Hello! =)

I'm currently working on a new writing project that will eventually be an online comic. That was the whole point of the original plot. My question is, should I write the story in a script format or book format? I started writing it in book format, but after I started thinking about it, I kind of got myself in a corner where I'm not quite sure which way would be best.

A book format allows me to ease into the plot.

A script format lets me focus more on the characters than the world around the characters.

I'm more experienced in the book format than the script one. I might spend too much time trying to get the format to look correct. But, if I can get the first draft finished in a script format I can get the second draft done more quickly and then my friend can look it over and tell me what would and wouldn't work in a comic.

If I do end up going with a script format, can I get some tips on working with that sort of format. I've heard of programs that make script writing really easy, but the only ones I've seen are too complex or are too expensive.

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated! I should decide this soon or I'll never start writing it. xP

I'm working on a web comic of my own right now and I'm doing quick sketches of all the pages and then adding dialog to the pictures. I find that if I try and wright out my dialog before I make up the pictures I get to the point were my characters are standing around for 6 pages just talking and it gets really boring for the reader.

thats just how I see it, sorry I can't be of more help.

Since it's going to be a comic eventually, I think you're best off writing in script format and using something akin to "stage directions" for your actions. Not only will it go faster, but it will save you from wasting time with narrative that will never be seen in the finished project. Think of your comic's script just like you would the script for a movie or a play - it's the words and ideas that go with the images you need to create, not the images themselves. That gets added in later when you're drawing.

Don't stress yourself out with fancy formatting for the comic script, just write in a way that you can go back later and understand your ideas. If you spend too much time worrying about your formatting you'll lose all the fun of working on a comic and it just won't be worth it at all.

Still, the fact that it will go faster and give you more time to work on the actual comic outweighs the fact that you haven't worked with it before.

Good luck. :)

Thank you for your help! =) I appreciate it, and will attempt a script format for writing this story. I totally and completely forgot to mention that I'm not going to be the artist of the comic. That's going to be the friend that I mentioned in my first post. I couldn't draw myself out of a paper bag, hahah. But I do want to learn how to panel so maybe I can help story board and like Chibi suggested, sketch as I write.

Thank you guys again for the suggestions! <3
