Well, my grandpa [Chinese] moved to Taiwan, my mom was there and lived there for all her childhood. Would you call her Taiwanese? Well, I would. XP
I was born in America, but I really consider myself Chinese. Sometimes I say "My dad's from the mainland and my mom's from Taiwan."

I don't consider them seperate as countries though. o.o My mom has never shown hate to China. She says their lifestyle is pretty different, maybe a reason why she got into a lot of fights with my dad. XD
When against other countries, she considers herself as part of whatever part China is. :S

She got pissed at the Rape of Nanking. XD

Seriously, aren't they all korean?

Noooo... I mean, we're all human, you know? But our country's borders define and divide us. North Korea is the last truly Communist country. The dictator of North Korea, Kim Jong Il, would never allow North and South Korea to rejoin. He rules over North Koreans like a god, and even claims to be one. Soldiers are posted at churches and can kill anyone who dares to say any god is greater than Kim Jong Il; people are forced to participate in the world's largest gymnastics competition, all in an effort to praise their great leader--not compete. People are starving to death in North Korea, while Kim Jong Il rests his fat laurels on his throne. Soldiers have fled the country and gone to South Korea after seeing that in South Korea, food actually comes in WRAPPED PACKAGES. It's that bad.

So no, North and South Koreans aren't the same. South Korea is very much like the rest of the modern world, while North Korea suffers. South Korea wants to reunite, but North Koreans are brainwashed into believing South Koreans eat their babies, alongside their American buddies. It's sickening. They don't have access to radio, TV, or computers that reach outside of their own country, so they have nothing but brainwashing to fill their poor, abused minds and bodies.

North Korea is not communist, they are under the rule of a dictator. Communism =/= dictatorship

Anyhoo, I think Taiwan has been practically separate ever since the Nationalists ran off to the island in the first place. China is fooling itself, keeping Taiwan on a leash under force.

What I don't understand is that I don't see any advantages for China to press the Taiwan issue - if they were to recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation and important trading partner, their economies will both benefit. Plus, then China wouldn't have to face so much criticism about Taiwan.

China and Taiwan, same country. Seriously, if being the same country means sharing the same unique language, I would say that Taiwan is still China's. I think Taiwan should just get together with China, but like Hong Kong, works as a special adminstrative region. Hong Kong still have it's freedom and it's own rule. And Macau too. You don't see war there. I just don't really understand some Taiwanese that REALLY wants to separate from China. No matter which way you look, Taiwan, from my point of view just seems like another of Chinese province, with its unique twist in language, but still Chinese. I do understand Taiwan Fukan language a bit, I'm from Hong Kong. Some words are so similar that there is not mistaking it to be Chinese. I have also live in Yunnan before. They spoke a different chinese, it's hard to listen and very werid, but it's still chinese. So no matter what the results is in the next taiwanese election's going to be, and whoever won and their actions towards this problem, I personally would still think that Taiwan is part of China. You can't be apart from your motherland for too long.

Taiwan is not just another province of China's. It's not a language issue. They are completely dissonant in political ideologies.

The Taiwanese went there for the express purpose of escaping communist rule.

(Yes I understand that China has a capitalistic market and is diverging from Marxist communism)

I'm just curious, though - if you think that Taiwan should be part of China, and the Taiwanese want to be separate.. shouldn't the Taiwanese have the say over how they want to live?

And, even though I'm ethnically Chinese, I don't see China as my motherland, nor do I feel that I owe any allegiance to it. I'll be perfectly okay with not living in China.

either way Taiwanese people originated from China. In other words people from China moved to Taiwan for w/e reason. Same with the Us/Canada, the white people there were from England, or France.

And before that, thousands of years ago, Chinese people descended from the cavemen in Africa. So does that make us all African? XD

That's what I don't get about that logic. If that's your belief, you're entitled to it - but if the Taiwanese believe otherwise, they should be allowed to take control of their own destiny without always having to fulfill some nebulous obligation to a motherland.

Hong Kong only has autonomous rule for another 40 years. It's entirely different to Taiwan, because Hong Kong was actually 'leased' to the British monarchy for 99 years, whereas Taiwan has not had 'official' foreign ownership/independence.

I wish you people would do some research before spouting off whatever you think is the truth.

Based on history, yes they're seperate. There was a huge battle..Sun Yat some guy and chairman mao. Presently, some tiwanese people refer themselves as taiwanese instead of chinese. Chinese people however, consider them the same thing. Again this is only my opinion.

This topic shows a stunning lack of knowledge about the history between China and Taiwan. Of course they're separate countries. I'm not even sure why this is even a question - it's like asking if North Korea and South Korea are separate countries.

It doesn't matter if we look like Africans or not - if you accept that humans evolved from monkeys, then by your logic, we'd all have to look exactly like monkeys in order to prove the theory right? Obviously not.

The anthropological evidence currently indicates that all humans descended from common ancestors from Africa. If you choose not to believe it, that's your personal belief, but scientific evidence says otherwise.

By the way, I'm of Chinese ancestry too, and I believe that who my ancestors are have nothing to do with how I choose to live my life. If what you say is true, then shouldn't Europe and Africa claim America as a province because many Americans have ancestors there? Your logic doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

This all started in the cold war era when United States choose to accept Tawain as its own country and we also are allied with them ....meaning if they ever go to war with china we have to take there side and get screwed in the long run....yeah anyways enough mindless chatter. I feel they really are two different countries only because they are recognized as such by other nations. However the complicated manner is that China does not see them as independent...

I don't think so, China has a habit of claiming other countries as their own. Tibet, for instance.

Tibet is part of China o.O"
it's even marked on the map.

@Mattybee
lack of knowledge?
tell us what you know that we don't?

southkorea and northkorea was together at some point in history, then the korea war happened, united states and all those other countries sided w/ SK and China sided with NK obviously cuz it was right beside China.

And it's really weird how the Taiwan has a CHINESE leader right now.

Ok seriously I know it is not only you, but China was NEVER communist. It is what it referred to as Maoism, which is an offshoot of Stalinism. This may be the politics major in me, but it is extremely annoying when people misuse political terms.

Would you be so kind as to point out where Taiwan has made official declarations of independence of any shape or form?

As I see it Taiwan is still part of China, until they officially become independent. I do not see this as changing anytime soon.

As for whether they want it or not is another matter. Ideally the rights of the people are supposed to override the rights of the state. Although such things do not often carry over into reality.

I guess they're considered separate.

I have friends who speak Mandarin but are from Taiwan .. And they call themselves Taiwanese. They take pride in Taiwan rather than China.

I guess they are separate ;P

Last I checked, Stalinism was a form of Communism.
Maoism is a form of Communism too.

Separate -- Including that whole government issue, Taiwan's and China's accents are very different. My mother is Taiwanese. We rented a room here, and the roommate is Chinese, somewhere up North, I think. Near Korea-ish.

But nevertheless, I can't understand the roommate at all a lot of the times because of her accent. &__& They had a lot of slurs to the end. *A*; However, in China, even they have different accents depending where they live and where they grew up.

I consider myself Chinese, simply because I can't speak Taiwanese. Taiwan people come from China, and build up from there.

I have no idea, but I would say that they're not seperate, why?
Writing: Basically the same
Art: The same
Government: The same
Religion: Again, basically the same

What makes them a civilization, they have almost the same proof of being a civilization. Buuut, Taiwan thinks that they have declared their independence and freedom from China. :/

I don't remember if I've already posted here or not.

I don't have a big opinion on this. If Taiwan wants to be its own country, why not let it? I mean, a lot of people already consider them to be different countries and the Taiwanese identify differently from the Chinese. All that's left is making it official.

@Flying Wings-- Japan and China are similar in writing and art, should we merge them too?
Just because a country has a similar heritage doesn't mean they are the same.
If you look between Canada and America you will find a shitload of similarities, but I certainly don't want to become part of Canada. O_O;;
