XD Seriously, Twilight's like a drug. Most people who like it can't tell you why....They go off on a list of reasons why it's bad, maybe one or two why it's good, and then, "But you should read it. You'll like it a lot."
Stephenie Meyer is brainwashing us!

I have just finished Neil Gaiman's Stardust, and found it perfectly lovely. The writing was wonderfully flip, and therefore respectably representative of life as a whole.

I'm hoping to finish Kite Runner by tomorrow. I also desperately want to read Eric Schlosser's Reefer Madness, but find myself detained by responsibilities. This makes me resent responsibilities.

Yes! That's it exactly!

One can't help but read it really, and yet also cannot help but feel guilty for doing so. The writing lacks credibility but also causes the pleasing urge to giggle. It's a cruel paradox!

I actually found Meyer's writing itself to be very enjoyable. Once I read The Host, and that stupid sub-par teen drama plot was out of the way, I realized I really love Meyer's writing. There's something just...beautiful about it.
And she actually did a very good job with character development in The Host. I think Meyer as a writer is splendid--she just choice a really crappy way to show that with Twilight.

Ah, I've never read The Host. My friend threw me in the path of Twilight first, which worked for the first three books, but after reading Breaking Dawn I didn't have the spark to engage in any other Meyer book for awhile.

Is there anything different about the narrative choices in the Twilight series and The Host?

Really? You didn't like Breaking Dawn? I thought it was the best of the series. The second and third ones left a bad taste in my mouth, so I was glad BD was better.

Hm...not particularly. I think the main difference between the two is that the characters and plot are much more original and interesting in The Host, allowing you to fully enjoy the novel. There are also periods of nothing but description or action, as opposed to Twilight, which was very dialogue heavy, so you really get a feel for Meyer's writing.

Cherry & Bishie:: Exactly. xD
Its like some freaking virus or drug. I can't tell you why exactly I must read it, in fact I'll give you a list of reasons why the book isn't good. Yet I'm still tempted to throw my books overboard and re-read the series. Dx

Its creepy. o.O

I'm not touching The Host. I refuse to get addicted to anything else. >.>;

I liked Breaking Dawn a lot, too. You actually could see how much Stephenie Meyer had matured as a writer and story teller in it.

... I'll add The Host to my reading list, but probably the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday reading list. I feel less guilty, then, because I'm not technically ignoring my school work. :)

Breaking Dawn didn't really do it for me as much. The plot was very predictable, and I didn't feel that Bella really overcame her obsessive compulsive neediness. As a protagonist, she could sometimes be excessively overbearing. So the opening of the book? Didn't work for me. I didn't like the whole Romeo and Juliet complex experienced by Edward and Bella in the earlier books, either, although it lead the action along to interesting places.

The actual writing may have been better. I don't know. I have to check.

I loved Alice and Jake, though. I always do.

... and now I'm thinking of rereading them. Which is where the virus thing comes into play.

@kitty: Ok, I'll go to the nearest library and borrow the first book of twilight... Will that make you happy? XD Haha, I'm laughing at myself...

Oh so the writing isn't good? Or is it like high school level reading?
I'm always willing to try something new... Even if I don't like the series, its just good enough to know that you like it so theres a good chance I might. ^^
Cool, tell me how you like the movie, hunny. <333

@cherry: Haha, thats really funny... And what kita said about it too.
I really LOVED the lord of the ring trilogy (I read the entire series and the hobbit).
I think the author was just such a great writer... so poetic.

.__. Twilight kind of scares me. I haven't read it yet, but I work at a book store and females from the age of 12 to 45 are crazy for it. I went to the library today to see if I could check it out because everyone keeps insisting I should read it.

but...I think the library was giving me a sign not to read it because the library was closed for Veterans Day.

Hmm, I don't know mel. Lots of people tend to get into vampire series.
Remember when first anne rice wrote vampire books???
It was like she had her own cult.

Gab:: Yes. It would make me happy. x3

I dunno its like, she uses the same describing terms over and over again for one thing. Like she needs to drill these things into your head. The characters don't develop, really. The humans are just...there. Bella is just....so annoying sometimes. And Edward is all -angst angst- and.... >.>;; See this was what I was talking about, I can give a whole LIST of stuff that's wrong with it, and yet I spent....over like 40 dollars on the books, and read them nonstop, barely sleeping.....Its freaking creepy. :gonk:

Its like that Three Days Grace song...
Quote:
I hate everything about you. Why do I love you?
:rofl: Well not everything..... -bricked-

&& But its not like Anne Rice, at all. >.> Its totally a fluffy love story thing. Teenage human in love with a vampire who doesn't wanna be in love with her because he's too dangerous for her -angst angst- but they're so in love its impossible for them to be apart.

Damn it now I want to go read it. ><

@ Kita: She definitely does recycle the same descriptions! I'm not even sure how golden eyes would go about smoldering, really, but that's all Edward's eyes ever seem to do. Smolder. Goldenly. Over and over and over.

Which seems like cacophony, since "mold" and "gold" are the two rhyming parts of that phrase. It always distracted me.

I've never read any Anne Rice.

I like Anne Rice...except for Queen of the Damned. XD I destroyed that book.

Did anyone else think that Edward and Bella's relationship was rather....frightening? Like they were just a little too in love?

So what you're trying to say is that the characters seem shallow?
Well, a lot of books have shallow characters... but than theres shallow characters in real life, so it kinda makes sense sometimes unless the author is just shallow... *shrugs*

I know what you mean, kitty. Its easy to get obsessed with books that are easy to read... Its happened to me before too. After reading your description, it sounds like she was going for a very romantic swing on vampirism.

~~~~~~~~~~
I agree, bishie. Rice is a good author, but I did not like that book so much...
Yeah, I don't read anne rice anymore either, mel. The series gets boring after awhile.
Smoldering like a fire? Molten gold? Hot? Hot eyes? :mrgreen:
Hell I don't know. xD
I love Anne Rice's vampire novels (Lestat is my lovely) except for The Queen of the Damned. That book was the most BORING thing. It took me two tries to get through. ><
Bishie:: Ok, you know how Bella always got uncomfortable around Sam and Emily?
Cause they were all lovey-dovey?
Because she wasn't the one experiencing it.
There's no such thing as "too in love" when you're the one in love. xD
Bella and Edward are like extremely in love. There is no such thing as "too in love" for them.
There should never be a such thing as "too in love", in my opinion. x3
...And here you've been visited by romantic Kita. :lol:
Edit// Gab:: Yeah...its a kind of...perfect world...romance...thing. >.>
*punts Cherry out of the thread*
Another one of my friends has succumbed to the Twilight addiction. She never stood a chance - She consumed all the books in about 5 days. Now I'm surrounded by girls jabbering on and on about how awesome the movie is going to be and whether Myers will ever finish the last novel.
Yeah, it is sort of scary how like... almost everyone succumbs to it at some point or another. oO
A bunch of people I know here just started reading it, and while it's cool that they're reading something I like, it's like... they're everywhere.
One of my friends is devestated because her sister bought her the next Twlight book (no idea which one is which or which one she's up to) but it's her Christmas present so she has to wait. Hee.
I got a couple of books from the library today and went straight into reading Maurice. I searched on the library computer and it said "The book is on the shelf" and that shelf was "Adult Fiction". Except that means, no it's not in hardbacks or the paperbacks, it's in the tiny 'Classics' section hidden in the corner and no it's not actually on the shelf it's on some random stand-up display even further in the corner. I've searched for ages for books because of my library's definition of "on the shelf". -_-
Cause that sounds really annoying and poorly organized....
