@kat - a cinemanga is exactly what dani said. they take still images from movies/tv shows and add speech bubbles. i even see hannah montana and high school musical cinemanga at work. (but the simple life one is much worse. D: )
@dani - it's tokyopop. TOKYOPOP. T_T
that guy better win over this ridiculousness. technically, that's art. in his own collection. it's not even like he was planning on selling it.
under the prosecution's thinking, i could be arrested for owning wild rock. it's ridiculous.
also, thank you for inadvertently making me read neil gaiman's blog, where i link-jumped to find the coraline mystery boxes and someone on livejournal who made a hilarious comment about edward being a thirteen-year-old girl in midnight sun. XD
also, i am rereading sabriel. YAY ABHORSEN TRILOGY!
ps. read this article. it is lol-tacular.

@Leenie: 'Just My Luck' Could be considered bad too, even though it's not. T_T This is why I don't order books or manga through the mail if I have a choice to buy it in a store or convention.

Yeah and they're only charging him for some of his collection. 20 years for a handful of books (well book-type), I don't like the road this is going down. T_T

@kitami - teehee, thanks. i put quotation marks around it cause i forgot about putting it in the box. :x
and that is exactly why i linked the article. i figured most of you guys would get a kick out of it if you've read twilight. :]
@dani - seriously some of the stuff on my hard drive is reallyreally bad. XD
apparently what he's getting prosecuted for is having child pornography, but it's not, because it's art with fictional characters.
of course in gaiman's blog he posted about a judge ruling that fictional and cartoon characters were people, too. but then they have human rights. HUMAN RIGHTS FOR FICTIONAL CHARACTERS. the law is getting out of hand. so we support the CBLDF, yes?
and the only places i buy manga are at work and cons (mostly) because they're cheaper than getting it online.
they aren't even charging him for some books, but some panels in a few books. i really just want to go and smack the prosecutors upside the head. just for being that retarded.

@Leenie: You know what...
@American Government: Family Guy - Stewie. Prosecute that first please, because that IS a fictional child meant to be one year old. Not just a fictional character that is "18" (according to the writers) but looks like a child. Hypocritical.....
Okay, I'm stopping before I hit something. I'm going back to where it makes sense.

I'm not part of this conversation, but I just want to butt in and say that that's really fucked up. xD
I mean, drawing child pornography is creepy and wrong, but jesus christ, fictional characters do not have rights. D: They don't exist.
Unless you're drawing a real person, your subject has no rights.

Welcome to all of the people who just joined! This is a really fun group-- I hope you like! :)
@Kita: You're right! That is more than most murderers will ever get. In the United States, at least, just under half of the people who commit murder are ever sent to prison. Moreover, the average time served for those convicted was eleven years and four months as of 2003. If you're interested in the catalogue of discrepancies between sentencing for say, murder and rape, as opposed to drug possession and 'obscenity' in the U.S., I'd definitely recommend reading Reefer Madness by Eric Schlosser.
Strangely, this kind of thing wouldn't be what I'd expect from Australia. I'd always viewed Australia as somewhat more laissez faire-- almost a live and let live kind of environment. The U.S. government is historically more in the business of attempting to enforce one brand of moral theory. It will be interesting to watch this play out.
Neil Gaiman has blogged about both of these cases a fair bit recently.
I think that the bookish are usually pretty staunch defenders of freedom of speech and expression, regardless. On top of that, a good portion of literature takes on a highly philosophical bent. Those things combined, I think that obscenity laws will always be an interesting point of debate for our kind.
I'm a history nut who is pretty into the birth control movement in the U.S., therfore pro-Margaret Sanger and very anti- Comstock. Because of that, I become weirdly titchy over any kind of attempted censorship. I'm from the "You Give Them An Inch" camp.
Would you guys consider this a case relating to censorship?

I updated my list.

28. 'Lords of the Underworld: The Darkest Night' by Gena Showalter
Pages 374
29. 'Lords of the Underworld: The Darkest Kiss' by Gena Showalter
Pages 368
30. 'National Mounter Services Organization: Tribute to a Legend'

I'm so excited because I just found out that come May, Showalter's coming out with more of the Lords of the Underworld series. I kind of feel like dancing, just a little.

what? did i kill the thread momentum by not responding for three days?
@dani - but. he's not involved in any explicit sexual acts in the show, is he?
dance. and then post it to youtube.
do it. <3
@cherry - you can totally join the convo and say it's fucked up. because it is. and that's the truth.
@aislin - gaiman is my hero. and moreso for being a big part of the CBLDF. (although i find it amusing and sad that there is a need for a comic book legal defense fund. :[ )
it definitely is a case relating to censorship. personal censorship, even, because the manga are part of his private collection and he has a right to keep them to himself. it's like the government is trying to control our personal lives to the most intimate details.
ps.
if you love/hate twilight/edward cullen/robert pattinson. be prepared to laugh yo' ass off. crude language and mentionings of drugs.
('be prepared' from the lion king just popped into my head. ;_; )
someone help me. i keep getting distracted from reading the graveyard book.
just like "OH, I WANT TO LISTEN TO NEW MOON." "OH, I NEED TO READ SABRIEL." "OH, CRAP. I HAVE WORK."
it is highly upsetting that my attention span is so short.

And no, but he does stuff that should be considered obscene. I was just saying that they should look at the stuff on TV that little kids watch before the bug out about private collections.

But srsly. To have someone who loved you so unconditionally and madly suddenly say "I don't want you" is a pretty deep cut.
