THIS THREAD IS BETTER

The Trying To Be Healthy and Exercise Support Hangout

This hangout is for those who want to do more exercise or eat more healthily, or both, for the purposes of feeling good and/or losing weight. I am not encouraging drastic dieting or starving yourself or other retarded things like that.

I just think it's great for people to be kind to their bodies, to feel good about themselves, and finally to have all the support they can get.

Great article: How to Lose Weight the Healthy Way

Firstly, I am trying to exercise more - specifically I want to beat the week. To "beat the week" you exercise for just half an hour on four out of seven days of the week - more than half.

I am also sticking to three meals a day. No snackies.

D:

Introduce yourself, and what you're trying to achieve. ^^ If you're aiming for a specific weight, don't be worried about sharing your current weight and target weight- or just the amount you want to lose.

Oooh~ I was thinking about something like this! ^^

Currently, I am 5'1 and ~115lbs. :S Since I'm 13, if I grew taller, then I'd be happy with my weight. XD If I were to stay this height forever [DDDD;] then I'd like to drop a few pounds, or turn it into muscle. XD I go to the gym 2 days a week for strength training for half an hour. >w< Currently, I'm taking baby steps. 8D Besides the poop we do at school's P.E, I do er...'dance' [if you could call it thata] and some HARDCORE SKIPPING. ;DD [Sorry, I thought that was really funny XD] Each for 3 minutes non-stop [which is hard for me! lol @[email protected];] I think overtime, I'll make them longer, for sadly, I'm still out of breath when I do such things. X[

Lately, I've been getting hungrier. o.o So result, I guess I've been eating more? XD I don't see it turning into fat, so I can only guess it's contributing to my 'muscles.' XD I think I've built some! :D Alas, all the days at the gym have not bene wasted roflmao. XD

At this time, I can find no fruit or vegetables I can eat for snacks. T.T The oranages have rotten and bananas aren't my best friend. XD

Isn't it better to eat lots of small meals and if not, smaller regular meals and more regularly occuring snacks? D: I've found that kind of hard to stick to myself, but I try. XD [I guess]

I'm really looking foward to more from this hangout! ^w^ YUSH I finished all my homework! More mene and er...'exercising' time! XDDD

I'm a girl if that makes any difference for my weight/height/age. >w<;

Hey, I'm 17 (so no more getting taller for me :( ) and I weight around 160 right now and I'm about 5'7". I'm a bit over weight but don't look it too bad, just want to get it under control.
My goal is to weight about 140 by when I turn 18 (In late August)
I currently walk about half a mile from the bus plaza to my school 5 days a week, run constantly at work (I never sit at work ever) about 15 hours a week.
My weakness is soda >_<;; I have to say I love the stuff. I also work at a fast food place so I'm trying to eat salads and grilled chicken (with no ranch or any extra fat junk) and just drink ice tea and water. D: I'm not doing very well yet but I think I can do it.

I get stressed a lot due to how crazy my life is, but I want to start going to Yoga again twice a week but may not be able to afford it. T_T;;
anyway hello~

Awww, someone beat me to it! *lol* I was just discussing starting a thread like this with folks over in the 21+ chat thread - looks like I'm certainly not the only one with the same goals! And I'm very happy to see the emphasis on healthy eating and exercise, rather that dieting. ^_^

As for me, I definitely need a lifestyle change. I'm a stress eater, and school has me very stressed right now! So I eat bad foods, gain weight and lose energy, feel depressed because of it, and then want to eat more! Vicious circle! I feel so much better when I eat better, but with it can be hard to stick to.

Weight-wise...I had gained a bunch of weight about 7 years ago. I started losing it slowly, just by changing my diet to fresh, organic foods. By the time I started school again last January, I had lost over half the weight I'd wanted to lose. But in just the last year of school stress I've gained almost all of it back! It's so frustrating.

Basically my goal is this - to lose at 25 pounds by my friends' wedding in May, by eating a healthy balanced diet (no red meat, lots more veggies, only whole grains) and exercising at least 30 minutes on most days. It sounds so simple, but its so hard! I'm really looking forward to us all working together to support each other to our goals! Let's go, team! ^______^

Oh I'm so please you did this i really liked the idea when it was mentioned the other day! I've got HEAPS of healthy recipes to add at some point, and they're yummy as too! Anyway, here's me:

I'm 21, and I've just had two babies in two years (youngest is 11 weeks old)and weight about 160pounds. ideally, I'd like to be about 130 pounds, but is probably very unlikely, and I can't really diet while I'm breast feeding anyway. What I have done recently however, is have to be REALLY careful on how much I spend on groceries, so as such I've totally altered our eating plan. I used to drink energy drink almost daily as I needed the caffeine, so now I'm not drinking anything but water, and I was given a book that was written a few years ago called "how to feed a family of four for $55 a week". Obviously inflation has caused this to be quite outdated, but it's certainly a lot cheaper than what I was cooking, and it's more filling, and HEAPS healthier. They're all yummy as recipes too. they sound nasty, as I'm a REALLY picky eater, but I've enjoyed every single one I've cooked so far. I'll add my favorite in this post just to kick it off, try before you think it's yuck, because it's good!

Corn Quiche

2cups Flour ½cup butter
3 eggs 200ml Cream
1 tin corn 1tsp Oregano
Pinch of salt

~ Preheat oven to 150 degrease Celsius
~ Cut butter into small pieces and place in bowl with flour. Rub together until mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
~ Add enough water to form a stiff dough (approx. ¼ cup)
~ Roll out dough until it's big enough to cover pie dish
~ Grease pie dish, put dough in, trim off excess. Bake for 10 minutes to seal pastry.
~ Drain corn well. Mix eggs, cream, oregano and salt together, add drained corn and pour mixture into pie case
~ Bake for 40 minutes or until cooked.

EDIT: All my recipes are vegetarian, but most can be modified for you meat lovers like me!!

Sounds yummy! Although if I made it, I'd probably try switching it to Smart Balance margarine instead of butter and try to find some kind of cream substitute. I wonder how it would taste with nonfat milk, or maybe with soymilk...

I'll have to go through my recipes tomorrow and post some good ones! Right now, my favorite thing to cook is baked fish and sweet potatoes. Just preheat the oven to 350, and place washed whole sweet potatoes on a foil covered baking sheet (makes cleanup much easier!). I usually cook 4 at at a time and stick the extras in the fridge - they keep a few days and are great cold, too!

Then, on another baking sheet, I lay down some foil and place the fish fillets on it (sometimes I'll lightly brush the foil with olive oil). Season the fish - I use a little salt and pepper, garlic powder, and dill. Then put another piece of foil over the top, and roll the edges up to make a parcel. And then just stick it in the oven with the potatoes - the potatoes take between 40-60 minutes, depending on size - they're done when you can insert a fork easily and feels soft. The fish will take about 20-25 mintes, depending on the thickness of the fillets.

So easy, so good, hardly any ingredients or prep, and no added fat! Yum!!

Sounds good - unfortunately I haven't been able to stomach fresh fish since my first pregnancy, otherwise I'd totally try it!

And I think that recipe would work fine with soy milk etc, if you maybe added a bit of cornflour to it to thicken it up - it's the consistency you need not the flavor in this case, so i think it's work out fine. it's amazing though, that recipe SOUNDS fattening, but as I said, I've been on this diet not quite two weeks now and I've already lost enough weight to fit into pre pregnancy clothes!

You can do the oven packet cooking with chicken, too! In that case, I use rosemary instead of dill and it usually needs to cook a little longer - about 25-30 minutes. The chicken stays really juicy!

That's a good idea about the cornstarch! I'll have to give that a try - sounds like something my boyfried would like, too! ^_^

x_x bah been doing well (ish, well better) but totally broke this morning and had a maple bar from the cooking class that goes to the same building as me. ;_; it was yummy thou.
Anyone know any good juice/teas that aren't terrible for you? I'm sorta bad and dislike plain ol water :/; I do drink it just not always my first choice.
and what about vitamin water? I can read labels it just doesn't mean a whole lot to me....lol

Mmmmm, maple bars. I'm sure it's tough to have yummy scents from a cooking class near by! I'm doing better, too, but I did have some ritz crackers and cream cheese last night, which I know wasn't the best snackie choice. Oh well...just gotta make a better choice next time! ^_^

The only problem with vitamin water is that it's sweetened - not nearly as much as pop or gatorade, but it's still extra sugar.

If you're not opposed to a little artificial sweetener, you could try Crystal Light. Personally, I'm against aspartame, which is in most of their products. But the pre-mixed bottles (comes in big bottles and single serving bottles) use Splenda instead, which isn't as bad as aspartame and tastes better, too!

Another option is fruit flavored sparkling water. There's a number of different kinds that are only lightly flavored with just a little juice, so there's no sugar or calories. I like a brand called Crystal Geyser - it comes in lemon and lime flavor.

You could also make your own plain iced tea to carry with you in a water bottle. I think Lipton has tea bags specially made for cold brewing, so you could make up a big batch and keep it in the fridge. Or if you want herbal iced tea without caffeine you can brew it warm and then chill it. Herbal teas with fruity flavors in them make great iced teas, as does Ginger Peach! Yum!

I forgot about that cold brew tea, I just never have enough time to brew tea and all that jazz, get the ice and let it settle long enough so it doesn't turn into complete watered down icky tea :(
I'll get some next pay day and give it a shot. :) I'm also very terrible at carrying around big bottles/things that I couldn't throw away if I needed too :< my environmentally unfriendly side.

I'm not a big fan of fake sugar, one of my over all goals is to cut out as much high fructose corn syrup (sp? XD) out of my diet as possible.

I haven't had any in ages, but as I recall the cold brew tea is very tasty! And I think it may come in single serving tea bags...

I'm trying to watch the corn syrup, too - and it's in everything! I try to shop in natural food stores when I can, but it can be a little spendy. If you live anywhere around a Trader Joe's, I would recommend shopping there - it's all natural and amazingly cheap! I think they may only be on the west coast, though...

I've always wanted to try soymilk and baked fish! X]] I love salmon and most other fish. Unfortunately, I'm not the one who buys the groceries, and my parents are deathly scared of me using kitchen appliances. [Well I'm scared of the oven, stove, and knives. XD] So I really can't wait to go to college and make my own meals. ^^ Right now I'm just focusing on exercising more since I don't know what to do about the food. I eat at hope 90% of the time, so chances are that I'm not eating THAT much. :S

Woot! :] A realistic goal! ^w^ I think it would be better to not omit red meat, just lower it. XD Usually, when people say no something at all, they're more likely to go and eat it, whereas if you let yourself a little...well it all depends on the person actually. You're a very strong person. :] And yeah, I find the 30minutes a day thing kind of hard... XD I don't really count my school's P.E as exercise roflmao. XD [Wait, didn't I say that before? o.o]

[What's a maple bar? XD I feel left out ;-;]
I would guess that fresh home-juiced juice would be best? XD I don't see what's so wrong with teas. o.o
[Checks lipton box] Oh woah, 55 calories. XD Not much, but not something I'd expect from tea. o.o

Do you drink your water cold? XD I like it that way, and it makes me drink more, but my mom says that it's bad for me [for the throat]. :S

I have been trying to motivate myself to eat right and to exercise more. I am lousy at self motivation. I like the looks of this thread though!

I weight roughly 180 and I am hoping to drop 60 pounds and get down to 120 which is normal for my height (5'4). I think it's normal anyway. I am in a dance class that I take once a week and sometimes I am motivated to exercise but I have poor eating habits.

Actually snacking is good for you.

You have to cut down on the proportions of your meals, though.

Then snacking is good for you.

Three small meals, and two snacks in between. :3

@MidnightRun - soymilk is really good! And it comes in flavors, which is nice -my b/f likes the vanilla soymilk on his cereal.

As for the red meat...the only red meat I really crave right now is hamburger, which I really should give up at least for a few weeks. Just to kinda cleanse my system. I totally agree with you about not totally restricting foods - that's the fast track to a craving binge! But if I want to kick start my weight loss I need to be a little more strict with myself than I'd be if I were at a healthier weight.

I'm trying to get the 30 minutes inby breaking it up into smaller sections - three 10 minute sessions on the mini trampoline doesn't seem nearly as tough as trying to get to gym after class!

@Freakishly Human - I'm about your height, and my goal is to get down to around 145. I could try to go lower, but I just don't think I'm genetically built for that, unless I ate nothing but lettuce and exercised 6 hours a day! *lol* I come from a fairly stocky family, plus I'm 30, and bodies and metabolism have a tendency to change when you leave your 20s. ^_^;;; I'll still have a ways to go to get the 145 goal after I lose that first 25, but it's not insurmountable, and breaking it up into smaller goals doesn't make it seem so daunting.

Junk food is my weakess, too! I've just made sure not to even let in the house. If there aren't any candies or cookies or crackers sitting on the counter, I won't be tempted to grab one as I walk by.

@tentenpuff - abolutely right! Snacking is very good! In fact, many dietitians recommend 4 or 5 small meals through the day instead of just 3 with no snacks. If you let your blood sugar get to low, it leads to cravings and bad moods, and it can slow down your metabolism. So it's best to have lots of healthy snacks around. If you're snacking on things like fruit or veggies (plain or with healthy dips, like hummus!), then you can pretty much snack all day and it's actually good for you!

@Naiyo - I know what you mean! I have a hard time finding bread that doesn't have added sugar or corn syrup. Who decided bread needs sugar? I don't mind a little honey or molasses in whole wheat bread, but I certainly don't need corn syrup!
