@Minet - It's bugging me because I want to spell "Minet" as "Mint". Can I do that? At least it isn't Tire. >.< Read Inkheart, then you can go see the movie. ^-^ It'd be a win/win situation.

@Cherry: I have this feeling that you want leenie to read Jennifer Government, but I think I may be wrong.

I just finished an interesting modern fae story called Tithe by Holly Black . . really good - I sat and read all through dinner and stayed at the table until I finished the last 50 pages :lol:

edit . .yeah - I mean Tithe. And I agree - it felt kind of rushed at some points, but it was still enjoyable :yes:

Um...you mean Tithe? o: Cause Tithe is really good. ^_^
I loved it. Wanna read Valiant now. But of course, it was there every time I went to the library before I paid my fines, and then when I finally paid them, it was checked out. =_=;

Tithe is okay. But I think that Holly Black was trying so hard to get across the dark mood that she left the story really under-developed. I think that she could have done better.

My vote is for Jennifer Government or Good Omens if you're looking for a fast read. Both are ridiculously satisfying (and really, how can you go wrong with extreme capitalism or the-end-of-the-world?) and short reads. Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide is a reading investment, and I wouldn't go for Neverwhere unless you're already familiar with Gaiman's work. It's actually turned a few people away from his novels, oddly enough.

Hope this helps!

fine, fine.
jennifer government & inkheart together, good omens, hhgg, battle royale
and the short stories throughout.

@dani - you. 500+ is long. you're just crazy.

@tithe talk - i want to read that so baaaad. D:
i just keep forgetting to get it. |D

@allometric - not necessarily a fast read, but something not too deep? lighthearted and fun. the abhorsen trilogy is just one of those things that makes me think a lot and i just finished a manga series that did the same thing, so i want to breathe a little.
ultimate hitchhikers is a long read, but i really want to read it since my uncle gave me the book as a graduation present over six months ago and i haven't touched it yet. ;_;
and i am in love with gaiman, so it's nothing new, really. i've already seen the tv miniseries so i want to read the book and pick out the differences.

:hug::heart: Happy Valentine's, everyone!

I have a week off of school, so I can actually be online for the next week. If y'all wants to pm me with your various happenings, I'm around! :boogie:

@Leenie:
Allometric gave good advice above! Gaiman's writing is beautiful, but the feel his writing style in Neverwhere is different from that of the Graveyard Book; it can throw you off if you're not expecting the switch. It's also oddly different than Stardust. The writing through all three novels shares one or two stylistic traits, but the varying tone of each makes me think that Gaiman has several different writing personalities which he tries on with an increasingly wonderful level of whimsy. :heart:

I haven't managed to get excited about Neverwhere yet-- keep putting it down-- but I'm told that the work really pulls through in the end.

How does Coraline compare to what you've read of Gaiman? I really want to read it... but I'm looking for a Graveyard style uplift to help me temper various real life emotional roller-coasters.

I recommend Inkheart, I think. The novel is long enough that you won't feel left adrift, but simple and playful enough that reading it won't be irksome or time-consuming. It's not a difficult read, and the whole of the text is so bookworm-centric as to be beguiling. It's a book by book-lovers for book-lovers.

Only downside: Inkeart begins a series, and you seem to be seeking an intermission novel. The book stands well enough on it's own, though.

I can't say one way or another on Jennifer Government-- only that I loved Syrup and that I'm starting on Government this week. I just got it through PaperBackBookSwap. :)

(P.S.-- I put up more ebooks on my skydrive.)

@leenie: I've read pretty much all of them. My favorites are: The Storyteller's Daughter (Arabian Nights), Beauty Sleep (Sleeping Beauty--this was one of the first ones published, so there are a lot of typos), Scarlet Moon (Little Red Riding Hood--involving werewolves;) ), Sunlight and Shadow (The Magic Flute), The Night Dance (12 dancing princesses), Water Song (The Frog Prince), and The Rose Bride (The White Bride and the Black Bride). I'm also looking forward to two coming out later this year: The Diamond Secret, which is about Anastasia, and Winter's Child, which is a retelling of the Snow Queen.
@Cherry: I, Q: http://www.iqtheseries.com/
@Aislin: Coraline is pretty good, although I don't think it is as good as the Graveyard Book or Stardust. Different definitely. A little more geared for younger readers. I would be more likely to recommend Interworld or the short story anthologies Smoke and Mirrors or M is for Magic if you can get ahold of any of those.

@aislin - YOU BEEN GONE FOREVER. D:
but i am totally expecting nothing and everything from neverwhere.
i've seen the miniseries so i understand the basic plot and it can let me focus more on the writing.
and of course, this is gaiman, so i have all expectations for this to be random as hell.

coraline is fairly similar in style to graveyard book, just because of it being darkscary gaiman for kids.
it is really dark and, at points, terrifying (or so i'm told. i kept falling asleep. xp i have an odd perspective on basic emotions), but it also has it's humorous parts and some cute pieces as well.

i have inkheart and inkspell and the only reason i didn't get inkdeath is because i didn't feel like getting $50 of kids books at once. |D
(i prefer to keep a series to one binding. i have some series split up because parts fit on one shelf, but not the rest)
i'm not necessarily seeking an intermission novel. if i didn't have other new things to read, i would read the claidi journals again.

yaaaaay more ebooks. now i just need to get my iphone working again. @[email protected];;;

@shadow - ohmygod, you've read them all. o______o;;
i totally need to read some now. XDD

ps.
funnily enough, i've been watching graham norton all day (to clear some space off the dvr. DDD8) and i now have a craving to watch a korean drama again. (you know, a specific one. XD coffee prince, if you know it)
seventeen episodes, but it's so cuuuuute. @[email protected];;

pps.
guys. i work at a bookstore.
if i have a book listed, i've nearly researched the damn thing.
i know what is going down with the novels i read.

@leenie: No. 600ish pages I'm able to read within a day. I could probably even read that on a long school & work day. Once it hits 700 pages I can't complete it in one day, thus it is long.

It takes me a while to read books because I am so detail oriented. When I finish a book, ask me a question about it and I'll practically tell you what page the answer was on. Even years later if you hold up a book I've read, I'll be able to tell you the plot in detail. I kept bringing up plot points from HP books when my friends and I were reading the seventh. They finished before I did, but they had to keep looking back through the books because they missed what I was trying to discuss with them (lol)

I'm pretty much the same way. The fun of reading a book is taking the time to enjoy it, so I'm not going to skim through something as fast as I can just so that I can find out what happens. It's all a great journey that shouldn't be rushed. :yes:

:glomp: I missed you guys!

@Shadowfoot: Yesyesyes! Slow and steady. Detail-oriented book obsessives unite! :boogie:

I had the same problem with Deathly Hallows. In a fit of pique, I almost considered swearing off the Leaky Cauldron podcast-- 'cause I was sleepy and Melissa Anelli had forgotten the name of Nurmengard. :sweat:

The father of a close friend wants both her and I to take a speed reading class-- he is a strong proponent of easing our academic futures-- and I nearly fell all over myself woefully trying to explain that if you read that way you might miss an adjective and the whole process could be devastated.

@Leenie: I know! I'm sorry. I've been pretty beset by academics lately. I've got a full course schedule with three AP classes, plus three online courses that I have to complete before April in order to graduate. I love learning, but I love sleeping too, so the whole thing has been about as confusing as a honeymoon in the Vatican. What does one do?

I actually really enjoy the occasional randomness of a talking tree or the 33rd President of the United States. And I don't mind the occasional addendum of kid-style cute. :angel:

:P Yours is the same reason I haven't finished the Inkheart series. It's guilt-inducing, that kind of purchase.

I've a curious question: do you get a lot of bookstore congestion around Valentine's Day?

@Dream: Yay! :hug: How have you been? Do you still have a ginormous school day to contend with, or have things settled down a bit?

@Knerd: Your signature makes me want to tap dance in giggly joy. :heart:

@shadow - i try to take my time on books, but nearly as soon as i'm done, i forget a lot of details and things.
i just don't have the memory. :[
but i remember i like it, so most of the time, i go back and read it. again and again and again. x3
dani can only read that fast because she has a magical ability. she can read and, say, listen to a teacher's lecture at the same time and be able to recite both back with fairly good detail.

@aislin - don't push yourself so hard. :[
books are guilt-inducing. XD it's best to take them in small $20-$30 purchases.
we don't get a lot of customers for valentine's compared to, say christmas, but it is slightly more than a usual non-holiday time.
consumers usually go for flowers or chocolates for v-day, not so much for books. xp
course, this is from my experience last year, since i haven't gotten hours since right after christmas. 8DD;
i can only guess that this year is worse because of the craptacular economy.

ps.
i haven't started my books yet.
graham norton marathon for me~~
(aka cleaning off the dvr)

pps.
kitami. going from white lolita dress to black bdsm outfit is a slightly scary change. XD

@ Leenie: Well-- to be fair, it's all only on account of my not pushing myself before. I have to get it out in one great go. :lol:

Have the lack of hours been by choice, or also a probable result of craptacular economy?
John Stewart had a wonderful segment going on that called "clusterfuck to the poor house," which I found cathartic. :yes:

Roses, pah! Chocolates and books are so too romantic. :heart:

@Shadowfoot: Never heard of I,Q. Something you'd recommend?

@Bishie: :glomp: Hey, ditto! I was gone too. Cue Twilight Zone theme. :)

I'm all happy. 'Cause my new girlfriend has shiny curly hair, and it's difficult not to be. How've you been?

In other news, my grandmother distracted me during a process which involved an exacto knife, so now my finger is bandaged by way of a paper towel and packing tape. Which, of course, does wonders for my typing. :roll:

Shadow:Yeah, that's it! It's an awesome book, but it freaked me out! Especially since I then went and saw Coraline. XD
Cherry: It looks like a kid's book, but it's pretty adult. It's about this evil spirit that is trying to get this child's soul, and his toys have to save him. It's a lot scarier than it sounds, trust me. XD
Aislin: XD Man, ghetto bandage!
I've been good. :3 That's awesome about your girlfriend. I spent yesterday with mine--it was super fun.
