Welcome to WLHE. I have a lot of hopes for this hangout, and hope it turns out to be advantageous to not only myself, but others as well.

The main point of this thread is to find a support group made up of others going through the all to familiar affair of dieting and/or weight loss.

This thread is open to anyone. Also this is an open-minded group, so any diet method is also welcomed.

· To improve self-esteem.
· Allow a place for people to mark their progress and be congratulated by others.
· Offer a place were people can be open and offer personal experiences in the hopes of helping others.
· Help those who need it with self-improvement.

Testimonials

I thought it might be nice to hear some self-testaments from people. It is not required to submit a testament in order to participate in the thread. However, I do think it’s nice to sometimes know the background of people who are in your support group. To know how they’ve previously dieted, what their goals are, why they are currently doing the diet that they are, etc.

If you would like your testimonial added, simply PM what you would like it to read.

I will admit that I have a huge sweet tooth. My blood sugar also drops overnight, so the first thing I crave in the morning is something sweet. It’s rather annoying actually.

In the past I’ve tried several different diets. From low fat, to counting calories, to Weight Watchers and Atkins, to the veggie soup diet. So basically I’ve “been there, done that”.

I am currently in the process of redoing my diet. The closest thing I could do to describe it would be to say that it is a combination of the South Beach Diet and counting calories. Mostly I am going to be counting calories while trying to eat lower fats and healthy carbohydrates.

I know I can lose weight because I have before. I lost around eighty pounds my senior year of high school, just by eating healthily (not so much watching what I ate as just eating good things) and exercising regularly. I kept that weight off for the better part of two years. Unfortunately, I then hurt my knee. I had already gained a little bit of weight, and this was an excuse for me to become completely sedentary. I have gained about 120 pounds from the point I was at just after high school.

My current diet plan is simple: watch my calorie count and try to eat better foods. I am taking an individual fitness course at my university, which has me in the gym two days a week. I need to excercise three more days a week to meet my goal. My current goal is to go down one dress size, from a 24 to a 22. We'll see where I go from there.

I'm just barely 100 pounds, and I eat nothing but junk food. I don't starve myself, I'm not a anorexic or bulimic or have an eating disorder at all. . .

My problem is simply that I don't eat healthily at all. My diet normally consists of no real breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but more like snacking on Goldfish, Cheez-its, KitKats, and other candy and junk stuff all day long. It's taken its toll on me, and I'm just not so sure how to eat right. I've tried small eating right plans, but they've only lasted a week or so. . . I'm just unmotivated and need people to keep me in line. Drinks are a problem, too. I love milk and water, but I'd most always want to have a soda -- mainly Dr. Pepper or Coca-Cola. These sugary drinks just appeal to me. If I'm not eating them around the clock, I start to feel faint and nauseated, and therefore get sick. Okay, so yeah, I NEED HELP.

Most food info lies though, you have to multiply the fat grams by 9 and divide the calories by the number to get the real info.

Anyway I just can't seem to get myself to exercise regular. I'll do alright for a couple days, then get too busy or tired to continue, and it'll be a month before I get any real exercise.

At this time one year ago, I was a size 12. Now I'm a size 16, and I've never been this big before. I'm 17 and I've been a 10 or 12 since I was 10 years old. Now...I have to wear my mother's old jeans.

Food Journals

An important part of dieting is keeping a daily journal of what you eat during the day. By keeping a food journal you can see exactly what your diet is consisting of, and if need be, make changes.
There will actually be three types of journals in this thread you can choose to participate in. All you need to do is make a post for each journal you want to make, and then PM the page it is on to me. I will then put the link to it on this post. After that please continue to use that same journal post. You are more than welcome to also post what you ate and ask for suggestions or share recipes, etc.

Exercise Journals

Keep track of how long you exercise. Or maybe how many laps you do in the pool, miles you run, push ups you do in a row. However you exercise, keep a log. You might even be able to better your performance.

Diet Personals

Even though everyone here acts as one big support group, sometimes it's nice to find one or more people who share the same type of diet as you, live in your area/time zone, or maybe a work out buddy if they live close to you.

Either way, this is the place to look. If you would like to place a "ad" in the post, simply PM me what type of person you're looking for. ^_^

Monthly Challenge

Every month a new challenge will be up. It might be anything from exercising for a certain time each day, writing in your food journal for a whole month strait, etc. Obviously I am going to need new ideas for challenges, so if you have an idea I would love to hear about them. <33

--------------------------------------------------------

Current Challenge -- March

Pretty much every diet you choose to follow recommends drinking water. It was once believed that eight 8oz glasses of water was the daily amount needed for everyone each day. However it has now been stated that the amount of water a person needs is based off of their weight. However, in most cases, most people still need to drink 64 oz. per day. So the challenge for March is to drink at least 64 oz of water each day.

Make sure to keep track of your water in take in your food journal! : )

*huggles Chai* You know I'm happy to be here. I really need to work on this. :D

Edit: This is some helpful advice my Individual Fitness instructor gave about eating on the go:

Quote:
DIET
When we are busy, it’s easy to just give up trying to eat healthy, because most grab-and-go food is not very healthy. Make sure you eat breakfast every day, even if it’s just a piece of fruit on the way to class or a meal replacement shake (such as SlimFast). This will help you jump-start your metabolism and hopefully help prevent over-eating later in the day. If you are hitting the vending machine between classes, you are not given many healthy choices. To improve your diet, all you need is a little planning. Pack a lunch every day, so you know exactly what you are eating. Go to the grocery store on the weekend, and stock up for the week. Buy fruit and veggies that are easy to carry in your backpack for snacking. Buy bread (whole grain or whole wheat—look for stone ground flour or whole wheat flour as the first ingredient, not enriched flour!) and lean meats or peanut butter for sandwiches. You want to make sure you include protein and fiber in your diet to help you stay full (and the fiber will keep your digestive system healthy!). Make your dinner for the week on Sunday or any other day you have free, and just store it so when you get home for the day and are starving, you can just heat it up instead of snacking on unhealthy foods while you make something. You can add a significant amount of calories to your diet by snacking while making dinner. Another thing that you should attempt to do is cut out soda. It is not good for you in any way, and just ends up being empty calories. Drink water, a lot of water! Your body needs water, and most people do not get enough. I know a number of people who lost a significant amount of weight just from cutting out soda. Carry a water bottle with you where ever you go.

Hello! ^_^

This seems to be a popular topic lately! I was thinking of starting one like this a couple weeks ago (kinda glad I didn't, because I think I'm just to busy right now to be a proper thread hostess!), and I'm already a member in another hangout kind of like this here. But I don't see any reason why the two can't coexist...in fact, I'd like to be a member of both! ^_^

My goal at the moment is to lose 25 pounds by my friends' wedding at the end of May. I think it's pretty doable, if I get on it soon! The last couple days haven't been that great, though...^_^;;; I like the idea of the monthly challenges and journals, though - I think this could really help me!

Ryuumi: Hello and welcome! Your weight loss goal is definitely doable! It's perfectly healthy to lose about 1-2 lbs a week, which would just get you there by may. Good luck!

Thank you! I'm going to need all the luck and hard work I can manage...I'm a stress eater, and school right now is very stressful! I'm in the second year of a graphic design degree, and that means I have to submit a portfolio for review to see if I'll be allowed to continue in the program. So much pressure! And when I'm that stressed out, I don't want to cook for myself or worry about what I'm eating...I just want to grab burgers or pizza or some other take out food. And that's gotten me into quite a weight predicament. I had gained quite a bit of weight a few years ago, but I had managed to work over half of it off...then I started school again, and it's all coming back with the bad food habits.

So I'm going to try following a natural, healthy, balanced eating plan, mostly based on Dr. Gillian McKeith's books and program. Bascially, it's a lot of fruits and vegetables, whole grains instead of anything white or processed, nuts seeds and beans for good fats, and soy and fish (and occassionally turkey) for protien. It's the kind of plan where everything is healthy and has a nutritional value, so counting calories isn't as important as making sure I get a good variety of these foods...and just be a little careful with the nuts (since they are a little higher in calories) - everything else I can eat enough to feel satisfied, without having to weigh and measure and count. I do write down what I eat, but I've found the calorie counting makes me kinda diet crazy, and I end up trying to eat less and less calories each day, like it's some kind of challenge. *lol* So I'm trying to set myself up to focus on the nutrition instead of the calorie content.

And then I'll have to work in exercise somehow...^_^;;; I do have a mini trampoline, so I guess it's time to clear a space in the living room and roll it out! ^_^

Oh my, sorry for the wall o' text....I just get to jabbering and next thing ya know...*lol* ^_^;;;;;

@Ryu: Congrats on the weight loss already. : ) I had to drop from college because of social anxiety problems, but I was doing graphic design as well. And it is stressful! I would find that I did the same, to tired to cook after working on stuff or coming home from school. I took to buying bags of chips and other "handy" foods and just make a meal off of them.

I'm trying to train myself to go for fruit instead of that at least. Obviously making well balanced meals before hand will cut down the time for cooking...but I have been known to be very lazy and not want to cook at all. =0 Salads are also good. Just sorta throw everything on and go. xD

Oooh, a mini trampoline is good. You can come up with fun exercises with that. : )

And don't worry about the "wall of text". xD Doesn't bother me at all. : )

@joieD- Those tips you posted are very helpful for busy people, too! Now that I have a crockpot, I'm thinking of cooking a big batch of healthy soup at the beginning of the week and having that for dinner every night. I'm just not sure if I can eat the same thing every evening. We'll see!

I'm planning on getting started in earnest on Monday...that also gives the thread a couple days to warm up and settle in, and then I'll start posting a journal here. ^_^

@Chai - I've got so many good tips for healthy snacking now - I just need to implement them! Fruit is definitely a good one, especially for those of us with raging sweet tooths! Have you tried baked sweet potatoes? They're really good and very filling!

I'm afraid I'm heading downt the same road with my degree at the moment - I have suffered from anxiety in the past as well, but I've been working really hard to conquer it. In some ways, I'm miles better than I've ever been, but this quarter's stress is bringing back some old habits. I'm lucky to have a pretty good support system, but it's still difficult, and it's hard for people to understand who haven't been through it.

BTW, I just checked out your DA site...your chibis are sooooo adorable!!!! ^_____^
