Yeah I'm sure I will. I tend to just pick stuff to read as I come across it though or as someone suggests it to me. I'd like to read all of Dickens as I haven't read much of his, and some Jane Austin besides Pride and Prejudice. I'd also like to read Ivanhoe once before I die.

Talking about mandatory books that people have to read but really dislike, I'm trying REALLY HARD to read kite runner, but so far it has been the first fiction book that I have ever disliked in my entire life. I'm really having trouble finishing it right now and I'm about 7 chapters behind >.< omg, this is sooo not good >.<

Riskia- I need to read the original Alice in Wonderland myself! I keep meaning to borrow it from a friend who has it, but I keep forgetting to ask him...
I really do need to read it, according to my grandma, we're somehow related to the real-life Alice it was written for.
Moxie- I could not stand Hucklberry Finn. I hope you like it better than I did! Jim was a charming character, loved him to death, and I'm glad I've read it, but the process of reading it gave me little enjoyment.
I try to read classics, I really do, but I constantly end up with not... classics... *ahem* I have several sitting on my shelf and and a few out from the library, but I seem to have trouble getting around to them.
The Once and Future King by T.H. White is the next book I plan to read, once I finish Mr. Murder by Dean Koontz, though. I LOVE tales of Camelot, and I'm so excited to read it!
LaVida- You're the first person I've talked to who didn't like Kite Runner! I myself have yet to read it, but I loved his other book, A Thousand Spelndid Suns.
As for required reading I didn't like... ERNEST HEMMINGWAY. I hated Old Man and the Sea. Thought I was done with him my Freshman year, nope, had to read The Sun Also Rises this year. And it was a million times worse. I honestly think it is my least favorite fiction book I have ever read. I'm a history geek, but William Manchester managed to make A World Lit Only by Fire INCREDIBLY boring. And like I said, I wasn't fond of Huck Finn either.
Every other book I've had to read for class since seventh grade, I've liked or loved.

If you like historical fiction you might want to check out Ransom by Julie Garwood, that was a really good read. Or if you want something a little more intense there's The Crimson Petal And The White by Michael Faber. Both are set in historical times rather than featuring historical figures or events, though.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to re-read both of those when I'm done with the complete works of Lewis Carroll.
Moxie - I've actually been doing a lot of classics this year! Or variations on classics (like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies). Then I throw in fluff like Charlaine Harris novels or Palahniuk (while I love him, he's fluff compared to Burgess, Wilde, and Stoker) to break up the flow.
Bishie - Dickens is okay... sometimes... maybe. And I've never been a huge Austen fan. I mean, the only way I ever made it through Pride and Prejudice was with the addition of zombies. Because when I had to read it in school I cheated and used spark notes.

@Knerd: I'm not really being discriminatory at this point. I read it, it's printed in book-form; therefore, it belongs on the list :P
I saw a couple of pages back that you were talking about A Clockwork Orange. I really need to pick that up as well. We talked about it in high school, but only briefly.

I have the same mentality.
So much of my reading right now is for class or my own research. If I took it out of my list, I had hardly anything left!
Besides, the whole point of the challenge is just to get yourself reading. There's no reason to get picky about it.

My mother language is German. But I've been here so long, with so many English speaking people around me that I'm getting really really rusty. I'll have to go through my books and read some of the ones my Daddy sent me.

@Iltu: Yeah, I just picked it up today actually, along with Peter Pan. Yaaay, classics. ^^ And my friend wants me to find the original Little Mermaid story for her, so I might steal that when she's done with it.
Speaking of classics, I loved Pride and Prejudice. xD I just read it about six months ago, actually, and just picked up a small collection of Jane Austen's works. I think it has four or five of her more well known novels in it.

19. Mercy Thompson - Homecoming - Patricia Briggs

@RisikaFox: I read the original version of the Little Mermaid. It kind of made me sad. I actually prefer the disneyfied version. The original Peter Pan is totally awesome. Now that one I prefer over the disneyfied one. In fact I can't really stand the Disney one, it's too sanitized in comparison. The book I'm reading now, The Child Thief by Brom, is a retelling of the Peter Pan story only darker I'd say, but I was reading the author's notes on how he got to that and he mentioned some things about the darker undertones of the original. Once I read the quotes that changed his perspective on the book, I wondered how I didn't pick up on it the first time. He layers in some classic mythology with the original story and adds some grit. It's really good so far I'm in love with it.
@Melissa: I've just picked up fables in the last few months. I finished the 3rd one a few weeks ago and I loved it. :) If you can't tell from the rant above I really adore retellings of classic fairy tales, mythology and nursery rhymes. I'm fascinated by seeing different author's takes on things and experiencing what they can add to it.

@Sunlit.rains: Yeah, I know it's a sad story. I just kind of like to know where the story 'began' you know? What story was so awesome that people went and remade it years later?
---
Anybody know if the Tales of a Thousand and One Nights(or whatever variation you'd like to call it) is worth reading? I know it spans several volumes... I saw a couple at Borders yesterday, but they were $20 each, so I want to make sure it's worth the investment. xD

@RisikaFox: oh I know what you mean. I'm not sad I read it persay. I just didn't know it was so different so it kind of shocked me when it turned out sad. I've never read the Tales of a Thousand and One Nights is worth reading. It's been on my list I just haven't gotten to it yet. I have a friend who read at least parts of it for her folklore class. I'll ask her about it next time I talk to her.

Ah, I sort of don't want The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest to end knowing there will never be another Steig Larsson novel but when I start reading I don't want to put it down. The 200 or so pages I've read in the last couple of days (I'm hardly ever in my room) are the first proper reading I've done in ages.
Moxie: I'm trying to incorporate classics into my list this year too. Two of my new friends here have made some recommendations for me. ^^

It's alright. ^^ Thank you for putting me on the first page.
Just a comment, I don't want to start fights with any twilight fans. I was shelving in borders last night and I shelved a copy of Wuthering Heights and it had a big "Edward and Bella's favorite book!" and it kind of made me sad. Putting aside the fact I don't really like twilight, I feel like books should be read for their own merit, not just because Edward and Bella say you should. I would feel the same way about any editions of books that came out saying "Harry Potter's favorite book!" and I adore Harry Potter. I mean maybe it's a good way to get people to read it but, I don't know it bothered me.

Iltu>> and I really don't like kite runner because it makes me feel so bad, like how Amir lies so much and Hassan getting abused and stuff >.< it just gives me a bad feeling in the stomach.
Oh yea, some people where talking about classics and I think that instead of making us high school students read Shakespeare (with all the sad endings ALMOST all the time), couldn't we read OTHER classic literature? Like maybe something like The Count of Monte Cristo or something =3 . Everyone's sooooo sick of Shakespeare over here >.>

@LaVida: Crella de Vil is the delightfully fabulous villainess (I'm not sure I spelled that right or if that's a word but my spell check is failing) from 101 Dalmations. I want to read The Count of Monte Cristo. I saw the movie and really liked it. I must confess I DO love Shakespeare though.

One of my friends told me about that "Bella's favourite book!" edition of Wuthering Heights because it's her favourite book anyway but even as a Twilight fan she doesn't want people to think she's saying it because of that.
I'd sooner throw Bella off a cliff than aspire to be like her (not a Twilight fan myself) but anything that gets kids reading something they normally wouldn't have thought of or would have felt too intimidated to try can't be all bad. ^^;
