Scholar- I completely agree! Cats are a lot better for travelers. I know my neighbors' cats get destructive and don't eat as much when they leave for extended periods, when we return home from trips, my cat sulks but hangs around us nonstop, and other stories like those, but realistically speaking, cats are waaaaay better at caring for themselves and dealing with it.

My dad wants to get a puppy next spring, but he travels all the time and I'm not thrilled with him for being so insistent about it. :/ He's moving before then, and the house will be close enough to my mom's house and my school that I can ride my bike there to spend time with the dog when he's gone, but I still think it's not right. (And this is irrelevant to the conversation, but one of our dogs is pretty old, and I don't think it's fair to him to bring a puppy into the house in his golden years. He's got a few years left, tops, and a puppy is going to take a lot of attention away from him.)

Roxxxy- Oh, poor dog! It's so sad when they've been abused. I'm glad she's got a good home with you all now!
I think training books would be a great idea.

@[email protected] wowies, eveyone's getting a doggy @[email protected] I'm actually kinda split between a cat and a dog :d doggies, you have to walk them, kitties you have to be careful you don't get clawed (yes, I do know that they're retractable). Doggies you can get some excercise with them, while kitties are easier to cuddle with when you're lazy as heck.

anime_scholar>> yea, but wheren't there cases where the dog died with the owner and that's one of the reasons that they're known as "man's best friend"? or something like that.

Risika>> well, the part that I really enjoyed was actually the afterward and the comics XD but I don't mind following Anita Blake because it doesn't come out that fast and Merry Gentry - omg, I wanna see what the kiddies look like! >.< usually books so do not put pregent women in supernatural stories XD and with, like, so many fathers too XD

There's comics in? O.o That's strange, although intriguing. And Merry Gentry babies? :O Oh my... I'm not very far into that series just yet. xD

So I've got a question for you guys:
For my birthday last month, my parents got me a small gift certificate for Barnes and Noble. I've pretty much decided that I want to use it to expand my collection of graphic novels, but I'm having difficulty finding some that I'm really interested in. I could always go with the big titles like Watchmen or Maus, but I'd rather give a look to some graphic novels that are a bit farther off the beaten path. (And the more popular ones are easier to find used copies of, so I'll always have an eye open for them anyway.)

Can anyone recommend some lesser known graphic novels to me?

So far on my list, I'll be ordering:
Sky Doll, Volume 1 by Alessandro Barbucci
Epileptic by David B.
American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang

By graphic novels, do manga count?

If so, I highly recommend With the Light by Keiko Tobe. They're larger than your average manga(think VIZ BIG size), so naturally they cost a little more. But it's a very good series that follows the family of an autistic child, through the various stages of development and how they deal with various problems that come up.

I hadn't really considered buying manga, but only because I don't want to get sucked into reading an entire series.
I don't have that kind of money.

But I'll definitely look into those suggestions. I trust you guys to give good advice!

@TaiyoTsuki
Which book are you guys up to?

@Knerd: I know what you mean... Manga can get quite expensive. I usually get mine at Rightstuf though, you get a couple dollars off the bigger companies products, anyways(eg. Viz, Tokyopop, Del Rey).

This is a great book! It was one of my favorites all through middle school and high school.

Are you very familiar with Greek and Norse mythology? If not, it'll give you an amazing introduction. And if you are, it really highlights some of the more interesting parts of each mythology and gives commentary.

haha thanks! ^_^"...That's just the list of books I found at my dad's house. Many more to be added. Once my room is packed, it's readin' time!

yyup! I love mythology! We have a huge Encyclopedia of Mythology at my mom's house that covers the myths/legends from around the world. And my mom's got a Mayan Mythology book that I've tucked away to look at.

I got the first two volumes of Y: The Last Man from the library today, I've heard it's a good series.

I don't really know many graphic novels, just comic books. Mike Carey's Re-Gifters is a good graphic novel about a Korean American teenage girl, but it's fairly short. His adaptations/spin-offs of Neil Gaiman's works are very good too.

I thought I was really going to like Crime and Punishment. I was wrong. I understand it just fine and everything, but it drags on. And on. And on. About every little thing that happens. :gonk: I hope I like it better later on. I seriously cannot read more than a few pages at a time, because it drives me out of my skull! And I'd reaaaally like to have it done soon, so I can read the next book in the Fey series, Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, and Sylvie and Bruno Concluded... Which are all books I'm dying to read!
