Joseph just stared at me, and I stared back at him. Then I winked at him. He started to giggle, and so did I.
It was a weekend finally. That meant that Joseph and I had the whole weekend to plan out what were going to do. I thought about it until the nurse came. It was a different nurse than the last one I have had. I looked at her and she said, âWell Kaddi, the doctor said you could go home today.â
I looked at my mother and Joseph. They both looked happy. My sister even looked happy. Joseph looked at the nurse like he was waiting for something.
The nurse walked over to me and took the IV out of my wrist, and I got out of the bed and stood beneath the ground for the first time in twenty-four hours without being stranded to the stupid IV.
I gathered up my clothes that were sitting on a table next to the television, and I went into the bathroom to change into my clothing. I was happy to get the hospital night gown off my body.
When I was done getting changed, I looked at my mother and Joseph. We all left the room quietly and headed to the elevator. Once we reached the first floor, we walked outside to the parking lot across the street.
I looked at our car in the parking space. It was nice looking car with a red, shiny metallic look. The inside was better lookingâmade of leather seating. The car could fit three people in the back and two in the front. I stood there and thought about getting my driver's license next year, and that made me very excited.
We all got into the car. Brooke sat up front with my mother, and Joseph and I sat together in the back. I sat on the right side of the car; Joseph sat in the middle right next to me.
It was cold outside. The leather of the car seat was cold against my body. Joseph kept looking at my hand for some reason. I didn't know why, but I think he wanted to hold my hand then. I looked at him with a smile on my face, but I don't think he even bothered to look at me because he was to content with looking at my hand.
When the car was defrosted, my mom started driving off, and I was so joyful because I was going home, Joseph was alright, and everything was going to be ok. I just didnât know what was going to happen. The thought of school was startling. I shook a little, and Joseph looked at me. He put his hand on top of mine. I looked at him and smiled. I knew I loved him, but I never wanted to
tell him about it. I didnât know what he would think.
Joseph moved closer to me, and he took my head and laid it on his lap. I was so relieved. All the pain went away in an instant. It was like the barrier from reality to dream world filled up inside. It was like being captivated in some sort of dream, but your still in reality. Being near Joseph calmed me, and it was like we were meant to be together since the day we met. It was the most relaxing feeling I have ever felt. His soft touch against my lonely, cold body made me feel better.
The car stopped in front of my house in the driveway. The driveway was pretty small. It was paved though, but you couldnât see the pavement because it was covered with the slushy, wet snow. The house was tan and nice looking. We painted it last summer, so the paint hasnât begun to chip off yet like most of the houses around the neighborhood. The shutters of the house were dark green, and the window panels were white.
There is a lovely garden in front of the house. There are two bushes, one on each side of the door to get into the house. The door was white just like the window panels. I walked into the house with Joseph right by my side. My mother and sister were coming along behind us.
When I walked inside of the house I put my stuff that I was carrying on the couch. It was a bag of stuff from the hospital which contained: my tooth brush, tooth paste, hairbrush, hairspray, and all those other knickknacks.
Then I went into the kitchen with Joseph, and him and I got something to eat. Joseph had a
sandwich with ham and cheese on it. I had some leftover pizza from a couple days ago. It was delicious and appealing at the same time being way better than any hospital foods. After we ate we walked into the living room together to watch television before leaving to get ice cream.
I sat on the couch, and Joseph was right behind me; he sat down next to me. We turned on the television and watched a movie that was on T.V. It was a love story, and I sat there and thought about it--Joseph and I were watching a love story together. It was weird and cute at the same time.

Chapter 4
Around two o'clock in the afternoon on that Saturday, Joseph, Brooke, my mom, and I headed outside into the blistering cold to get some ice cream. I guess it was a treat for me since I was in the hospital for such a long time. When I walked out the door, I was trying to get my gloves on, but it wasn't working out to well. Joseph threw the gloves on the living room floor. "Forget about the gloves," he told me.
I looked at him; I was puzzled and confused. "Why?" He threw his handsome eyes into my eyes. Everything splashed with color when I felt his hand reach out for mine. A rainbow went over the whole world filling the world with luminous color that could brighten up even an old grouch. My mom was already out in the car, and I think she knew what was going on between the both of us, but at that moment I didn't really care what anyone said.
Joseph opened the door with his right hand because his left hand was holding my right hand. We walked out of the door holding hands together, and I felt so relieved. Something inside of me has poped open and created this whole new world. I was the happiest girl in this world. When we got to the car he let go of my hand and opened the door for me. This time I sat in the middle, and he sat on the left side of the back. When we were in the car and my mom was starting to drive off, he took my hand again. He looked at me in the eyes again, and he pulled me next to him until I was lying on his shoulder. Then I grabbed his other free hand.
Traffic was unbelievably busy at this time of the day, and it seemed like ten years before we
reached the Twittle's Dairy Supreme. The ice cream place was only ten miles away from our home, but it seemed like we'd never get there at this rate. When we finally got there, I sat up and looked at Joseph. My sister screamed, "Sissy, we're here! Are you ready to get ice cream?"
I sat up all the way and said, "Yes Brooke." Then I smiled. We got out of the car and surprisingly Twittle's Dairy Supreme was very busy for it being a cold day. I guess it was because it was the only ice cream place in the county that was open during the winter and summer. It was an indoor and outdoor one. During the summer it is converted to an outdoor ice cream place and during the winter is was inside.
Once I got out of the car, Joseph, my mom, Brooke, and I strolled into the ice cream place. We waited in line for about five minutes, and it was a lot shorter waiting in line for the ice cream than actually driving to the place. I thought that was horrible. My mom and Brooke sat next to each other in the booth, and Joseph and I sat together opposite of both of them. We sat there and waited for our ice cream to get to our table. I ordered a hot fudge sundae, Joseph ordered a peanut milkshake, my mom ordered some soft serve vanilla ice cream, and my sister ordered hard serve peanut butter chocolate ice cream.
About five minutes after we sat down the waitress came to our table and gave us our ice cream. It looked so delicious. Joseph smiled at me. I smiled at him wondering why he was smiling at me so nonchalantly. Then I went to take a bite of my ice cream, and the next thing I knew, Joseph dipped his finger into my ice cream. He planted
the ice cream right on my nose. My mom started to giggle, and my sister was laughing so hard I thought her face was going to turn blue. I didn't think it was that funny, but I glanced at Joseph and took some of my hot fudge and put it on my finger. I then put it on his nose. My mom laughed harder, and my sisterâwell I thought she was going to fall out of her seat. Joseph started laughing, and I joined him. "Umm--do you have something on your nose sir," I said laughing.
"Yes mam, but I think you got some white on your nose!" he said smiling trying to hold back his laughter. Then he bent over and took a napkin and wiped my nose off, and he wiped his nose off. After the laughter ceased we all began eating again. Every second it seemed like, Joseph would look into my eyes. He would just sit there and stare at me like I was going to disappear tomorrow. I think I was having the best two days in my life with Joseph.
After everyone finished the ice cream, we walked outside into the cold, and I thought I was going to get a brain freeze but I didn't. When we got into the car, Joseph held my hand again. Then he whispered to me--it was something I so longed to here in my life and hearing him say it made me drown in a hurt less pool of love. "Kaddi, I love you more than anything. You are my beautiful swan." I looked up to see his face shining so bright that I had to look away, but I fought that brightness because it was love calling to me.
"Joseph, you never knew, that all this time, I loved you, too," I said softly.
"And I always knew you liked me, but all this time I thought you'd never knew of me. I have
loved you for a long time, Kaddi. I didn't know how you would react to it, but feelings within someone need to come out into the world because life goes no where if words aren't spoken to the chain of love," he said.
I looked at him, and all his words lingered inside of me. It's like they were trying to find a place within my heart to settle. I thought to myself for a momentâhe said it; he told me that he loved me.
When we got home, we were so tired that Joseph and I crashed on the couch watching television. It was a good show but sleeping on that hospital bed drained me last night. Joseph was on the inside of the couch with his arms wrapped around me and his right hand was holding my hand. We both fell asleep until the next morning.

Chapter 5
My mom and sister woke up the next morning and went into the kitchen to cook breakfast together. I woke up to the smell of bacon and eggs. It was a heartwarming smell, but then I looked around to find Joseph still wrapped around me. I looked at his closed eyes. They were just as handsome as they were when theyâre open. My mom came into the living room and sat on the recliner next to the couch where we I was laying. She glanced at me, and said, "Good morning, Kaddi. Your sister and I are making breakfast for all of us."
"Thanks mom, that is so nice of you both. Was Joseph allowed to sleep over last night?" I asked her with a surprised look on my face.
"Yes, I called his mother and asked her. She said she sought nothing wrong with it." I smiled and looked at Joseph. He was still sound asleep. My mom turned on the morning news.
"We are going to skip church today because I have to get things done around the house. The house hasn't been cleaned for a week, and it is looking very gross," she told me.
"That's ok. Do you need any help cleaning today? I am sure Joseph and I can help you with whatever you need."
"If I need your help, I will ask you," she said with a smile on her face. I loved it when my mother smiled. It made me feel better inside.
My mom grabbed the remote control and turned the television to the "Sunday Morning News Edition." She stood up and walked back into the kitchen to finish cooking the breakfast. Then, I felt a big puff
of air blow onto the back of my neck. It scared me at first because I was watching an outbreak story of a huge hurricane coming into the Gulf of Mexico. After I finally started feeling it, it tickled a little bit, but Joseph started to move and turn his body so his face was towards the back of the couch.
Next thing I felt was the ground. Joseph must have heard me fall because he turned back around and asked me if I was okay. "Kaddi! Are you okay?" he asked.
"Yes," I said laughing. Then he smiled and started to laugh with me. My sister ran into the living room with her penguin pajamas still on. I was still on the ground just sitting on the ground, and my sister jumped over my head and landed right on top of Joseph. It scared me so much that I had to regain myself for a few seconds. By then Joseph was laughing so hard I thought his face was going to explode like a balloon. Joseph pushed Brooke off him, and she got up and walked to the other side of the couch and sat down.
I turned around and looked up at Joseph; he held out his hand and winked at me. I put my hand on his, and he helped me up to the couch. I sat right next to him, and a few minutes later my mom walked into the living room. "Breakfast is ready," she told us. We all got up and headed for the dining room where five plates were waiting there on the table.
Later that day Joseph and I went up to my room and hung out. Joseph found another pair of my pants and began writing on them. Then, we
began talking about our plans for school. "If we get 'rid' of all Mike's friends and of course--Jessica, things might be easier to handle," Joseph suggested.
"It won't be easy Joseph. They are all jocks--they play football! They are so rough, and they could out power us any day. We would never stand a chance just like before. We would need to get double the people on our side to defeat them," I explained.
"And so we can Kaddi. We can get people on our sideâwe can get people who have been discriminated and put down by the popular ones. Our school will become a playground of war. We need time to plan out our actions. We need to get our people together, talk with them, and set a date for this war."
I looked at him trying to gather up all his words into my head. "When are going to do thisâhow are we going to do this Joseph! You know, without 'them' knowing about it."
"We will have to keep it a secret, writing our plans on paper will be the only way. Someone really responsible will have to hold onto them," he said.
"Claire! We can get her to hold the papers for us. The jocks and preppies will least expect her to have them."
"Yes! Claire is very responsible, and no one would expect her to be holding the papers. I would have you hold them Kaddi, but the whole group is on to us already. I just don't want you to get hurt because thatâs the last thing I need. It was tough enough worrying about you when you were at school last Friday without me. I should've known something would happen. I would have stopped you from
going to school! I am just glad you only came out with minor injuries. I was so relieved to see you in the hospital okay," Joseph told me sadly.
"It's ok Joseph. It's not your fault. I promise." He smiled at me, looked up to the ceiling, and back down at me.
"Kaddi, tomorrow we will begin forming a group of trusted people. The next few days of this week, we will begin planning it. No one will know, and we must keep it a secret. We must because we could lose this war before it begins. We call war, not them. I must go thoughâit's getting late. I will see you tomorrow beautiful."
I stood up and Joseph stood up. He gave me a hug, and for the first time ever we looked into each other's eyes--he touched my face as soft as a feather would, and he gave me a kiss on my lips. My heart lifted up to the ceiling, and it was flying to the heavens.

Chapter 6
I ran outside to catch my bus that morning. Getting on the bus, I noticed Joseph sitting in the back seat. I was so relieved because I remembered last week when Joseph wasn't here; my life was Hell. I walked to the back of the bus where he was sitting.
"Hey Kaddi! Youâre looking lovely today," he told me.
I smiled and sat down next to him. When Joseph was there, I got nothing thrown at me; I was so grateful. A couple minutes after sitting on the bus, Joseph held my hand. We arrived at the school, and we got off the bus and headed into the building like nothing has happened that week. Joseph and I both went to my locker.
Standing at my locker, I got my books out for my first class, and I shut the locker door. Claire ran over to us. "Hey you two! I am so glad you both are okay! How are you Kaddi? How are you Joseph?" she asked.
"Fine." we told her in unison. I looked up at Joseph and waited for him to speak the news.
"We have a plan," Joseph said. Claire blinked in confusion. "We are going to gather a group, plans will be written, and we will fight those so called 'popular' kids."
"I agree, Joseph. This is a great plan but so suddenâbut good because just a day ago, some girl and guy walked up to me and called me a 'low-life' for no reason.â Claire had angry in her eyes that Iâve never seen there before. âWho will we be gathering?" Claire asked.
I stared at both of them and started saying, "Any friendsâanyone who has been called names
or beaten by them. We will get Travis to get his father's gun. It will sound the day war begins. We will sound it once in the school to tell people the playground of fists has began, and then another time outside to begin the war officially. It will be in the field behind the school. This will be dangerous--very dangerous, but it has toâno, it must be done. We must pay them back for all the pain in misery they put us through."
Looking at me, Joseph and Claire nodded. We agreed to gather a group of people or at least tell people where and when it will be held. It will be held on Friday this week, and it will be during and after lunches. We agreed to get everyone to meet on the court behind the school ten minutes after the last bell rings tomorrow. We will agree to not surrender or give in to this group because this school will go to Hell if we do.
I gave Joseph and hug and a kiss after Claire had left to go to class. I walked to my first classâscience. I loved science because I understood it very well. I went into the class and sat down next to Troy. Troy was another friend of mine. He was one of the two friends in that class that I had. I looked at him and said, "Hey Troy."
"Hey Kaddi! How are you? I was worried sick about you when I heard you got the crap beat out of you by the jocks. I feel so sorry for you and Joseph. That made five cases last week."
"I am fineâtell me about it, though. It's horrible and that's why Joseph and I came up with a plan. Meet us tomorrow on the basketball court ten minutes after the last bell. We will explain everything then. Tell Sarah, James, Jackie, Melanie, Travis, Michael, Matthew, and Courtney. Tell anyone else other
than the 'popular girls and guys."
"Ok Kaddi. I got it, but why?"
I leaned over towards Troy and whispered, "War." Troy looked at me astonished. Hey nodded and looked up to Mr. Banks.
*Ding, ding, ding* When I heard the bell ring, I knew the day was over. I ran over to the water fountain where all my friends stood at the end of the school day. I ran over and stood next to Joseph, Claire, Troy, and Jackie. "Hey everyone!"
They looked at me, and Joseph said, "Hey beautiful, how was the day?" He smiled at me and I nodded. Then I heard a loud bang like someone getting slammed into a locker. Startled, everyone ran around the corner of the hallway to see what was going on. I ran over there holding Joseph's hand because he wanted me close to him. Troy, Claire, and Jackie ran with us. I was frightened, and I didn't want to know what was happening.
"Please have mercy!" we heard someone saying, and we all knew what was going onâa fight! âNo!â
When we were around the corner we seen who it was. It was Mike's friend John beating on James. I started crying. "Why! Why another person! Why can't they just leave us alone! We do nothing to offend them, why must they offend us!" Joseph took my hand and brought my body close to his chest, so I wouldnât have to see the horrible fight.
"No! Please don't!" James said crying for his life. I could hear Claire crying, and the 'popular' girls were just laughing; it wasn't funny.
After about ten minutes the crowd went away, and we were left standing there. James was
gasping for air, and he was shaking like he was having a seizure. The teachers already called an ambulance to the school, and I ran over to James. Joseph tried to stop me, but it didn't work.
"James! Are you okay? James!"
"Kaddi, is that you?"
I stood there and tears filled took over my eyes. "Yes."
"I will be okay. I heard about the plans, Joseph told me. You guys can do it, I know it. I don't think I will be able--"
"James!"
Joseph ran over to me, but I couldn't look at anyone. I just sat there and cried till there was nothing left. I couldn't stand this pain anymore. "Kaddi!" Joseph yelled over and over again, but I couldn't find the strength to move my body. I just sat there beside James. I just stared at him until the ambulance arrived. Some nurse walked up to me and asked me if I was all right. I couldn't answer. No words would come out of my mouth. Joseph just told her that I would be all right.
Joseph sat there with me for the next hour we were at the school for questioning. Claire and the rest of my friends were there around Joseph and I. I knew they wanted me to be okay and stop cry, but how could you stop when your friends were getting beat to pulps for just getting something out of their own locker. How can someone just stand there and say that there's nothing wrong with that.
I finally got enough strength to look Joseph in the eyes. "Joseph--"
"Everything will be okay. I promise Kaddi. Don't worry about this. We will find a way--"
"It just keeps happening," I said through many sniffles. "It's never going to end!"
"We must show them what we are made of Kaddi. We will show them everything we can do. We are capable of defeating them." I looked at Joseph, clutched his hand, and fell into his lap. Claire came over and asked if I was okay, and everyone else followed behind her. Everyone was there to support one another in this war to come, and it made me feel like things would change for everyone no matter the price.

Chapter 7
My mom heard about the story, and I told her about the war that will take place this Friday when I got up the next morning. She nodded and agreed, but I don't think she wanted me part of it. She knew what I was going through, but she was really scared. She was in my place twenty years ago, but it wasn't that worse then. It has gotten worse. She said I would have to be careful. "Kaddi, I don't really want you to be part of this, but I know how much you need to do this for everything you have ever gone through. Just please; don't start this war because you can get into trouble. You don't need it, but if you want to go down for your groupâwell I would do the same thing. If you need anything just tell me."
I ran off to catch the bus after I told my mother about the war. I sat with Joseph, and just looked at him. He knew what was going through my head in that instant. I had that twinkle of fear set off in my eyes. He knew as much as I could feel the pain inside this broken heart. He knew everything, and that is why I loved him. He was the one who knew things before you could tell him. He cared about me so much. "Kaddi, when this war comes, I am willing to go down for you." I just looked at him. "No, I will go down for you! You have been down for me alreadyâand you choose to do that for me. I will fall for you this time Joseph." He just stared at me the rest of the bus ride to school.
After the last bell had rung, Joseph, Claire, and I met up. We walked out the back doors of the school to meet everyone on the basketball court. Today was the day the news would be spilled out to everyone. When we got there twenty of our people
were there already gathered around court. Ten minutes after we got there, the whole basketball court was full of people. Claire got Joseph a tall stool to stand on, so he could speak the news to everyone. I would be standing by Joseph the whole time. I planned to support him to the end.
"Everyone listen up!" Joseph yelled. "Today we are all here for a special meeting. Three days from now our school will change forever. This school will be the center playground of war! I know everyone is tired of seeing their friends or brothersâeven sisters being beaten for no reason because this group called the 'popular' kids! It's not right, and too many people including my wonderful girlfriend and Iâve been through our own experiencesâexperiences that are not pleasant to hear. We must not put up with this anymore. We will sound the war with a gun held by our own Travis. None of this will be spoken. We are not surrendering this war! We must win or this school could sink into the fiery place called Hell! Do you want that everyone!"
"NO!" the crowd screamed. Everyone started talking amongst him or herself; Joseph walked off the box, looked at me, and pointed to the box. I knew what he wantedâfor me to speak to everyone. Usually speaking in front of a crowd of people like this would make me nervous, but after seeing James, I just didn't care anymore.
I got up on the box and began my speech from scratch. "Tomorrow, we will meet here! You will come at the same time as today. We will go over our plan! We will go over who will be on the defensive line and who will be on the offensive line. These people are going down!" I looked at everyone feeling proud of myself for doing this, and then I tilted my head down, "We will do this for our friend James, the one who was beaten into the
yesterday." Everyone put his or her head down and prayed. "God, please watch over James, and this war we will begin fighting at the end of this week. Watch over our people and help us teach a lesson to our enemies. Make them realize that youâve created us equal, amen." I lifted up my head and stared at everyone. "If you will be in the war, say 'I'!" I screamed.
"I!" everyone shouted on the court screamed. It was like a mighty roar of a lion in the mountains of a desert.
"This meeting here is over! Meet here tomorrow for set-up of the battlefield! Remember, no word will be spread to anyone! We could lost this war before it begins!" I stepped off the box, and walked over to Joseph. He gave me a hug.
"That was amazing Kaddi. I love you so much!"
"Thanks! I didn't know I could talk in front of a crowd like that. I wasn't even scared."
He giggled and so did I. "It's because theyâre our friends."
I looked up at him and took his hands into mine. "Am I really your girlfriend? Did you really mean what you said out there?"
His deep, blue eyes looked into mine, and it took him a minute to answer my question because he couldn't stop looking at me. "Yes. I meant it. I love you with the up-most passion. You are my sunshine, the light that wakes me up every morning. You are my beautiful swan. You are the dove in the clear, crystal water gliding through the air like an angel in heaven."
I could feel a tear roll down my cheek, and I knew that was the most beautiful thing. "You really think that; you are my twinkling star, and you make me feel like a person. You are the best thing in my life." He hugged me close to him, and Claire came up to us.
"Whatâs going on, Kaddi? Are you alright?"
Joseph looked at her and winked, and she knew what it was. I would eventually tell her what it was exactly.
After everyone was gone, Joseph and I headed home. "Hey Joseph, can I use your cell phone." He nodded and handed me his phone. "Thanks." I said. I began dialing my home number, so I could talk to my mom.
"Hey mom, Joseph and I are walking home." I talked to my mom for the next minute, and I hung up on her. I handed the phone back to Joseph, and we walked home.

Chapter 8
When Joseph and I got home, we changed quickly into nice clothing, and my mother was going to drive us to the hospital to visit James. I knew Claire and Travis were going, so we would see them there, too. We ran outside and got into the car. We headed down the road to the hospital. Spring was beginning because I could see the grass showing.
Joseph and I got out of the car when we got to the hospital, and my mom told me she was going shopping, "I will be back in an hour!" she told me. My mom drove away, and Joseph and I walked up to the big building people called the hospital. It was twelve stories high, and it amazed me.
Walking into the hospital, I went up to the front desk and asked the lady standing there where James Hemming was. "He is on the third floor in room 311." She nodded; I said thank you, and we walked away.
We walked fast to reach the elevators before the door closed. When we got to the door, we had seen Travis standing there. "What are you doing in the elevator?" I asked surprised. Joseph was giggling.
"I got lost," he told us. I could tell he was turning red.
I laughed even harder than Joseph was laughing. "You are so funny." I stepped into the elevator and clicked the button that said "3."
He looked at me amazed. "How did you know what floor to chose?"
Joseph looked at him. âShe asked the lady in the front desk what room James was in, didn't you?"
"No, I didn't think of that. That's why I couldn't find him." We all went up to the third floor, and Joseph had his arm around me the whole time. Joseph stared at us and asked, "Are you both going out?"
"We are actually." Joseph told him. I nodded with him as well.
"Really, I had no idea." he said surprised.
When we got to the third floor, the elevator door opened up, and we stepped out. "James is in room 311." I said. We all walked, and we found room 311. We strolled inside pass all the nurses. I ran over to James with Joseph and Travis was behind us. "James, are you feeling okay?" I asked.
He looked at us, and nodded. "I am doing okay. I have just a few bruises, a broken rib, and a broken wrist. It's nothing major. I might have to have surgery on my ribs; the doctor here thinks they need pins and needles to keep them together."
"I'm sorry James," I said.
"It's not your fault Kaddi. I am glad you all came though. How was the meeting? How are you both?" James looked at Joseph and Travis waiting for an answer.
"I am doing well," Joseph told him.
"I am doing great, too." Travis said smiling trying to work the remote for the television hanging from the roomâs ceiling. He was so dumb sometimes, but that's what made his personality so funny.
"Kaddi was a great speaker at the meeting. She said we were going to win the fight for you James. I was so proud of her for getting up and speaking to everyone. There was
over eighty people." Joseph told him.
"That is so sweet of you Kaddi. You all are very good friends. By the way, Claire said she will be here in ten minutes. She called me here right before you came."
"Really, that is great," I said excitedly.
"So are you both going out?" James asked.
"Yes they are," Travis explained to James while trying to work the remote still.
"Really! I am happy for the both of you." We smiled and looked at Travis. "Travis, give me the remote," James said, "I will turn the television on for you since you can't do it." We all started to laugh hysterically.
âWhat?â he asked. âThis is a confusing remote. It's not my fault.â
We heard footsteps walking into the room, but we thought it was just a nurse until the person came into view; it was Claire. I got up and ran over to her. She gave me hug, and she came over and started chatting with everyone.
"Today was some meeting Kaddi."
"Yes it was, but tomorrow will be better."
"What is your plan?" James asked.
"We are going to have a defensive line and offensive line. The strongest of our group will be on defense and the strong will be on offense." I said.
"Why are the strongest on defense?" James asked again.
"If the other side gets through the strong, we will save our strongest people for the rest of the fight. See if the other side wipes out our offense, they will be weakened a little bit giving our defense
a better chance."
"I see, that is a great plan, donât you agree Travis?" Claire asked.
"Yes, I think that will work." He nodded and looked at me.
I looked at Joseph who was staring at James. "That is a great plan Kaddi!" Joseph told me.
"So when are you getting out of here, James?" I asked.
"They said I might be getting out in a few days. They want to make sure nothing happens to my ribs before they sent me home. I have really bad back problems in the future even resulting in never walking again." I stared at James, and I noticed for the first time that it was awkward seeing him lying on a hospital bed. He has been my friend since elementary school, and I never thought I would have to see him like this. There was no âpopularâ or âGothâ kids. I sat there and thought about this for a long time and come to think of itâelementary school is when Mike and I were best friends, and it all seemed to have faded away from the world. One summer youâre off school and the next year you hate each otherâs guts. The world will crumble before it begins.
I woke up the next morning to my alarm clock. I was having a good dream, too. I was having a dream that everyone was a friend, and Joseph and Mike were close. It was a crazy dream thatâd only come true in heaven.
I got dressed, ran downstairs, and threw on my backpack and ran out the door. My bus was already waiting for me. I walked to the back of the bus and sat with Joseph. I looked at him as I sat down. "Hey Joseph, how are you this morning?"
"I am doing well. My lovely Kaddi, how are you doing on this fine morning?"
"It is fifty-five degrees, and we have another meeting tonight, I am excited for the dayâwell the day after school ends!" I told him.
"Are you ready to speak at the meeting today,
sweetie?"
I stared at him. "What do you mean?"
"Well it was your ideaâyouâre going to tell the people."
"You can help me if you really want to!" I said nodding my head.
"Nope, I will listen and watch you."
"Ok, I can try," I told him nodding.
The next day, we got off the bus when we got to the school and walked into the building. "Joseph, I was thinking, we should start war tomorrow. I think our people will be ready."
"We will see," he said. I nodded and walked to my locker. I got my books for my first class out, and gave Joseph me a kiss, and I walked away knowing that he was my guardian.
I went through the day as normal until it came to lunchtime. Our school was different than most schools. Everyone had the same lunch because our cafeteria was big enough to fit the whole school inside of it. Lunch was always interesting, but today I had this feeling it wouldn't be good. I sat down with Joseph and everyone else. The cafeteria was split into two halves by the people. There were the "Goths, emos, and want to-be people," which was we, and there were the âpopularâ people, which was Mike, Jessica, and all the other asses. It was ridiculous. Some of our people associated with them, and some of them associated with us. I personally would never associate with them even if my life depended on it.
I sat down after getting my lunch, and I began talking to Joseph. "So tonight will be interesting right?"
"Yes it will." Troy sat down next to us with
Claire. I always thought the two of them were going to be together someday.
Troy looked at me and asked, âYou said tonight, same time as yesterdayâright?"
Claire looked at him and said, "Yes Troy, same time." I looked around and seen someone from the other side marching their way over to me. I caught a glimpse of who it was--it was Dannie, the third most "popular" jock in the school.
"So I hear you want to start with us Kaddi!"
I looked around. Joseph looked at him and stood up, and said, "So you come across the line to bother her. Get the hell away Dannie."
"You don't ever get in my face like that Joseph!" Dannie shoved Joseph towards the lunch table.
"Don't ever get in my girlfriend's face like that again--you got it!"
"I don't think it's going to end like that. You wait--" Dannie told him.
When Dannie was back over on the other side I stood up and yelled at the tables on our side to shut-up. "Everyone come crowd around here." By that time the whole other side was looking at us. I tried to be quiet, but loud enough that everyone could hear me. "Everyone we can't wait until tonight because they found out! I don't know how they did, but we must begin! Troy, you take a group of twenty people and be part our defense! Claire, you take the rest of the people and be the offense! Travis, sound the war, we must attack now!"
Joseph kissed me and hugged me tight. "That was great! I will be on offense; you go back to the defense with Troy!"
I stared at him like no tomorrow will come for the both of us. "Ok, I love you Joseph!"
*Bang, bang!* Everyone ran around like dogs without a leash. I ran to the doors that led outside the school. I grabbed the door handles as fast as I could, pulled the door opened, and everyone ran outside like a pack of wild foxes running outside into the wilderness. I could see Travis with gun, and I was really scared. The "popular" side ran outside beating anyone on their way out. Some girls stayed inside because they were wimps, but most all the guys ran outside to begin this fight.
After almost everyone was on the side field waiting for it to begin, I ran outside with the last of my people. I stood up in the middle where Jessica and Dannie were standing. "You guys are going to Hell!" I screamed so everyone could here me.
*Bang, bang!* The gun sounded off and the war began. I stood there as my people ran past me like mad hawks.

Chapter 9
I stood there watching all the people fight. Our defensive line was in back, and I stood there in between our two lines of people. I could see Joseph in the distance fighting Dannie. I was frightened deep in my heart, and I didn't know what move to make next. I looked behind me. "Defense, stay back here until they break through our offense! Be ready to fight!"
I seen Joseph go down, and he was bleeding. I picked up a big stick that was lying on the ground and plowed through the people, fighting to get to Joseph. When I got to Dannie, I stared at him. "What the Hell did you do to Joseph?"
"He is a wimp!"
"No he's not! Damn it, youâll never learn will you!" I whacked the stick across his forehead, and Dannie flew to the ground. I thrust the stick into his stomach to make sure he was going to stay down. I came to Joseph who was laying not that far away from Dannie. I touched his face, and stared down at his soiled body. "I didn't know it would end like this," I whispered. Tears streamed down my face, and Joseph took my hand. "Joseph--" I began saying.
"Kaddi, don't worry about me--I will be okay! Go fight!"
"Noânoâno! Joseph! I can't do this without you! By then all the teachers were around trying to stop the fights, but they would just get hit, so they hung back on the side of the field. Some teachers were crying, but do you think it would stop us from doing what we were doing. Other teachers were yelling at all of us to stop fighting. "Stop you animals!" No one was going to stop; this was the time to fight for who you were.
I ran around knocking people down with my
stick I was carrying around. I walked right to Jessica. "So how is my friend's face doing? Unfortunately for you, after that shit, I was sent to the Hell hospital."
"You made indents in my face you Goth girlâyou and your other Goth friends have no life! You know we will always be on the top."
"You are not getting the point Jessica! We are equal--there's no top of the food chain! Here's the bad news: we are just like you! There is nothing different between you and I! Get it now or damn it or just fall over and go away."
"Well we will find that answer out." She got out her cell phone and dialed a number. I looked at her and threw the stick in her face. She fell down, and I picked up the phone.
"Hello!" the voice screamed. "What's all that noise?" I recognized the voice from the startâit was her wonderful boyfriend, Mike! I hated him so much! I picked up the phone. Jessica laid there on the ground. She had a cut across her forehead where the stick hit her face. You deserved it, I thought to myself.
I picked up the phone and began talking, "Hey buddy!" I yelled into the phone.
"Jessica, what's going on?" he asked.
"Jessica, you think this is Jessica! No Mike, it's Kaddi!"
"The Goth chick! I am expelled because I kicked your boyfriendâs ass to the moon!"
"You donât even know where the moon isâwhatever. War is on and your girlfriend is down! You think your so hot nowâI don't think so! Do you think I am happy? Yes I am! Well talk to you later!" I hung up on Mike and threw the phone on Jessica's chest.
I ran back over to our defensive line. I knew
my head was bleeding, but it didn't bother me. I went up to Troy, and I told him that our offensive line was doing great. "I think they might surrender!" I screamed over all the noise from the fighting and the teachers screaming.
I heard a really loud car pull up in the field. When the person stepped out of the car I noticed who it wasâMike! "Why is he here?" I screamed. Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at him.
He got out of the car and yelled, "Where is she? Where is Kaddi?" By then Joseph was trying to gather his strength and pull himself up to his feet. I ran behind the defensive line, and I hid there.
"Duck down Kaddi!" Troy told me. Mike started walking around the field. He noticed Joseph, and he pushed him back down to the ground.
"Watch it wimp! I am trying to find your girlfriend! She is a bitch!" Joseph got back up and jumped on Mikeâs back. He began to scratch his face, and Mike was fighting to get him off.
At that moment I knew I must do something. I yelled, "Defenseâattack him, now!" I ran out from behind and everyone followed me holding sticks in there hands. "Joseph! No! Leave him alone! Joseph!"
"Kaddi! No Kaddi! Go back, you don't stand a chance!" Joseph yelled at the top of his lungs. Joseph fell off Mike's back and landed on the dirty ground. Mike ran right towards me at full speed. The teachers still didn't know what to do, but I did.
"Attack!" I screamed to my line. All my people ran ahead of me with fists and sticks out, ready to beat the invincible Mike! Five people
actually got a fist at him. I pulled out my rope and told Troy to take the other side. "We are going to run up to him and trip him!" I said. "On the count of three, move right and I'll move left. Get the rope close to the ground." We ran full speed towards Mike, and I bent down more.
"Oneâtwoâthree!" Troy and I let the rope loose, and Mike tripped right over it. I thought it was funny. All the people that were left began beating him. The remaining "popular" kids ran over to help him, but they couldn't get through our group that easily.
"Do you surrender?" I yelled.
"I don't think so Goth chick!" I walked over to him and stood on his back.
Joseph ran over to me and said, "Kaddi, just leave him alone!" It's like Joseph was scared, and it scared me.
"Hey Goth chick, you heard your wimpy boyfriend!"
"Shut the hell up!" I got off his back, and I allowed for him to stand up.
"Just stop this war!" he said. "Youâre never going to win. Just give it up!"
"We are not giving up!" I yelled. I looked around, and there were all the "popular kids. All my people were standing behind Joseph and I. Mike's people were standing behind him. There were some people lying around the field. Some were seriously hurt, and some were dying. It was so sad to think about.
I stood there staring at Mike. I awaited his next move. I wanted to say something to him, but he threw his hands into his pocket and clutched onto something inside. Joseph looked at me. "What do you think is in his pocket?" he whispered.
"I don't know." I said confused. Mike took out the item, and it was a gun. I was shocked, and I almost fainted there. He began talking; "Just surrender, or you will see no future with your boyfriend!"
The teachers realized what it was, and they began shouting, "Put down the gun!" One teacher ran inside probably to call the police.
"I will not put down the gun until they surrender!" he screamed to the teachers. "Besides, the people that expelled me for beating up that wimp over there should die, too!"
Joseph took my hand and whispered, "Kaddi, we must surrender, or we will get killed physically."
"Joseph, we said we wouldn't surrender this war! I want the people to choose!" I turned around and screamed to my people, "Do you want to surrender to them?"
"No!" they shouted.
"Let's go with it then!" I screamed. "Attack them!" Joseph was still hanging onto me.
"You made the best decision you could ever try to make."
"I know." I watched five people get shot and fall to the ground. I began crying. Joseph ran over to help some of the people who were down. Mike walked up to me.
"So do you want to give up or die?" he asked me. He pointed the gun directly in my face. "It's about time you die from this world anyways. People like you don't deserve to live." A tear rolled down my cheek and my eyes began swelling with water. "You are crying for that loser boyfriend that you have. Why would you want him anyways?"
I looked around for Joseph and when he
noticed me, he stopped what he was doing and ran over to me.
"Well since you killed my girlfriend, I am going to kill you." I knew my life was over then and there. I knew I would never see Joseph again.
"No!" Joseph screamed so loud. "Don't shoot her!" he screamed louder. "Please, shoot me insteadânot her!"
"Joseph, no!" I cried falling to the ground on my hands and knees.
"Will do!" Mike pointed the gun at Joseph and shot at him. At that point in time I knew a piece of myself brokeâshattered from this world. Joseph fell to the ground. Mike put the gun back into his pocket, and the fighting ceased. All the people that were left got up and crowded around Joseph including some of the "popular" people.
I ran swiftly behind Mike, grabbed the gun out of his pocket, and pointed it at him. "You hurt him! You deserve to die! How could you do that? I hate you so much! Just like the first timeâyou hurt him, and now youâve done it for the second time. What do you have against us? Tell me now!" Joseph looked up crying.
"Kaddi, put down the gun! Don't do it, it's not worth it! Please, I am begging you!" Joseph screamed. Troy ran over to me and grabbed the gun. He ran it over to a teacher who was crying. Troy came back over to me. Everyone began crowding around Joseph and Troy looked at me.
"Kaddi are you alright?" Troy asked.
"No!" I began running to Joseph. I broke through the crowd of bodies, and I seen Joseph lying there. I could see where the gun shot had pierced into his skin; it was right near his chest.
"Kaddi, I love you! Don't ever forget that." He looked into my eyes the way he always did.
"Why does it have to end like this? It's my faultâeverything is my fault. I deserve to die, not you." I said to him.
"They will always be tough, and nothing
will change. It's not your fault Kaddi. I promise none of this is your fault."
"Don't say that Joseph! We will be winners. If Mike wasn't here, we would've won."
"Well then we are winners." Joseph began closing his eyes.
"Joseph! Joseph! Joseph!" I shook him a couple times, but he was gone. "No!" I punched the ground. Troy, Claire, and some teachers ran over to me.
"Kaddi!" Claire said. "Kaddi!" she looked at me. I couldn't find the strength to say anything. Joseph laid there on my lap, and I realized that I was in the same place as before. I just sat there staring down at Joseph. No emotion was going to show and nothing was going to come out.
