Hi there,

I was wondering, say a witter uses the world environment but none of the main characters in a story. Would that still be considered a fan fiction? Or is it something else?

For example: If someone wrote about hogwarts school but it was a different class year without any of the same teachers or students?

That kind of thing. It happens a lot with fantasy and Sci fi realities. Like the D&D universe and it's many series for example.

Ypu, it's totally fanfic then! And a lot of good ones are written that way, though purists may gripe.

Also, if you take the characters, but not the world, it's an AU, alternate universe.

I call those OC fanfics. :3 They're a lot more fun than normal fanfics, I think.
