Since we've been talking about Max Barry, I started to read the only book of his that I haven't read yet, Jennifer Government.
This one clip is pretty amusing (and doesn't spoil the plot or anything), so I felt like sharing it.
Quote:
"Okay," the agent said, entering. "So about this body." He yawned.
"Well, he attacked my girlfriend," Hack said. "I was out and he... he tried to assault my girlfriend. She defended herself and hit him with a crumpet toaster. She thinks she killed him."
"A crumpet toaster?"
"Yep."
"What is that?"
"It's... you know, like an electric toaster. You cook crumpets in it. It's better than broiling them."
"Huh," the agent said. "Can you do bagels in that?"
"Um, no," Hack said. "Bagels don't fit in the slots. But you can get bagel toasters, I think."
"How about that," the agent said. "I had no idea."

@Cherry: Every time I think that I've figured out how much genius you have, you dish up a new plate of awesome! That is an inspired quote selection.
I won't hold the attention span against you. I only ever manage to have a good attention span by doing five things at once.
@Leenie: Mrmmf! I read the story you linked, and for a moment I thought it was autobiographical which was just really depressing... and then I'm like, "Fin! His daughter's name is Fin and his wife is Jen ohthankGod."
Awesome bit of writing. I hadn't seen that yet.
Welcome to Ducky and Chicory! :)

o-o Woah! And you're shooting for 250!
I love your reading list-- you hit a lot of really good books. :P
If you need any cheap book-sources to mitigate the cost, I do have a bunch of e-books. The authors I have are listed on my book challenge page. Have you read Douglas Adams yet?

Yep, I don't know what I was thinking. lol
Thanks, I do love all those books.
I have been meaning to read Patricia Briggs books.
Are they good?
That would be very usefull since I own all the books on my list.
I don't think so.
What has he written?

Yeah, they're actually pretty fun! They do have a few of the quirks that you'd expect from a sci-fi series with the lead heroine who's a shapeshifter mechanic. Mercy's fantastic, though, and I adore her. She's strong without the need to emasculate the guys around her, and capable of both standing on her own and accepting help when she needs it. Plus the books address some important RL topics by way of a fantasy setting.
I think you'd like them.
There were a couple of elements which gave made me roll my eyes, but I liked the first three enough that I've got the fourth on pre-order.
I'll find a way to send you over those e-books. Give me about 20 minutes. :P
Douglas Adams wrote the notoriously funny Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. :)

I have had them on my wait list to buy at amazon for awhile, but I didn't know if they were any good. Now that I know someone really likes them I will have to get them.
Ok, thank you so much ^^
Ok, I thought I had heard his name before. I have not read anything by him yet.
Are his books good?

I think it's more the genius and awesome of Max Barry. xD
Aah. My boyfriend's like that. He'll tell me about all the things he's doing and I'll be like "Oh. I guess you're too busy to talk, then. I'll leave you alone." and he's like "No, please talk. I'll get bored otherwise."
I, on the other hand, get overwhelmed easily. If I try to focus on too many things, my mind just sort of dies and I can't focus on ANYTHING.
Otherwise, I'll end up devoting all my attention to one thing and completely blocking out and ignoring the other. Like if I check Menewsha while watching TV (my TV is right by my computer), I'll turn around, look at the TV and realize I have no clue what's going on. xD; Good thing I have a DVR. REWIND POWER.
I've started and nearly completed Jennifer Government today. xD And it's not a particularly small book. Not large. About average. I'm about three quarters through it.

@cherry - much love for that. XDD
also, i totally understand the focus problems.
and for the same reason, i am also glad that we have dvr. x3
@aislin - i thought that, too, at first, but then i was like, "he's not going to be that cruel and publish it."
@lilith - holy god, 250?
and hotdamn, that's a lot of mercedes lackey.
ps.
so i got some more books today, mostly gaiman with a random steampunk anthology shoved in.
"it was a accident, ah sweah!"
i saw the audiobook when i was looking up gaiman kids books to recommend for wendy (kids lead) to make a display for the movie release. then i remembered i needed another copy of good omens. while i was traveling to the section, i found the steampunk book and went "OOH!" and while i was there, i found fragile things, smoke and mirrors, and neverwhere.
but i got the coraline audio book. FOR $7. because. why read it to myself in silence when i can hear the smexy british accent of my favorite author for three hours?
plus i am almost done with breaking dawn and i need audiobooks now for when i am doing something with my hands, but not with my mind. and i will have to actually work to get my other audio books ready to listen to. (aka i must make them bookmarkable so when i exit itunes, i can go right back in and it won't start over.)
also: neil with a panda. YOU CANNOT DENY THE ADORABLENESS.

Tireth: XD I found your plates! That was easy.
Plates---One's by the window, one is by the bed, and one is about to fall off the dresser, along with what seems to be some kind of binder. Might wanna catch that. XD
On the matter of money...I have an OC who is a vampire, and she is quite rich, as well, because, really, if you think about it: hundreds of years of life, no money spent on food...where is the money going to go, really? Plus, if you really want something expensive, there's no need to even pay for it. You have mad vampire sneaking skills and could easily snatch it.
Aislin: Oooh, I love Douglas Adams. Have you read Teatime for the Soul?

that would be my Binder of Data DVDs.
most of the contents are tv shows and movies.
.... NO REALLY, I DON'T HAVE A DOWNLOADING PROBLEM.
and it is carefully balanced on top of stitch 'n' bitch, snb nation, and chuck season 1. XD
i understand about the excessive amounts of money over hundreds of years and saving pretty much everything, but, like. they spend a LOT and the money never goes down and as of right now, carlisle is really the only one bringing in a salary.
it's just really convenient and slightly unbelievable.
but then again, carlisle is a doctor... XD

And Carlisle is handsome. I've found that society gives more money to pretty people. Also: did you know that there are huge discrepancies in salary among CEOs that follows a height-based trend?
After I found that out, I went for the three inch heels instead of purchasing a two inch pair. I don't want to be a CEO, but just in case... //endrant.
@Bishie: No, I haven't! It sounds like something I need to read, though, and I'm wondering if I haven't downloaded it at some point... *shuffles folders in comp.* Yes, yes I have it! The full title is hilarious, too. :P
Do you recommend it? And have you read all of his miscellaneous books? 'Cause I seem to have a few of them.
@Leenie: Heh. As evidenced above, I too have a downloading problem. Is there a support group for this? It's mainly sci-fi/ fantasy stuff, though.
That Gaiman photo is adorable. That should be a dating requirement: "Must Love Pandas." <0:3
@Lillith: His books are wonderful! I can send you the ebooks for the Hitchhiker's "trilogy," too, if you like. There are around 5 books in it, I think.
@Cherry: Oooh, I used to do that block-out thing with reading! It kind of irritated my teachers, actually. And concerned my family. I've graduated to the point now where I can at least hear the people around me (ish) when I read, but it's a close thing depending on the book.
You should write a review when you get to the end of Jennifer Government.
I wonder how many of us you've converted to Barry, now?

Aislin: I've only read a couple, sadly. I don't like reading on the compy, so I have to get a hold of hard copies. Plus, we already discussed my huge thing with owning versus borrowing, soo...yeah. XD;;
I definitely recommend it. It's a great book.
Tireth: XD I have a huge downloading problem. My 72 gig storage drive is already filled, and I just emptied it last month.
I can understand how it could happen. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't keep buying cars, though. x_X The car thing drove me nuts.

@ Bishie: I completely understand that. (Except the reading on the comp thing, 'cause I have magic eyes which like adjustable fonts. :P)
But I couldn't imagine, for example, not owning a hard copy of any Potter book. Or ever reading them on the computer before I've read a literal, tangible, new-book-smelling hard copy.
Unless they're the French versions-- I have French translations of them on the computer.

Go ahead and post your list here! That way you can be listed on the main page when you complete your challenge. :)
You won't have any problem finding it again later on; your post will be linked permanently to the front page. All of the names of those in the challenge are listed, alphabetically, with a link to their book list on the first page of the thread. Knerd put it all together, 'cause she's a genius like that.
Welcome to the book challenge, by the way! :glomp:

Go ahead and use the German title. The list is part of your personal challenge, so you don't have to gear the list towards us. Just write the book title, in whatever language, and number your list so you know how you're progressing. :)
If you want to recommend the book to us, though, a lot of us would probably need the English title. :P

Edit: Looking at peoples list I'm confused. Do I have a blank list and fill in the book behind the number once I finished it? Or do I compile a list and fill in the first 10 books and mark them as read once I'm done? I'm so befuddled I think I need another coffee O.O

@aislin - i want to be tall. D:
and we really do need a DA.
downloader's anonymous. x3
next time i make a list of things i look for in a person, that will so be on there. XDDD
i can't hear anything when i read and really get into it.
but DANI, ON THE OTHER HAND, can listen to a lecture while reading a book and still repeat back what the teacher just said. she's so freaky sometimes. :3
aw man. that new book smell.
it's drug for bibliophiles. XD
@bishie - my 200gb (read: 189gb) and my 250gb (read: 222gb) are mostly full. total, i have less than 10gb free on them. i really need to go through everything and burn more dvds.
it's not even buying cars, but buying expensive cars that hurt me.
i mean. a freaking aston martin? and of course alice's porche. and ferrari. purrrrrrrr.
... i almost drooled on my keyboard. D:
@ehnvy - just using the german titles should be fine.
if we really want to, we can look the book up and see if they're offered in english at all. D:!
or we can ask you things like the author and what it was about. :3 (i really don't think the author's name would change between languages. /sarcasm)
ps. you can make your list however you want it. no joke. i've been putting books up and tracking my progress through them, but other people only post when they are done with a book.
it's your preference.

@ Leenie: You know, half of the time I want to be really tall and the other half I want to be really short. I just don't like this whole middle place where I'm stuck. Short people are always perceived as being cuter, and so they make better assassins: they can hide more easily and are more frightening when angry. And tall people have the height advantage for running, most sports, wage discrepancies, and getting things out of my kitchen cabinets.
I, on the other hand... ?... nada. =|
Heheh. DA. Dumbledore's Army. Am I a dork?
It is addicting! Which is really bad, because it makes me a downright liability in bookstores.
On an amusing note, can you imagine the 50 Book Challenge regulars going on a group-outing to a bookstore? Apocalypse. Awesome apoctalyptic explosion and a possible bankruptcy.
@ Bishie: Ask Santa for an external harddrive as soon as possible. :P
@Ehnvy: Like Leenie said, you can post your books however you like. I post books after I've completed them, but I do also have a "to read" list for recommendations I don't wish to forget. Some people post the books that they've started and then adjust the page numbers to mark their progress, and some people don't even keep track of page numbers. It all depends on how you want to do it.
