(this topic is specifically for adopted Grey's so discussion of adoption of any other animals is off subject. please respect that)
About 4 and a half years ago my parents and I finally decided to move past the loss of our last dog and find another family pet (other then our cat) that could fill the void left by our Ausy. My dad brought home a pamphlet depicting the most beautiful of dogs I'd ever seen. Sleek body. Big beautiful watery puppy dog eyes. We instantly fell in love.
And I've loved Grey's ever since. I dont think I could have a home without a Grey. In my opinion, they are the best do ever.
So, what about you Mene? Has anyone adopted one of these wonderful dogs before? Anyone thinking about it? Anyone just want to talk about Greys, there history (there descended from royalty dont ya know =3), the conditions that they still live in, how gawsh darn adorable they are. <3
Personal Grey history:
My family and I went threw a group in Kansas city thats no longer around (shame). We sent in inquires and looked over the pictures of dogs they had online. We fell in love with a little girl named Stat Gonzo and her story. She was adopted once but was going to be given back because her owner was divorcing and could not keep her. We went all out and were just about to set up a time to get her when the owner changed her mind.
Devastated we kept looking and found a girl name Flying Paris. She was a champion straight from the puppy mill and had only been fostered for 6 months. The poor girl had 29 pups in 7 litters (normally this would bee seem as illegal as its cruel to bread an animal so much BUT not for racers >.< ) but still had a wonderfully sweet personality. After talking with her foster mom for a while we decided to get her. So we drove out to St. Louis for a dog get together they would be at to pick her up. We fell in love as soon as we saw her and she was a part of our family for 3 years. She was 13 when we got her and already starting to show signs of sickness. We ended up loosing her a year and a half ago. No amount of type could state just how much it hurt to loose her.
Around 3 months after we adopted Paris, we get a call from the agency. They tell us that the woman who was giving up Gonzo changed her mind again and was willing to put her up for adoption and they asked if we were still interested. Mom wasn't so sure but when they offered the foster option, Dad was able to convince her and we got our second baby girl. Within less then a month we formally adopted her. We still have her to this day.
Mom dosn't plan on getting another once we loose Gonzo. She said she dosn't know if she could handle it. But after living with one of these dogs, its hard to say no to them.

I think greyhounds are beautiful dogs; they have such a neat shape. I don't know too much about their personalities, but from how you described it, they seem like they're sweet. :] I don't know if I'd ever adopt one though, I'm picky about dogs.

Oh there personalities are wonderful. But they can be as diverse as humans can be. Some are moody, some are lazy, some need to run none stop.
But they have this ability to just know what your saying and even talk back, in a way. If your ever looking for a dog and see a Grey, give um a chance. They are really great dogs.

Yeah, it makes sense that their personalities would vary. ^-^ I'm more of a cat person though.
My cousin has a tiny greyhound. :]

Greyhounds are by far my most favorite animals. Their structure is so gorgeous. My friend who owns three has lost about 30 pound in the past year because of them. (supposedly they are pretty active so you have to be active with them or they die.) Pretty amazing if I have to say so myself. xD. I wish I could have a dog. Sadly my budget doesn't help that much. lol.

You are not kidding when you say active. Most adoption agencies make you have a fenced in yard or access to a dog park because they have to run a good deal. Though they are known to sleep 23 hours a day. Gonzo can run from one end of our yard and back in a big circle for hours on end.
@'clockwork: OMG! Italian Grey's are so cute! My friend has one and she says she hates him but I think hes just adorable. The only thing I dont like about them is they bark a lot while regular ones dont tend to bark much at all.

My friend has a retired racing greyhound. She's pretty old now. When I was over at her house, she fell down and she couldn't get up. I had to pull her up back to her feet. It made me pretty sad to see her like that.
They look kinda odd at first, but I really like them. =)

Yeah, her dog is so cute, especially because he has a ton of sweaters because he's so tiny. ^-^ Her's didn't bark too much though, maybe your friend's dog was just that way. :0

My family has a retired greyhound named Lizzie. She is black and white and sleeps about 22 hours per day xD. We've had her for 7 years, and I could tell you paragraphs about her. . . she's really cute.
We got her when she was five people years old, so now she's REALLY old (greyhounds live average of 12 years, you people can do the addition) but fortunately she's still in pretty good healthy.
She's pretty small and an alpha. She barely tolerate other dogs, but is really nice and friendly with people. . . and now I have to go make her dinner cause my dad's taking her for her evening walk. xD

Our Paris was like that the last year we had her. It was really sad to see her like that. Was your friends dog a champion? We were told that champions in there later years will have this problem more often then lesser run/bread dogs.
@zipperglow: Did you get her straight from the track? What was she like? The group we went threw had all seniors so I'd never seen an adopty so young. I'm glad shes still in good condition for ya. I hope she stays that way for a good long time too.
@'clockwork: I'm against putting clothing on animals with the exception of animals with practically no hair so thats why I love seeing Grey's with sweaters and jackets on. There just so damn cute. Gonzo has a sweatshirt, a sweater, and a thin form blanket she wears during the winter. She hats putting them on but hates it even more when we take them off. X3
He dosn't bark? Thats awesome. My friends grandmother was a breeder and she said they tend to be barkers but like with all dogs there are some exceptions.

@ Infinity ~ Haha, yeah. ^-^ Do you have any pics of Gonzo? :]
My cousin's little dog wanted his sweater off too, but when it was off he couldn't stop shivering. xD So cute.
Yeah, the dog didn't bark too much. :0 Only when we first walked in my cousin's house, which is normal I think.

Oh, what a wonderful thread!!! ^____^
I love greyhounds! And seriously, I'm not a dog person - I've always had cats, and I was bitten by a dog when I was little, so they still make me a little nervous. But when I first got together with my boyfriend he told me one of his dreams was to adopt a retired greyhound, so I did a little reasearch...and then we ran into someone walking a couple of them at the park...and I absolutely fell in love! They're the sweetest dogs, and so deserving of a good home. I hope we have the money and the space to adopt one someday!!

Good luck to you. I hope you can adopt some day. ^w^
And dont worry about space. We were told that Grey's are even comfortable in an apartment as long as they get access to a place to run on a daily basis like a big yard or a dog park.

I had an adopted greyhound. She was awesome. I hope to get another one one day. Missy was bred for racing (of course), but she was considered too slow. If she had not been adopted, she would have been put down. I think it's apalling that these beautiful, loving animals are treated so badly, and I am so very grateful to Greuhounds for Pets, who brought her to me.

Thats horrible. I've heard of the practice of putting down the dogs instead of taking the 2 minutes it takes to call an actual rescue service. Its so horrible it makes me sick to even think about. Its just not fair.
The leader of the group around here showed up with a young girl at a meeting once, less then 6 months old. I was cooing over and cuddling her the entire time and I asked about her and the leader said she came from a litter that wasn't documented (they didn't know who daddy was so they had no papers) and if they hadn't had an in with the stable they were born at, they would have been destroyed. She said its really quite common for the stables to kill litters if they have no paperwork instead of calling a rescue group to take them.
Its really sick to think that just because they cant be productive racers they will just kill them. There such wonderful animals despite how they have been treated in.

I've considered adopting a greyhound when I have a place of my own and am settled into life and such. But I don't know if I would get a puppy. I think I'd rather save one of the ones that have been abused and put through races. I always feel so bad for those poor dogs D:

I love greyhounds. I have always thought they were pretty cute. The coloring of them also pleases me. I want to adopt some of the ones that are out of the racing career that no one wants anymore myself. I just feel bad.

My neighbors foster Grey Hounds. They get them straight from the races and keep them until somebody is willing to adopt them. Basically my neighbors break them into a much calmer life.
It's kinda funny, watching my short, pudgy golden retriver, race against the sleek Grey Hounds with only a fence dividing them. He can go the length three or four times, but then he stops.
Opposed to those dogs, who continue to streak back and forth for another thirty or so times. They are cool dogs.
Not that pretty, but they're still awesome.

Puppies can be a challenge. They are naturally skittish dogs so they need A LOT of socialization or they'll grow up stunted socially. The older ones are much easier to handle for new owners of the bread. I plan on fostering pups when I get older but its best to have at least one other dog to make them fell less threatened by everything.
@Clorissa: Thats pretty typical. They are rather forceful "LOVE ME DAMNIT!" dogs. Its like they know they have those huge puppy eyes (no matter how old they are) and they use them like dangerous weapons. X3 I once told my ex military friend that all he needed to do was send over a bunch of Grey's to the war zone and it'd all be over. There too damn lovable.
@Soko: Rescued racers are the way to go. But I warn ya, adopting one of these dogs (because of what they've been threw) is harder then adopting a kid. We had visits and things for 6 months. XD
@Screaming_Biscuits: One of the foster moms I've seen at meets usually has about 3 or 4 at a time plus her own little fat dog and she said its her summer entertainment to watch them try to race eachother in here big back yard. If it wasn't that Gonzo dosn't like other breads of dogs I'd love to take her to a dog park and see her race the other dogs. XD

I want to adopt a few when I live on my own, if I decide to get a dog. Greyhounds are like potato chips, if you have one you have to have another one. I used to dog sit for these people that had five rescue greyhounds that would take over the couch and lay on top of me at night. They were the sweetest dogs ever.

Greyhounds are beautiful dogs. I wouldn't mind having one but currently I can't have dogs. My parents are taking care of my cat until I get done with college, which won't be for a couple more years, or until I can find a house/apartment to rent that will allow animals. Greyhounds and Shelties are two of my favorite types pf dog.
