Lol it is a lot of fun. :P It's like rp-ing but with rules and in person. 8)
Basically, the DM is the one who decides what you encounter and plans multiple options for what can happen to you depending on how you roll. Try reading through the wikipedia entry for D&D. It's quite informative. <3 Too bad we don't leave near each other or we could play. Though I'd love to maybe get an online game going here. 8)
Ummm yeah....the number he set for me to hit the griffin was like....I dunno...something like 1800+ out of 2000. He handed me like 40 dice. It wasn't even supposed to happen, I just got lucky haha. As a player, I made the decision to shoot at it. I could have kept walking or done something else. But if I rolled lower then I probably would have missed and it would have disappeared from sight. Or I could have hit it and had it land on me. XDDDDDD
But it was soooo funny cause he was like, "Holy SHIT! That wasn't supposed to happen!!!!"

I'm with you TK. I don't casually look at the G.D. anymore overall.
That sounds awesome though Broken! I kinda did that once, but it sort of killed the campaign before it got started.
All our characters were kidnapped, and duct taped to chairs, but the Gm sort of...forgot...that my character was a Metis werewolf, so when unconscious he reverts to a half and half form. And second, he had the giant size trait, so he was something like...fourteen foot tall. He didn't stay in the duct tape very long, and then he rolled really well a second time and...obliterated our captor.
Edit: Fixed some of my capitalization so my first sentence made more sense.

Kukon - Yeah it was a group of people I knew in college. :3
Nightgaunt - That's pretty funny. My same DM was playing with another group and they were having a pretty confusing battle underneath a giant storm, one of the players decided their action would be to hang out in an underground cave. Well the DM forgot he was down there, rolled the dice, and announced he had been struck by lightning. The guy was like "But I'm underground!" So the DM, (not really wanting to admit he made a mistake) told him "well it made two right angle turns and now you're dead."
Hey congrats on your modship...I was checking out the names and yours was the only one I didn't know so I post stalked you and saw my name in the post lol XDDD
Trinny - Hi hi <3

 Thanks Broken! I was surprised as hell when I saw the invitation pop up in my PM's.
That sounds hysterical. XD Maybe there was a vein of highly conductive metal in the cave? Poor sod. That must have been one really a pain in the bum to make a new character after.
I've only ever lost...hm. I think I've only really lost one character. And that was the first game I played them, which bit pretty hard. I was playing a vampire and he woke up so low on blood points he frenzied, which wouldn't have been so bad if he hadn't latched onto a werewolf, who turned him into a smear.
I almost lost another character when he got almost bisected by someone, but another character slapped him with a heal potion almost the same second so he nearly died and then healed all in about the same moment.
