Okay so on Tuesday me and a few people at my table were discussing whether or not we'll donate our usable body parts when we pass on. I also saw a thread about blood donations. :]
One girl made a great point that made me laugh too:
"Why wouldn't you donate them? You're dead! It's not like you need them for anything."
I can see how this would be a religious thing where every part of your body is sacred. That kind of thing. But when it comes to the point where you just want your body in one piece just because you don't like the thought of it being taken apart, seems a tad ridiculous. Donating organs such as kidney's to children seems so selfless. It's also a wonderful thing to think about that after you pass away you've offered your perfectly fine body parts to children that need them more then a dead body. :]
Edit: Or even a cancer patient. If you really sat and thought about it it would really be a cool thing to do too.

Some people think that doctors will try not to save you if they know you're donating organs. & ew I don't care if I'm dead. The thought of scientists using parts of me. No.

I honestly wouldn't mind having my body parts donated. Most of the stuff they'd take is on the inside, so it makes no noticeable difference to the appearance of the body, and besides, like you said, I'd be dead. I wouldn't need them. I'd like to know that even though I lost my chance at life, I helped someone keep theirs.

I'm an organ donor for the same reason... If I'm dead, what do I need them for? There's some people living that could use my liver or whatever so have at it! lol

If something on my body would be still functional and would help someone I would be happy to give that body part to him. (Yes I can be happy in death. XD)

I'm one of those persons that conflicts with themselves on whether to be an organ donor or not. ><; The thought of being cut up and having pretty much all my organs taken out makes me a little uneasy but I would like to help others if my organs are still healthy and usable. Eventually I'll probably be an organ donor and since I'm going to be cremated when I die it doesn't matter what shape my body is in. XD

Honestly the thought of someone cutting off my body parts is incredibly disturbing, whether I'm dead or not.
I'm currently not marked as an organ doner and I'm not sure if I ever will be. Maybe when I'm older I'll change my mind, but for now even thinking about it creeps me out.

I think donating any of your usable body parts to people after you die is a great thing to do. I am pretty sure that in university you can sign some forms and obtain a card that states that you allow your body parts to be donated to other people if you die. I am pretty sure that I will apply for this because it is a great thing to do and in a way you are living on through someone else!
@Okiama: Wow, I really doubt that I doctor would ever purposely let you die just because they know your body parts can be donated to others. Anyways in most cases people who do end up donating their body parts die some sort of instantaneous death that doesn't damage body parts like blowing a vessel in your brain or something.

That's not true actually. Most doctors will save a person's life regardless of whether they are a donor or not I'm sure its very very extremely rare to have a doctor that won't save you just because you're a donor. And it wouldn't be for scientific use. Being a donor means you're donating for your organs to give to someone that is still alive.

What is she going to use her organs etc for anyway? Looking pretty? No one's going to see her.
And it's not like she needs to respire, see, digest etc. They're redundant on a corpse.
Give them to someone who needs them. Who can life a life with them, rather than die a death.

I don't have a problem with donating my organs when i'm dead, ON two conditions.
1.) They're not leaving big gashes in my body. I don't want to look like i've been hit with canon balls at my fueneral.
2.) They don't give my blood/organs to someone who has the wrong blood type or whatever. It's only scewing it up for the person who needs the donation.
I think you also need consent from your marital partner and parents.

When I applied for my provincial health card, they had a card to fill out with my organ donation preferences. o_O It was a little freaky to fill out on the spot, but I decided on donating anything needed. Not that I think anyone would want my bones or kidneys, but the rest could be useful. xD I'd like to know that I gave someone else a chance at life. =]

I would happily donate my organs. Even if I was still alive and say my mom needed a kidney - who better to donate than her own child?
And if I were dead then just that - I'd be dead, there'd be no need for me to keep my organs. At least my heart would be beating on inside someone else's chest.

I haven't seen evidence that doctors would not try as hard to save your life, why bother when people really die so much. It's not their choice to prevent life.
If this was happening, it would be a very serious issue.
I'm not a donor right now but I probably plan to be. I haven't really thought of how I'd like to die. I dont really want to, but it will most likely be burial. as I think I said in another thread related, If my corpse can give some sort of nourishment (yea ew)to other life forms surrounding me then thats cool (unlikely in a cemetery though, lol. Nourish the dead..)
And who care what you 'look' like, they dont donate your face, and you're not naked, and most people dont have an open casket, so what difference does it honestly make.

Hah, I like that, "You're dead, you don't need them anymore!"
Which is true. I would happily donate any of my organs if I could and they would help someone. However, sadly, I can't because of my sickness. Maybe I could donate them for the benefit of research? If they do that. I mean, I am a "unique case." Could equally help those if I were to give someone a healthy organ n.n

I'm going to donate my organs after I die, for the exact reason the one girl said. I'll be dead. There's gonna be someone out there who will need my liver infinitely more than I will. What do I care if they're taken out of me? It's not like it's gonna HURT. I'll be DEAD.
As for cutting up my body and leaving me "unpresentable" for my funeral - take my organs out, wrap me up in plastic wrap to keep me from bleeding everywhere, and put some clothes on me over it. No one will ever know the difference! :D Problem solved.
The thought of it used to creep me out a bit, but...I got rather desensitized. XD; The way I see it...if you're squeamish, check yes, and just DON'T think about it. Because really...there is no need to think about it until you're DEAD, and then you won't be thinking at all. And it's not hard to not think about - I usually don't think about it at all, and I'm FINE with the thought.
And doctors do try just as hard to save you if you're an organ donor. Reason you hear about it when they don't is because it's rare and ILLEGAL. ;)

O: You don't need the consent of spouses or parents, you just need to have like, two witnesses to you saying you'll donate, I think? That's the way it is here, anyway. I would really like to donate whatever organs I could once I'm dead. I'm going to be cremated anyway because the stuff they do to bodies to preserve them and stuff kind of grosses me out, and it would save my family money on a casket and plot of land, etc. So I wouldn't mind being all hacked to bits before I'm burned. I don't really like, understand why there are so few donors. I mean, tons of people are on organ waiting lists. I know a lot of people mean to do it and die before they ever get around to filling out the papers, but purposely deciding to keep your organs in death is strange to me. Could someone who thinks that way like, explain it to me better?

The only time - the only time - being an organ donor enters into your medical care is if you're brain-dead but still technically breathing. If your brain stem is damaged, effectively destroying the higher functions of your brain and leaving you to spend the rest of your natural life hooked up to equipment that allows your body to function normally, a doctor may press a family member to authorize the termination of care so that your organs can be donated. If there is any chance at all that you will wake up or otherwise become aware - as in, your brain stem might not be dead, after all - then every effort to bring about that happy ending will be taken.
As for the excision of organs leaving huge gashes or holes, that will also not happen. These are doctors performing the removal. You will not be hacked apart with a chainsaw. Your chest cavity will be opened much like an autopsy, the usable organs will be removed, and your chest cavity will be closed, generally leaving no more than a thin, Y-shaped scar connecting your shoulder blades to your pelvis. As very few people are buried stark nude, I doubt the scar will present a problem at the funeral.
I myself am an organ donor. There simply is no good reason to not be one, barring religion.
